4 stars . Wish I’d read more of Baker City Brides before reading this.
This is a well written story, about a woman and two children – her husband rode off and has not come back. Winter is coming on and a man who has been turned down hears her crying in the snow and goes to find out if he can help. Even though she is married, he wants to help her and the children. I enjoyed how Shanna Hatfield wove her story and characters – the two kids were so precious.
A wonderfully written romance of lost love and second love. Also great connection to previous characters in previous series.
I highly recommend this book.
Really enjoyed this book. Read in one sitting
It’s November 1892 and Graydon Gaffney, foreman of the Lucky Larkspur Mine, is trying to make his way home through a snowstorm after a trip to Baker City. Taking a shortcut through the mountain, he comes across a woman sitting in the snow crying. Helping her up and back to her cabin, she invites Grady in to wait out the storm.
Giavanna DeVille’s husband left eight months ago looking for a job and never returned. Running out of food and supplies and the cabin needing repair, Gia finally gives in to her despair, going outside after putting her two small children to bed so they cannot hear her. She certainly never expected a handsome stranger to appear and console her.
Grady is instantly smitten with the beautiful woman and her children. Seeing their needs and wanting to help, he keeps showing up with food and working around the place despite Gia’s insistence that he not do so. His sneakiness and her stubbornness as well as his funny little sayings make for a lighthearted story.
Where the first book in the Gifts Of Christmas series used a devastating loss to inspire Nora to bring Christmas to others, this second one shows people wanting to help Gia through a time of hardship during the holiday season. I’m looking forward to seeing what the third bestows in these heartwarming novels from Shanna Hatfield.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
I really enjoyed this story. This one takes place in a favorite place of mine, Baker City, OR.
A miner returning to a mine that Thane Jordan owns is caught in a blizzard as he is riding his horse up the mountain where the mine is. He thinks he hears the cry of some animal and wants to make it back in case wolves or other animals are around. He hears the sound again but realizes that the sound he hears is a woman crying. He is wondering what fool would let a woman out in this storm. He rides in the direction of the sound and finds a woman on the ground in the snow crying her heart out and goes to her thinking she is hurt. He asks if she is okay but she doesn’t hear him at first, so he gets off of his horse and goes to her to see if she is hurt and why is she alone out in this blizzard. First, she shocked to find a man standing there is frightened. He takes her back to her cabin and makes sure she is alright. He finds her alone with only two children who are sleeping. He is furious that some man would leave them alone in a cold cabin up on this mountain.
This is a story of hope at incredible odds, one that is sorrowful, as well as loving and hopeful all because of one man who does everything he can to make life better for this small family.
You will find there is also such love in store along with way, hope and faith that neither ever thought they would have again. It is a delightful story only like Shanna Hatfield can deliver and she does it well.
I love finding old friends and this wonderful town in a story that brings back characters you want to hear about again and again plus find out how they all pitch in to help a person in or three in need.
This is the second story in this series and I think it is my favorite so far. I highly encourage you to get this story and get a cup of hot cocoa, a blanket and sit in front of your fireplace if you have one and settle in to read this wonderful Christmas story.
