I have read all of Blair’s books, most of them multiple times while waiting for the next to come out. This isn’t her usual style, but, as usual, there was no disappointment. This set of stories, all set at the Canterbury Golf Club, are fun set of mysteries. Beatrice, the ex-Kindergarten teacher and the Lady Captain seems to always end up in the middle of things, along with her side-kick Trudi. They sleuth their way through all of the pieces of evidence to try and solve the cases. Not Blair’s usual genre, but awesome just the same!
This set has a short story, followed by two full-length mysteries.
I loved this book and could not put it down. I was laughing with some of the antics but also trying to figure out the mysteries. These books pull you in and make you think about what really goes on behind closed doors.
Cozy Golf Club Intrigue!
This box set of cozy mysteries is tons of fun! There are two full-length novels and one novella included in this set, and all three books have the same cast of characters and setting – the Canterbury Golf Club and our heroine/sleuth, Beatrice Yates – the Lady Captain for the Club.
Theft, embezzlement, and murder – oh my! Lady Captain Bee is highly invested in the success of the Canterbury Golf Club. A recent widow, the Club is where she feels closest to her late husband. New competition for members in the form of a new Club in a neighboring town is already causing worry, and on top of that Bee is stumbling across dead bodies and bad math hiding all kinds of nefarious schemes, it’s up to Bee and her cohorts to save her beloved Club – even if it means putting herself in harm’s way (and under the microscope) in the process.
I’m a fan of Blair Babylon’s writing style and imagination no matter what the genre, although I do enjoy a good mystery. I’ve found her to be a first-rate storyteller across a multitude of series. Her books are well planned out, meticulously detailed, and superbly executed. Each character is so well projected, I can see d hear them in my mind as I’m reading. I found myself sleuthing along with Bee and Trudi throughout the books, trying to uncover the plots and save Canterbury before something else went wrong! I’d recommend this box set for mystery fans and Blair fans alike.
I voluntarily received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. While theses fun cozy mysteries are different from what we normally see from Blair, I do enjoy a good mystery and these were no exception. In fact, I’ve read more than a dozen of Blair’s books across three genres now, and not once have I been disappointed!
Three fabulous who-dun-its and all fun to read.
First, we have a mystery to solve at the Canterbury Golf Club.
Then we are off to the Country Club. And last but not least we find ourselves at the Devil’s Ball.
Lady Bea, and her friends bring us a ton of laughter trying to find culprits and enjoying themselves too much in each story. Grab your copy and start snooping.
The Devil Ball Mysteries box set is my first cozy mystery and I am fan, at least by this author.
The Mystery of the Missing Crystal Golf Ball introduces Bee,a retired kindergarten teacher, who is Lady Captain at her Golf club. We also meet her best friend Trudi, life of the party Uncle Arnie, and a variety of other characters. Bee has been a widow for five years and is still adjusting. Her introduction into sleuthing is to discreetly find out who stole a crystal golf ball that belonged to a golf legend All while increasing membership to the club to prevent it from closing down.
A Murder at the Country Club and A Murder at the Devil’s Ball up the stakes as Bee and her crew solve murders without being directly accused or arrested or possibly becoming a victim themselves. Things got a little hairy for Bee, but this teacher has experience with managing a crowd of five year olds so I think she can handle anything. I loved how the different characters had their own language and how it was tailored to them. With other authors I don’t always get a different personality coming through, but with Blair Babylon every voice is unique. One of my favorite things is that I can picture everything as if I were watching a movie. This author is so good with descriptions! Another thing I loved is the humor and friendship between Bee and Trudi. This is a really great box set with great writing and very interesting whodunit plots.
An entertaining set of mysteries to cozy up too! Great easy and fun read as Beatrice “Bee” Yates solves mysteries and murders around the Canterbury Golf Club. Beatrice “Bee” Yates, a retired kindergarten teacher and her best friend Trudi, a science professor seemingly get involved in solving the mysteries that pop up while they’re trying to save their country club. All while trying to keep themselves off the suspect list.
The Mystery of the Missing Crystal Golf Ball. – A short story to set the scene at the club, Bee Yates is in top recruiting form as she hosts a lunch where a priceless golf memorabilia disappears.
