Pawn by Angela J. Ford was such a wild ride! It has a great world-building, though definitely on the dark side, and a heroine who is thrust into a quest by the Fae thanks to their holding over her her own freedom. Much of the story is full of action but also intrigue, since Maeve’s companion, Sandrine the Scholar, is not so forthcoming with the knowledge she has.
As for the narrator, she certainly did a great job differentiating the voices of all the characters (and there are many since there are a couple of chapters that are even from a different POV) and bringing this story to life. However, I think there’s room for improvement, especially with some slighter nuances, such as whispers, or when displaying certain emotions.
This book definitely packs a punch and has something to appeal to many: from magic/sorcery to sword skills and battles, from intrigue and a prophecy to hints of romance, lovers of Fantasy will definitely enjoy this new series.
Content: since the world is dark and the heroine has made a living with her sword skills, the violence levels in this book are bound to be high. I know for some this won’t bother them, but for me, the descriptions were at times too strong (or even visceral). Also, it must be noted that there’s a couple of times where, when describing female characters, the word “breasts” is mentioned, and one of those times going into even further detail (since said character is wearing very thin clothing, leaving nothing to the imagination). ~ 4 stars
The myriad of feelings I had while living in this world was almost overwhelming.
I was gripped into this story from the first line… What an adventure!!!
I can’t wait to read the next part!!!

Wow….Ms. Ford has done it again! This first installment of a new series has started with a bang. There is action and intrigue galore, and the characters really stand out. I can’t even begin to tell you how great the story is, buy it and you too will say, Wow!
Maeve is a bit like Wonder Woman
This book was amazing. I listened to the whole book in 2.5 days. I didn’t want to stop listening. The characters each have distinct personalities. The plot flows along well. There is a lot of action. I’d recommend this book to those looking for a Fae fantasy book with magic and dragons. The main character, Maeve is not exactly a good person but she isn’t evil either. She dresses like Wonder Woman and she is strong like Wonder Woman. She is also confident. I look forward to the next book.
Maeve has come to realize that the bad predicament that she has found herself in is of her own making. The Fae don’t have any control over those who don’t harm innocents. Even with that knowledge, she is not yet ready to change. She is desperate for her freedom from the Fae. This book has twists and turns. The characters have secrets. We learn some of those secrets in this first book.
The narrator did a great job. Her voice fluctuates and is appealing to the ear. It is easy to differentiate among the characters that she is portraying.
The cover was the first thing that caught my attention. It’s a beauty and it illustrates so much that could happen in the book!!
Maeve of Carn is a mighty warrior. She has superhuman strength and she uses her skills for hire. She cares nothing more, just to collect coin and survive another day. Until one day she is captured by dark Fae and kept as their slave. This is when the Prophecy of Erinyes comes out! Maeve must go on a mission with a scholar named Sardine. Along the journey she finds a old friend and perhaps two foes or will they become her friends as well? This was a fun ride!! I absolutely loved the world building. So unique yet attainable to envision myself. From Fae, to dragons, and goblins this was a intense book!! I found it very hard to put the book on pause. I enjoyed every minute of it and I’m looking forward to reading the next installment.
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator, Raquel Beattie did a fabulous job!! She was the perfect voice for Maeve and she truly brought the story alive for me. The descriptions, narrating other characters. Just perfect!!
This was a great story. The narrator was very pleasant to listen to and the story itself is outstanding. The characters are well developed and relatable. The world building is great and wonderful. Very easy to get immersed in this book. I’m very much looking forward to the next in the series! Highly recommended for all fantasy lovers!
Maeve of Carn is definitely super but she is NO hero. She’s a woman with a troubled past and in a load of trouble. Maeve is selfish, stubborn, strong-willed, determined, and her very character traits are what got her in the predicament she’s in. At the mercy of the dangerous, wicked, abusive, controlling, manipulating fae, Maeve launches off on a quest to do their dirty work in order to earn the thing she desires most: freedom.
Maeve has to undergo major self growth. She struggles with identity and self worth since she has no recollection of her past. She also has to deal with inner demons: is killing for coin wrong? Is thieving and pillaging for sport the result of a seared moral conscious?
As she wrestled with who she is and who she desires to be, Maeve is surrounded by a host of characters—all who are using her with their own motives. With much mystery, many secrets, and characters trying to manifest their own desires, Pawn is an amazing tale of a woman, who is a pawn of the fae and will go on a journey to discover who she is and is she willing to change.
