I have never been disappointed in Wendy’s books or her story lines. Her research for places and how things were run during the time period she writes about is always so fascinating.
I received an ARC from the author but was not persuaded to leave a positive feedback.
Will she ever be able to trust him?
It was the blurb for The Countess Intrigue that first caught my eye. The idea of a girl forced to marry a man whom society has convicted by gossip of having murdered his first wife was interesting. While I can’t say that Wendy May Andrews’s, which I later found out is the second book in her Mayfair Mayhem series, novel was overly riveting, I can say that it was a pleasant diversion on a rainy day while I worked on my computer.
The story is a clean read with no real objectionable content and the seeming silliness of the heroine was slightly reminiscent of some of Jane Austen’s characters. I’m going to be honest, my favorite character was not one of the leads but rather the heroine’s maid, Pansy. That girl is smart, sassy, and has some real backbone!
I listened to this title as an audiobook and found the production to be pretty average. No serious glitches or anything. The narrator did a fairly good job, her accent was quite good, though I did sometimes wonder if some of her intonations were influencing my opinion of the heroine’s immaturity. All of that aside it was a cute story, light, frothy, and easy to listen to, but with a nice little dash of suspense.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Everyone knows Lord Justice Sinclair is guilty of murdering his wife, so why is he allowed entry into society? Lady Elizabeth Castleton determines not to have anything to do with him, but after being caught in a compromising situation, she finds herself betrothed to him. The truth must be discovered at any cost.
I especially enjoyed how true to life Elizabeth’s character was. She wants to know the facts and not listen to gossip, but the gossip does have an impact on how she views her new husband. She is not totally alone, relying on her maid to help her in her quest for the truth.
This is was well written and acceptable to any age reader. I would recommend this to any fan of clean Regency stories.
The Countess Intrigue is the second book in the Mayfair Mayhem series but can be read as a standalone. Lady Elizabeth is found in a compromising situation with Justice, the Earl of Heath. Even with the rumors of Justice killing his first wife, her parents insist Elizabeth marries Justice. Once an attempt of murder happens to Elizabeth, she starts too ask questions of his first wife’s death. After finally having an open conversation, Justice and Elizabeth join forces to solve the mystery. The book has plenty of twists, mystery, intrigue, romance and even some humor. It kept my attention to the last page. Will they learn to trust each other and solve the mystery? I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Caught up in an intrigue, not of her own making, Elizabeth Castleton makes her acquaintance with the Earl of Heath, Justice Sinclair, and then gets caught in a compromising situation with him by her over-eager mother. The fact that it is rumoured that Justice murdered his first wife doesn’t deter Lady Castleton one bit as her focus is solely on seeing Elizabeth married by the end of the season. However, Elizabeth is no shrinking violet and determines not only to take measures to keep herself safe but also to investigate the circumstances under which the previous Countess died. Nevertheless, the attraction between Justice and Elizabeth is strong and Justice’s disappointment that his new wife is suspicious of him runs deep and he does everything he can to quieten her nerves and win her over. However, when there is an attempt on Elizabeth’s life, Justice realises that it’s time to act and with his wife’s help, to run down the culprit. The story is engaging and holds the reader’s attention from the beginning to the end, as apart from the romance, there is also a certain amount of suspense. The story is well written and although it follows on from The Duke Conspiracy, it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a happy and successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Stepping out onto the terrace to catch a breath of air and fortify herself, Lady Elizabeth Castleton never expected to be engaged in conversation by Justine Sinclair, the Earl of Heath! “You ought not to be out here on your own my lady. There are a number of men of questionable character in attendence this evening,” he warned her. “His handsome face always made her blink.” Of course the rumors he had killed his wife were all about.
Afer a short conversation she returned inside and then he asked her to dance! The problem was she tried to maintain her proper pose but it was difficut being so close to him. Justine had no idea why he had asked her to dance but he thought her beautiful.
Wow, the first few pages pulled me right into this story and I could not wait to find out what would happen! When they are almost forced to marry due to appearing to be compromised with a hugh misunderstanding! Can you imagine the societal times of having to marry?
Suspense, mystery, intrigue and of course a determined Elizabeth to find out who killed his first wife. I warn you, once you start you will not be able to put it down until the last page is turned!! Cannot wait to read more by this author!
Lady Elizabeth is quite brave to marry Lord Sinclair with all the rumors about his involvement with his first wife’s death. However, Wendy May Andrews does not write about wimpy hand wringing heroines. Her heroines believe in taking action. Fortunately, Lord Sinclair can appreciate this personality trait. I have enjoyed both books so far in this trilogy and look forward to the final installment.
I received an advanced copy of this book. The opinions given are my own.
Imagine being a young woman and finding yourself in a position to be forced to marry a man everyone suspects killed his first wife. The turmoil Elizabeth feels with Justice is overwhelming but this young lady and her maid are fierce women. The will help find out the truth without Justice. He will be surprised at their tenaciousness. His wife is a force he will come to admire and work together to solve the mystery behind his first wife’s demise. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