A Murder at the Country Club – finds Bee looking into who killed the Club check writer during a Glo-ball tournament and the reporter as well as secrets and gossip of the club are revealed. While trying to keep herself off the suspect list.
A Murder at the Devil’s Ball. – Picks up at another event, a Halloween party where it seems like someone has accidentally fallen down a stairwell. And all the potential suspects are stuck in the club house due to a sudden N’oreaster.
This set finds Bee trying to solve three different mysteries among a whole crazy cast of characters, from thieving committee members to a schmoozing Uncle Arnie chatting up the widows and an eager Lady golf pro in with the crowd make each who-dun-it exciting through to the end.
I received an ARC for a voluntary and honest review.
This Boxed Set has three engaging Cozy Mysteries set in the hotbed of intrigue, vice and sin that is the suburban Canterbury Golf and Country Club. I really liked Heroine Bea who is still struggling with widowhood five years after her husband’s death, so she throws herself into her role as Lady Captain at the Golf Club. Favourite parts of the stories come from a demonstration how Bea’s experience as a Kindergarten Teacher have given her the people skills to deal with the tantrums and tribulations of the Golf Set:
“…as a retired kindergarten teacher, I’d been practicing the essential job skills for decades: herding tantrum-prone nose-pickers, breaking up slap-fights before anybody started crying, and producing color-coded organizational charts…”
I also loved her best friend Trudi who brings a geeky and zany quirkiness to their murder investigations. Looking forward to more stories in this series as there are still lots of characters for future investigations and nibbles of potential romances if Bea finds she is ready to jump back into the ‘Dating Pool’.
I may not be a golfer, but it was fun to be a part of Mrs. Bee’s “foursome” as she solved these mysteries! Beatrice, the Lady Captain of the Canterbury Golf Club, and her best friend , Trudi, a scientist, look into these three cases together. The characters are appealing and the dialogue witty. If you are a fan of the cozy mystery then these stories are a “hole in one”.
This is a set of one short story and two books all happening at the Canterbury Golf Club. All are fun, enjoyable who done its.
The Mystery of The Missing Crystal Golf Ball
A seriously short, fun who-done-it. I knew how it was done, just wasn’t sure who until close to the end. Enjoyed this easy to read short. Go for it!
Murder At The Counry Club
A lot of golf related mystery and drama in this light hearted story. I know nothing about the game of golf, so much of the terminology was lost on me. I knew who the bad guy was from the beginning and enjoyed the game of pinning the crime on the correct individual(s). Enjoy this one.
A Murder At The Devil’s Ball
Another fun who done it, with our favorite retired school teacher and her mad professor side kick. Lots of sleuthing, golf terms and fun costumes in this one. It all works out in the end, with a fun time getting there. A good clean mystery with a twist of murder.
Amusing ‘Who Done It’ Box Set All Set Within An Interesting Backdrop!!
The Devil Ball Mysteries Box Set
This box set contains a short story & 2 full length stories. One is about a theft & 2 are about murders. They are all set at the Canterbury Golf Club which is currently struggling financially because a newer Club is undercutting their membership fees! Beatrice, Bee, is the Lady’s Captain. She’s a retired Kindergarten Teacher, she was widowed suddenly 5 years before & secretly she’s still mourning her loss much more than most people realise. Her bestfriend is Trudi, she’s a retired Neuroscience College Professor. These two ladies set out to help their local police department solve the crimes as they occur, whether they want their help or not!!
This was a complete departure from anything else I’ve read before. The stories, their pace, characterisation & content all reminded me of the old tv show ‘Murder She Wrote’! I loved the show 20 odd years ago but it’s not really my cup of tea anymore, I think I feel the same way about Cosy Mysteries as a genre too! But nostalgia does grip at me times so who know?!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about more realistic people that weren’t perfect, 20 years old & didn’t have any issues with aching joints or sore knees when bending! I really appreciated that differing ages & marital statuses were included. I particularly enjoyed the much older & flirtier generation, they were hilarious!! I’d like to see this tackled in more genres too!! I’m really glad I’ve tried this genre because now I know what it’s about. I wouldn’t rule out reading them in the future, but I think it would be on rare occasions rather than as a regular addition to my reading lists.
