Thorvald Longsword can’t believe all he has to do is kidnap the daughter of his jarl’s enemy to get his land back. Easy. But when he finally snatches the princess up and tosses her over his shoulder, the beautiful spitfire makes him question his determination to get his land back at any cost. Alodie gladly agrees to impersonate the princess so the bloodthirsty Northmen will take her instead. … instead. While Alodie might be ready to die for her people, she wasn’t prepared for how her pulse races for the maddeningly noble captor whom she’d just as soon hate.
But what happens when Thorvald finds out she’s not who she says she is…

What a book full of tall, strong Viking hotness and young British strong will and heartedness!! Alodie and Thorvald, while meeting under less than optimal circumstances, were an amazing couple, one that I simply ADORED! Ms. Hahn is obviously well versed in researching and writing delightful historical romances. While this is the first book of hers that I have read to my knowledge, It will certainly not be the last. I loved her approach to writing as told in her foreword –
“…I am not a scholar, although perhaps I should have been. What I am, for better or worse, is a writer. My first loyalty is to the story….”
And quite the storyteller she is. I could easily visualize Alodie’s place in the Princess’ household including her attire, demeanor and hardworking behavior. I could see through my mind’s eye Thorvald and the other Demons in how they were dresses, carried themselves and spoke. I could especially almost feel the tangible electricity between Alodie and Thorvald from the time of their first meeting. Truly outstanding.
The only difficulty I had was making sense of what took place with the other men around the Jarl, especially in the great hall. At times it was a little unclear, but perhaps that was the author’s plan as it was usually during a melee or some such event. No matter. It was of small enough consequence that it didn’t disrupt my love of The Viking’s Captive. My favorite part was at the end where all I can tell you is that there is a happy ending.
So if you’re a lover of historical romance, swoon over big strong men with soft and wounded hearts and love a strong damsel in semi-distress, you will love The Viking’s Captive.

I received this book freely as requested from Net Galley and am voluntarily leaving my review. All opinions are my own.
Let me just say that this was not a new premise to me when it comes to the historical reads of this time frame and origin. Blackmail. Bribery. Kidnapping. Switching. Sacrifice. Excitement. Ingrid Hahn tells us right off that she was no scholar, but she did a fab job with bringing to life the men of the northern lands and the strong wills of the young ladies of the south main land. Alodie was willing to go far to protect her princess and her people. She was there all the way. Then she comes up against Thorvald. This was an entertaining read starting with the note from the author all the way to the final page of the story. I found strong, warm, spirited characters. I found a land that was beautiful and a story well told.
Ingrid Hahn had not been known to me prior to this read. She will know become a part of my historical romance reading rotation. Thank you.
4.5 / 5 stars rounded up. This book is adventurous, romantic, and definitely steamy at times! Whenever I picked up “The Viking’s Captive”, I felt like I traveled back to the Early Medieval Era, and could see everything happening before my eyes.
The characters felt very real, and also grew throughout the novel. Many of them had huge character arcs, and the relationships and interactions between various characters felt very authentic. There were quite a few twists and turns that I did not see coming AT ALL! My mouth definitely dropped a few times.
If you love historical fiction and / or historical romance, I definitely recommend this book. I could not wait to see chapter after chapter what happened next in the story.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for an ARC of this book, I really enjoyed it!
Like Viking tales of old, this story had many elements that kept me enthralled; adventure, romance, drama, heroism, tragedy, deceit and secrets. Well written in a way that takes you to the time period without getting too bogged down with technical language. I loved the inventive curse words. Even though something drastic happens to Sigurd, I’m hoping for his story next!
I received a copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
From the first page, the adventure began as the Vikings arrive. Alodie sees them on the sea and runs to warn everyone including her mistress, the princess.
Elodie begs the Princess to let her act in her place so that she will be safe. Dressing up and standing before the “demons”, the leader stepped out and said he had come for the Princess.
Thorvald Longsword loathed having to take her. But he would do as he was bid. It was his chance to do something for the Jarl and win his favor and he would free him. He had a secret that had kept him under the Jarls control. He didn;t want to kill the people if the princess would just come with him.
Alodie does go with him and the journey begins!
Prepare to be drawn into the life of the Norsemen and see how they lived and the lives of two unlikely people to be drawn together! Adventure, suspense, secrets, an attraction that cannot be denied will take you to the end and make you sigh as you turn the last page! Excellent!
The Viking’s Captive by Ingrid Hahn is the story of Alodie and Thorvald.
Thorvald was sent to kidnap the Princess and in returned he would be given back his land. So that is what he set out to do. Alodie was left by her father became a servant of the Princess. So when Thorvald came, Alodie took the Princess place. Thorvald of course doesn’t know this at first but he is definitely attracted to the spirited women. Alodie has her attraction too but with what she is hiding and of course her painful past she holds her feelings in as long as she could.
For me this was a page turner story. I am a big fan of Ms. Hahn’s writing so this was a joy to read.
Ooooh, this was such a great story and I enjoyed it from start to finish. This was my first time reading a book by this author and I was very impressed. I love Viking stories and this one did not disappoint.
All Thorvald wants is to get his land back and if he has to kidnap a princess for his Jarl to do so, so be it! Alodie, a servant for the princess, comes up with a plan which involves her pretending to be the princess. It all seems pretty cut and dry but neither of them expected to start having feelings for each other and Thorvald is pretty torn up about what he’s doing. Alodie is confused because she’s always believed the Norsemen to be “demons” and yet, Thorvald is so honorable and gentle with her. The whole story is well written and all the characters very believable.

