Excellent romantic suspense with lots of danger and sweet romance, set against a backdrop of the drug cartels and drug trafficking.
Carol Ericson’s story of amnesiac Jane Doe caught my interest from the first page. I was shocked by the courage and strength of this vulnerable woman. She fought to find her identity even if the truth wouldn’t be good. Was she involved with a notorious drug lord? Why did someone want her dead? I couldn’t believe what she endured. How difficult it must be not to know who you are. I was glad that she had someone protecting her. Rob Valdez is a Border Patrol agent. He’s one of the good guys. I loved how he supported Jane. She certainly needs someone on her side. As they fought to find the truth, a dangerous enemy is working to silence Jane. I was on the edge of my seat. I wanted her to reclaim her identity. The chemistry between Jane and Rob is powerful but I was worried that any chance they had for happiness would be destroyed by El Gringo Viejo and his henchmen. I really enjoyed the story’s connection to April. Would she finally know the truth. Carol Ericson did a wonderful job writing this romantic and suspenseful story.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
Author Carol Ericson continues her exciting “Holding the Line” series with Book Three, “Unraveling Jane Doe”. The heat continues to rise in the little border town of Paradiso, Arizona–drug cartels are becoming bolder and more deadly in plying their heinous trade. When border patrol agent Rob Valdez spots the smoking wreckage of a burned-out car, he is startled to find a confused and injured knife-wielding woman who refuses medical aid. Impulsive by nature, Rob’s protective instincts kick in, and he takes “Jane Doe”–who has memory loss from her injuries–to his own home to offer assistance. Rob and Jane, both shaken by their dramatic encounter, are wary of each other, and each of them tries to gauge how far they can trust one another. This story really kicks off when truths began to be revealed, and the depth of the danger of the situation becomes clear. Jane’s real identity is Libby James, an art dealer from Mexico who is being hunted by El Gringo Viejo, a villainous drug supplier. As Rob and Libby work to find all the clues to the perilous puzzle, the friendship and attraction between continues to grow stronger. If they both survive the jeopardy they face, will their relationship bloom into something with a bright and loving future? Congratulations to author Carol Ericson–“Unraveling Jane Doe” is her 50th book for Harlequin. “Holding the Line” is a terrific romantic suspense series from a skilled storyteller.

By now I have been waiting for this one and was glad to see it. Having enjoyed the first two getting into another for a series is like revisiting friends once again. Rob has a big puzzle on his hands of a human nature. Not knowing whom you are I imagine is probably one of the scariest things. Not always liking what is found can happen but also dangerous things can come out. That can be why in some cases that something happened that left the holes. It usually means others do not want you to remember either which is what happens in this. Part of the anticipation is finding the name behind Jane and the real woman. Rob and Jane also have chemistry that fuels them too to find those answers. Take this one in a page at a time that at times can turn real fast.
I’m really enjoying this series although each book can be read without reading the others. Since I have lived in Arizona, near the border of Mexico, this series is very interesting to me. I am familiar with the challenges that are present in this area and kudos to those border agents! Also, the premise of amnesia fascinates me. I can’t imagine a moment where you don’t know who you are! Your memory is a blank slate. It must be terrifying! This is how the book begins – “Jane” is in a car accident, being chased by men she doesn’t know and after the accident, they set her car on fire to make sure she is dead! However, she has just escaped before they do but she has no memory of who she is or why these men are chasing her. Thankfully, Border Agent Rob Valdez is the one who finds her later and takes care of her. Come to find out, she is somewhat embroiled in a case he is working but that comes out after various things happen! A lot of action and things going on. I enjoyed Rob and “Jane” as they try to figure out who is is and who is after her. A thrilling story!
I enjoyed this well-written, suspenseful romance. It caught my attention right away and held it, so that I didn’t want to put the book down. “Jane Doe” and Rob Valdez had a strong attraction to each other and they were also dedicated to figuring out who Jane really was and keeping her safe in the process. This was an entertaining book and I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Being a border patrol agent in the town of Paradiso means sometimes coming into contact with people who are connected to the drug trade. So when agent Rob Valdez finds a woman at the scene of a car accident taking her to his home without calling in the accident may not be the smartest thing he could do.
With no memory of who she is, Jane Doe does know she is running from someone who wants her dead. Trusting Rob Valdez may not be the smartest thing she could do but she has no other options at the moment.
Rob’s main goal is to protect this woman, find out who she is, and why someone wants her dead.
As a story in the Holding the Line series, this book can be read as a stand-alone. The suspense builds at a steady pace as the facts start to be uncovered. Rob and Jane share an attraction that grows through the story but the main focus is on the suspense.
I enjoyed this book and will be looking for the next in this series.
4 1/2 STARS!
Fast paced, exciting and full of mystery! With book three in her Holding the Line series Carol Ericson continues to bring the heat in UNRAVELING JANE DOE. The reader is drawn into the intrigue of Jane’s story from the very first page and it doesn’t slow down throughout the book. The ending was a bit rushed for my liking, but I enjoyed their story and hope to see more of them in the series.
Jane is attention grabbing from the start. Her life is in danger and she remembers nothing … as danger closes in, she has to fight to survive.
Rob is easy going and easy to like. He’s willing to put his job on the line to help keep Jane safe without anyone knowing.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who enjoys intrigue mixed with danger and romance. The series is high energy and full of danger.
I really enjoy this series. I think because I lived on the border, both sides in Arizona and in Texas. Each book can be read as a stand alone. They are all pulled together by the cartel, one in particular.
You meet Rob in previous books and I interpreted him as a really young person, all have cocked, but when you read his pass you understand a little more of his interest in Border Patrol.
I like watching this play out, what happens when you have amnesia and what steps do you take if you are in hiding.
I loved seeing Luna and Reggie again. I want some of that tea! This was a well done mystery. So who else thinks the name of El Gringo is just one of many? If you want your mind on something else other than the pandemic, but don’t want something to intense, but still want to be entertained I recommend this series. Thank you for the arc! All thoughts an opinions are my own which I freely share
