Note: the series ends on a cliffhanger in Book 4. Ivy and Pearl Rowntree are daughters of the legendary Alice, now Alice Rowntree, president of The Forge. There are signs that the Queen of Hearts, thought to be dead for 18 years since her defeat, is back. Her Pinnacle clock is ticking again and the soldier Hearts roam the streets for the first time since the queen was believed to be dead. Ivy dreams of a vampire whose name is Raven. Continues in Heiress of Delusion.
After defeating the Red Queen, the Forge seems to thrive under Alice’s leadership. Ivy, who never knew the horrors of the old times, lives an easy life, accompanied by her best friend Chesh, the wannabe inventor. Only, she does not feel like she fits in, not really accepting the aesthetic laws and the focus of beauty and perfect appearance. With the recent development, though, her life seems about to change – there are reappearances of the metal Hearts, the Pinnacle started ticking again, and there are rumors about the white rabbit and vampires.
Yet another great introduction to a fairy tale spin off, this time Alice in Wonderland. The steampunk world is charming, and the conflicting position of the vampires adds the fantastic touch to the book. Chesh is an adorable character, with his obvious weakness for his closest friend, and Ivy seems to be not yet fully shaped when it comes to personality – I could not decide if I should see her as naive, oblivious, shallow, or simply inexperienced; maybe a bit of everything at this point. But her heart is true, and she is good down to her core, so I feel great things coming her way.
So much fun. Alice in Wonderland meets steampunk meets vampires! Ivy is Alice’s daughter. She is trying to help figure out what is going on around The Forge. Mystery and adventure is afoot.
I’ve been curious to see the mechanically minded Forge and their wonderful contraptions since it was alluded to in earlier books in the Kingdom of Fairytales. The Forge was a wonderful mashup of steampunk technology, flamboyant Wonderland style, and urban fantasy – including vampires. It is a kingdom where aesthetics are paramount, creating a veneer of beauty of over a reality that is not nearly so perfect.
Ivy has a mechanical affinity, able to sense if machines are as they should be, and a knack for fixing what is wrong. But what about when things are mysteriously right? Clocks that haven’t worked in 18 years suddenly keeping perfect time. And that is just the beginning of strange happenings happenings and mysteries that seem to be popping up all around her.
I loved all the nods to characters, events and settings from the original and the way they were cleverly twisted, even a riddle involving a Raven. Rich introduction to a politically complicated land. As this is book 1 of 4 it ends with a cliff hanger – can’t wait to see where it goes next.
If you liked Alice in wonderland, then you will love her daughter Ivy. Something is afoot and Ivy has to maneuver her way around all the strange happenings to figure out what’s going on.
Queen of clockwork is the first book in The Alice in Wonderland arc by J.A. Armitage and Zara Quentin.
Ivy, the daughter of Alice, lives in The Forge. The citizens there live in the shadows ot the dead Queen of Heart. Ivy is one of the city’s inspectors but her passion lies with pocket watches. One day she commissioned to fix an antique pocket watch that hasn’t worked for 18 years. Not helping with that, the town clock that haven’t work since the Quee’s death starts to strikes again and some of her soldiers will be seens in the streets sending fear to the citizens. If you includes the stranges dreams Ivy have, the stranger that she see and the fact that the blood bank don’t have enough stocks for the vampire who lives in the forge even tough there’s seems to have no problem there, something is definitely going on in town.
I can’t wait to read the next one in this series. I have received an arc of this book from the authors.