I highly recommend this read and I’m excited for the rest of this series!
I’ve never read a book from this author before, so I didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I was so happy that I enjoyed it so much.
What’s the book about?
The premise of the book is straightforward. Maeve, a mercenary warrior, is captured by elves and is forced to work for them. She is then sent to a quest to retrieve shards that when united have the power to break the curse the elves are under.
There’s much more going on.
What started as a pretty standard book, it quickly started getting more and more interesting. As we going deeper into the book, we realize that there are some mysteries that we don’t know the answer about. Like Meave’s past and the destruction of her city, other people’s identity or past and other important plot points. I found the way that this book was written was very smart. The author gave the right amount of information each time, just enough to give some explanations and at the same time to make the reader want to learn more.
Maeve was complicated… not in a good way.
Here’s the thing. I appreciate that this wasn’t another book with another ‘strong’ female character that ended up being annoying and mean to everyone. The author did try to give Meave a softer side and make an actual human being with emotions, fears and so on, but I didn’t really like how it was done. Maeve was described as a tough bloodthirsty warrior but in most of the book she would openly cry for about anything and she would generally be very sensitive. We can understand that her capture made her softer, but it still felt like the person who was described was different from the one I saw on the story. Maeve felt off to me for the most part and I didn’t get as invested in her as I’d like to.
Should you read this book?
Definitely yes. Pawn is a well-written book with its own originality. The characters have depth to them and even the side characters get good development. If you like quest type of stories, in a rich fantasy setting, this book can be a page-turner for you.
I received a free of the book by the author. This is an honest review.
I know there are a LOT of fae stories out there right now . . . but Angela’s take was so unique, and the adventure completely swept me away. Can’t wait for book 2!
Honestly, I had no idea what this book was going to be about. I just love Angela J. Ford, so I had to read it. I was imagining that it was going to be some sort of pro-fae warrior book lmao. I should read blurbs.
ANYWAY- It wasn’t that, it was much much more than that. I was instantly swept into Maeve’s personality and can’t wait to see her kick some ass in the upcoming books. This story (in true Angela fashion) has many moving parts, with the readers gaining more knowledge than the characters.
I am excited to see how all that we discover in this book will affect the quest that Maeve is on, and if she will make it out alive. 100% already on my list for best book of 2020.
Pawn (Night of the Dark Fae #1), my second read from author Angela J. Ford. Well-written fantasy with intriguing characters. I look forward to Night of the Dark Fae #2. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.” (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
the last of her kind finds herself on a quest to earn her freedom but at what cost.
This was a fabulous story! I loved the adventures and the amazing characters. The narrator was amazing.
Maeve a 30-year-old (or so), an anti-hero heroine, born with superhuman strength sells her abilities to mercenaries and warlords in exchange for wealth. Slaying innocent people without looking behind. In the midst of a raid, on a night with a full moon, she’s being captured by the Dark Fae. Thrown on the Dungeon of the Damned, left to rot for about a month – they offer her a deal, to find some relics that are rumored to have the power to break all the curses in exchange for her freedom. Without any choice, Maeve sets off on a quest guided by the Scholar – a grumpy old lady.
The book is so different, there is no lady in distress, no hero here. She’s the opposite, she sells her powers to the ones who have money for it, slaying innocent people without thinking twice, spends money on pleasure, food, and comfort. She’s the bad guy, a thief and a murderer who loves being victorious at the end of a battle-winning is what she’s living for and brings her a rush of excitement that fills her with pleasure.
Its a story about treasure hunting with the fae, orcs, goblins, dragons and so many more characters, each unique in their own way, with damned islands where no one even dares going, with eels big as a ship that would kill you in a blink of an eye, with souls trapped on an island that with a simple touch makes you feel and see what happened to them. It has a lot of characters and elements but at the same time, it doesn’t make you feel overwhelmed because they’re synced so nicely and the story just flows. I can’t even remember how many times I’ve just lost track of time while reading this story.
The story has bits and pieces of romance, especially between Maeve and Caspian (a warlord she’s been doing raids with for a while), even tho their relationship seems complicated, they act sometimes as they love each other but don’t say the words, and other times they act as best friends. However, during her quest, she meets two new brothers: Ingram and Imer and things start to get complicated.
The book can have some triggers for people who don’t like reading about blood, murder, prostitutes, etc. Overall I’d say the book is more suitable for the 18+ because the murder scenes are a little bit descriptive.
