Cupboards Full of Skeletons is the first novel in the Abandoned Wives and Widows Club series of thrilling, heart-warming, sometimes laugh out loud, and sometimes dark, mystery novels. They relate the mad antics of a group of retired New Zealand women as they delve into the gritty underbelly of life and murder.Lydia Thompson’s husband of over forty years has died. Her first thoughts are thank … thank goodness he’s gone at last, but whoops – did I help him on his way? As she discovers the terrible secrets he’s kept from her, any remorse she has for her actions crumbles.
On the plus side, for the first time in her adult life she has made some friends. They indulge in coffee and cake in a local cafe, and generally misbehaved.
Then, when the father of her gorgeous great grandson dies and the police say it was suicide, she knows it was nothing of the sort. Naturally she persuades the group to investigate.
That’s when the real trouble starts.

This was a really fun read! It’s a cozy but it has a bite! I love the characters of older ladies who have no problem turning from sweet old ladies to warrior women when they need to. This book made me laugh and cry and cheer and laugh some more. Lydia, who is newly widowed, has seen the other women at a cafe she frequented with her controlling husband. Now, footloose and fancy free, she is invited to join them as they eat, laugh and talk. When a much younger acquaintance supposedly commits suicide, Lydia smells a rat and starts investigating. The other ladies join in to protect her and the game is afoot. LOL! There is some serious subjects along with some foul language so if that bothers you then pick something else. But if you’re OK with that, then jump in because you will definitely have some laughs! Really good start to what I hope will be a long series.

Welcome to the Club !! . . .
Lydia Thompson’s husband of over forty years had died and apparently he had kept many dark secrets from her. So she readily admits that she doesn’t miss him and is actually glad that he is gone. Strangely enough, her new status has opened the door to so many more pleasures. Now she controlled her money. And she has met a group of friends who have a unique club called The Abandoned Wives and Widows Club, the members being in their 60’s and strongly enjoying themselves. Getting together for coffee and cake is at the top of the list!
So when the father of Lydia’s great-grandson died, the police calling it suicide, Lydia wasn’t accepting that. So The Abandoned Wives and Widows Club went into action to investigate and discover the truth. How sharp are these ladies? Can they find out what really happened and bring the killer to justice?
This is a bit different from the other cozies I have read. In some ways it is “darker” than I would have anticipated. Yet the humor interspersed keeps it from getting too deep into the darkness. So it was a good blend and a good story, definitely a series you’ll want to stay with!
This was an entertaining read which kept me laughing throughout this book thanks to the well written story line and character work.
