Set in the same world as the New York Times bestselling Parasol Protectorate, this bestselling young adult steampunk series debut is filled with all the saucy adventure and droll humor Gail Carriger’s legions of fans have come to adore.Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners–and the … proper manners–and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.
But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine’s, young ladies learn to finish…everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage–in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year’s education.more

I have been looking forward to reading this series for a while now and, although I enjoyed the story, I wasn’t wowed by it. The characters are great and the setting is interesting and fascinating, but I found many of the characters names hard to pronounce and there are many old fashion words used that I had to look up. I really enjoyed the …
I got this book as a daily special on Audible and knew nothing about it. I was so happily surprised by this super-clever, steam punk YA full of very original characters and plot devices. I’m now on book 3 and moving on!
I am trying to get a read to I can skip through and read it is a very long book in my honor just trying to go through websites ti see where I can read this without reading with my ones eyes and mouth just with my ears
This is such a fun book/series! It is one of my favorites. I think I’ve listened to it more than half a dozen times over the years. No swearing or sex. There is reoccurring comments on décolletage and that’s it. Gail Carriger is an extremely creative woman with her writing. You can get a glimpse even in the titles of this series of books. …
I love anything with the historical steampunk theme and this book checks that box for me. I have never read a fantasy book like this. There are regular snooty normals, some highly gifted kids which get recruited for espionage school, vampires, werewolves and more. There is great attention to detail. For example, the scene involving “India rubber”. …
This was a re-read for me, the first time I consumed this book as an audio book from my library. After listening to most of Gail’s book I decided that I absolutely loved her and decided to buy everything she has written. Which I have to do over time there really is quite a few. I really want to give this author so much support as I can, but I can …

I wanted to read this for a while and waited for three weeks to get my copy as it was on hold at the e-book library. I love spy and crime books and con artists intrigue me. I did not know that this book also had some paranormal creatures …