This book had good and honorable main characters. Alodie and Thorvald were people that I found interesting. The world-building involved two different cultures and was done well too. Things in the story were well described. Several different secondary people added interest. However, I did have mixed feelings about the story. It had moments that I enjoyed and then it just seemed to settle to a point where not much was happening. Even though their were challenges that had to be overcome by both Alodie and Thorvald and a totally fungus like villain in play. It gave me a smile here and there and has a good outcome. I just wish I had liked it more. For me, it just felt like the story went on a bit too long. I guess that is the bottom line for me.

A well written book that I enjoyed but at times I found my interest wandering. I liked both Thorvald & Alodie but I didn’t love them & I found that whilst there was chemistry between them I didn’t really buy that they fell in love. Both of them were still too involved in their pasts & weren’t really moving forward. I was disappointed that one of the most interesting characters died early in the story & I must admit I was hoping all the way through that he’d somehow survived. Thorvald was certainly a very honourable Viking & certainly different from my perception of a Norseman. Alodie was a strong feisty woman who was also extremely brave. The pace did lag at times but overall flowed well.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This story is filled with lots of wild Viking action. Thorvald is holding on to a secret that is a burden on his heart and is leading him to do things he doesn’t believe in. Alodie is fierce and curios. When she puts herself in a position to be taken captive her life changes. The book is filled with enormous highs and lows. As these two struggle t9 make sense of their place in the world, they will fight for love and faith. You will enjoy the rousing arguments and the spitfire personality that is Alodie.

My review :
When two persons harboring secrets fight their intense attraction, what will win …
I was intrigued by this story because I liked the first book I read by Mrs Ingrid Hahn, sure it was not set during the same historical period, but I had to give it a try.
I confess I have lukewarm feelings here.
I had a hard time connecting with the main protagonists, while I admired Alodie’s courage, she annoyed me with her repetitive rambling about she paying the price for having had intercourse one time without the protection of marriage.
And then suddenly she jumps on the lap of the hero when she is supposed to be married to another, monster or not, it is quite unsettling after all her talk about god and everything else.
After she is a strong woman, she makes mistakes but she works hard and does not let misfortune overwhelm her.
After his many faults and flaws, I might have liked Thorvald a bit much than Alodie, he is mistaken in his beliefs, and even if for most of the story he refuses to see reason, he gave his words so he is bond to honor them.
Then when he understands the wrong of his way, he faces his fears and shame head held high.
This has all the ingredients to be a good tale, but I had some problems to relate with the protagonists’ journey. I skipped pages to go farther, as the story became more interesting once both’s motives were revealed, as they finally act as they must.
Why my 3.75 rounded to 4 stars.
