CHAINED BY THE FIERCE HIGHLANDER:
What an exciting book. Feuds and Danger? Sieges and Death? Fear for live and limb? There is a long-standing feud between the McTavish clan and the Balfour Clan. A dispute over hidden gold that was to be shared by both clans and never was. The McTavish Laird’s son decided to lay siege to Balfour’s castle and take it over for himself against his father’s counsel. While the siege raged, Laird Balfour got his nineteen-year-old daughter Isla and his eighteen-month-old son Andrew ready to flee through the escape tunnels. He would stay with his men and fight. Balfour sent them to Arbroath where their uncle Broch lived. They would be safe there. Isla would not let her father down. She straightened her shoulders, packed lightly, clothes and food. She traveled by foot with Andrew strapped to her front or back depending on her comfort. Many days and nights passed. One morning they were almost discovered by six drunk bandits. Isla did some quick thinking to get them away from them after Andrew cried. Her trick worked but she was terrified to move. When she finally did and was back on the road, she heard the sound of many horses and fearing the bandits she tried to hide. But they were soldiers of Laird Magnus and were hunting down the bandits. One soldier introduced himself as the captain of Galbraith Castle. The captain informed her that on the Laird’s orders all strangers were to be apprehended as they could be spies. Isla now realized they were prisoners of Laird Magnus. Although his men had nothing but the highest praise for their kind and benevolent leader, this did not comfort Isla. After the soldiers found and tied up the bandits, they returned to Galbraith Castle. Isla was to meet the Laird and be interrogated. Upon arrival she and Andrew were separated. She was beyond worry. They all assured her that Andrew was in the best of hands. When Magnus and Isla first laid eyes on each other there was immediate attraction. However, Magnus had a dark past that kept him from ever getting close and trusting a lass again. Isla decided to hear him out. She told him that she was Lady Isla Balfour of the Auchterlinn estate in Aberdeen and that her father is Laird Glenn Balfour. Magnus had such a distrust that he was sure she was lying and was a spy. He told her what he thought and sentenced her to the dungeon. She hated him from that moment on. She was still separated from Andrew and she worried so. The guards were lewd and crude. Because she would not give into their notions, they rationed her food to almost nothing, did not give her clean water so she could wash and they would not light her fireplace to keep her warm. Mangus burst on the scene and was ashamed at the way his men treated Isla. He immediately removed her from the dungeon into a guest room. It wasn’t much but it was better than the dungeon. She was given food, bath and clothes and a maid to help her. Magnus posted a guard outside her room. She was then reunited with Andrew and she temporarily forgot all her troubles. He was happy and healthy, washed and clean. This was the beginning of the love / hate relationship Isla and Magnus had. The story definitely takes you on an adventure of vulnerability, honesty and a budding forgiving relationship. However, a mutual acquaintance of theirs was a wolf with sheep’s clothing. He instigated falsehoods and manipulation to get Isla to his side. He taunted her with the whereabouts of her father. She left without a word to anyone. When Magnus found out he gathered his men. Before he left, Annie, Isla’s friend found the note given to Isla detailing the meeting point. The men moved out. It was raining and storming. After a few hours Magnus had the men return to the castle but he continued on. He finally found her and just in time. The man was bound hand and foot and lead them to where Laird Balfour was. When they reached the broken-down cottage, Isla found her father emaciated but happy to see her. The kidnapper had told the Laird it was not safe to move him for the McTavish clan had taken over his castle, killed his men and were out hunting for him. None of that was true. Magnus would be sure the justice would be met out on this despicable man. They all returned to Galbraith Castle and Isla’s family was finally reunited. In the meantime, Magnus and Isla fell in love with each other but had yet to declare themselves. What a conundrum. A very exhilarating entertaining read. A page turner and I highly recommend it.
