A great start to a new series. Characters with tons of depth, and a great story in a very believable world. I was able to read all day but if I’m sure I would have stayed up all night to finish this engrossing story if necessary. I did not want to put it down.
Brian Shea (with LT Ryan) absolutely delivers with this first book in the Rachel Hatch series. Shea’s own background in law enforcement and the military shines through on every page, the story moves at a nice clip, but above all he’s creating a unique and compelling series character.
Absolutely worth a read if you enjoy a genuine page-turner.
When it looks like Rachel’s estranged twin sister has been murdered, she returns to the town she is from to find out what happened. As she searches for answers she gets herself in a boatload of trouble. With the help of the new town sheriff, she discovers the secrets the town has been hiding. Rachel is such a badass! I love her character and the sheriff’s character. This book is easy to read and a page turner. L. T. Ryan is a great storyteller and one of my favorite authors. Read and enjoy!
5 stars . I rarely give 5 stars to a book unless I read it more than once but this was very good.
Every book that is written is a page-turner and a must-read
And here I thought Rachel was a chicken farmer. Boy was I wrong. Ryan and Shea are onto something here…
It’s always fun to discover a new series with strong lead characters and ample opportunity for future installments. “Drift” by L.T. Ryan and Detective Brian Shea comes alive with all its potency right out of the gate, and it never hits a lull.
In this first book, we meet the fearsome and fearless Rachel Hatch. She embodies all the skills of a combat machine with cunning, bravery and a sense of purpose that makes her unstoppable. When she gets news of her twin sister’s death, she returns to her former home in Colorado, intent on proving her sister’s death was not accidental and finding the bastard who killed her.
The town she returns to has a new sheriff, though Hatch doesn’t trust him any more than she did his predecessor—a corrupt man beholden to the largest employer in the community, a shady operation that grows richer as it sucks the lifeblood out of the town. But if Rachel is going to get anywhere on this case, she must let him work with her instead of against her.
The pairing of Rachel and Sheriff Dalton Savage works perfectly. They bring a combustible mix of agendas, but they’re smart enough to realize each other’s strengths and value. I look forward to many more terrific adventures in righting wrongs in this dynamic duo’s future!
Can’t wait for book 2! Was so disappointed to find it’s not out yet
Hatch is a female Jack Reacher wannabe. As such, she is footloose and tough. When her twin sister is killed, she returns home to find the killer. In her search, she uncovers secrets that may well destroy the town where she grew up. Her relationship with the sheriff (Savage, a bit of tongue in cheek) changes from outright hostility to borderline romantic. But her emotions remain pretty subterranean for him, her mother, her niece and nephew and her dead sister. Because of her past experiences in the Middle East, she is pretty sealed off from feelings. Despite her fleeting thoughts about Savage and her first high school love, this kind of emotional lockdown leaves me, as the reader, feeling too distant from Hatch to really care about what happens. And, her superwoman ability to come back from a brutal “accident” alienates me further. If you’re in to Reacher-like heroes, you’ll probably come away with a different reaction to this first novel in the series. It’s a quick read, and I may give another later book in the series a read–just to see if Hatch’s character reflects an emotional arc.
This was a murder mystery that takes place in a small town. After 15 years of being away, an ex-military crime investigator with special ops combat skills returns to her childhood home intent on solving the suspicious death of her twin sister and seeking retribution. She has been adrift in her own life since leaving the military following an injury. She teams up with the local sheriff to solve the crime which goes far beyond just her sister’s death and leads to her becoming a target as well. It is not a very complicated plot. Most of the “bad guys” and their underlying motivations are pretty apparent, but the story moves at a good pace with several action scenes where the ex-military investigator gets to show her skills. I liked the characters and the story held my interest.
I’ve read all of the Rachel Hatch books so far and love em all!
This author came up as a recommended read on my kindle. I checked them out and read descriptions of three different series and decided to start with this one. I loved it. As the blurbs say, if you’re a Jack Reacher fan you’ll enjoy this series, though this time we have a female former military cop. And book one starts with something personal.
Hatch is called home (for the first time since she left 15 years ago) after her sister dies. Hatch knows it isn’t an accident and puts the new sheriff on warning that she’ll be doing her own investigation. While the new sheriff, Savage, is experienced his department of three is not. Rachel’s experience comes in handy. As they continue to investigate things unfold making the issue bigger and far more dangerous.
I loved the book. The book is detailed and specific so you feel like you are on the scene. As one of the authors is a former police officer that helps immensely. The action is fast paced and taut. I found myself holding my breath at points and my pulse racing at other points.
The ending to this book initially makes you think things are going to go one way but then veer completely in a different direction, setting up book two. Can’t wait to start it.