SEDUCED BY THE NOBLE HIGHLANDER:
A simple story of a long-time love between a noble and a handmaiden. Lewis wanted to marry Crissy for the longest time, but she knew their class divide would never be accepted. Lewis did not relent in his pursuit of Crissy. They both loved each other so. The story shows what a determined gentleman Lewis was as well as protective of Crissy. Crissy was a loving, kind, generous soul who treated everyone with respect and she knew her duties and never shirked them because of Lewis. When Lewis’s father David found out about the romance, he sent Crissy away. She left knowing it was only right that she was not born to be a lady. There is some drama to the story. Bryce Lewis’s older brother became a mental and legal problem his father had to deal with. Then while Crissy was traveling by foot, she was waylaid by an innocent looking sister and brother. They stole everything she had of worth and beat her and choked her and left her for dead. There is a smooth transition from page to page but without many twists nor surprises. It is a quick read, moderately paced. The ending made me very happy for all the characters involved.
PROTECTED BY THE VENGEFUL HIGHLANDER:
This is a great story of two very good, kind, generous and loving sisters, Nora and Elizabeth, who had a tyrannical brother, Laird Laurie McTavish, who cared for nothing except his next drink. Then we have two brothers Laird Lennox Colquhoun and Niall. The had a younger sister, Nessa who after two years of marriage died a mysterious death. The brothers were determined to get to the bottom of it. That meant being in the company of Nessa’s husband, another alcoholic, whore chasing despot Laird Callum McKinnon. Nessa was seventeen when she married him and he was more than twice her age. She was nineteen when she died. Callum was the one that brought Lennox, Niall, Laurie and Nora together. Nora was betrothed to Callum by her brother Laurie. When Lennox first cast his eyes upon Nora, he fell in love. Lennox suspected Callum had something to do with his sister’s death and was determined to make sure Nora did not end up with the same fate. As Lennox pursued Nora, she tried to resist him. In the end she could not and they began to secretly see each other and plot to get her away from Callum. But Lennox and Niall had not forgotten what brought them to Callum’s home, it was to find out what really happened to their sister. Niall overheard Callum and Laurie discussing a deal that Callum would bed both sisters and decide who to marry. Laurie was pleased as he would be given more money. Niall immediately told Lennox and Nora. It was time to get Nora away. Lennox and Niall came up with a plan. There was more danger for Niall if he was caught and unfortunately, he was by Callum. Callum whipped Niall’s back raw. But Niall never cried out nor answered any questions. Before all this transpired Nora and Elizabeth did as much charity work as they could among their father’s staff and tenant farmers. It garnered the attention of three other Lairds in the area, Laird Glenn Balfour, Laird Magnus Galbraith and Laird Lewis Crawford. They assisted the sisters with grain and food to pass out. When they heard of Nora’s betrothal to Callum they were appalled. They all knew what a despicable person he was. It was these Lairds that rescued Niall from Callum’s dungeon and rescued Lennox and Nora from being on the run. Now they had allies. Callum and Laurie had no idea how justice was ready to meet them. Meantime Lennox and Nora were to marry, Elizabeth had been rescued and was caring for Niall’s injuries. It was a surprise to all that Nora and Elizabeth had a younger brother Kyle who had been living in seclusion with monks for years and was now seventeen. Technically he would become the next Laird. When Kyle met his sisters, he did not remember them. However, he got to know that they were very kind and compassionate. When the future of the McTavish clan and estate were in question, Lennox and Niall offered their assistance. Also, by the by, Niall became interested in Elizabeth who thought no man would ever want her. She had been told all her life by her family that she was plain ugly. But it was not true. Niall told Elizabeth that beauty was more than skin deep. This story offers a lot of action, adventure and romance. After reading the epilogue and extended epilogue I felt a little disappointed. I really wanted to know how Kyle was faring and where Niall and Elizabeth ended up. Overall it is a very good entertaining story about Lennox and Nora and the people surrounding them. It was endearing to read of the compassion Nora and Elizabeth had for the tenants of their estate and staff when their father and brother Laurie did not care for them. It was great teamwork when the four competent efficient caring Lairds came to Nora and Elizabeth’s defense against their brother and Laird Callum. A satisfactory ending. Worth reading.
