British poet Kevine Walcott offers no biographical information, but her roots are evident in her poetic references and language. She writes of Europe, her home in Beckenham, England, but her soaring soul goes beyond place into the atmosphere of human responses to nature, home, relationships, art, passion, and country.
The poems in this collection are beautifully written, eloquent in form, and accessible to all readers. Kevine goes to the core of her emotional responses to her subject matter, taking the reader on the several journeys expressed in this collection of poems. Sharing an example of the poetic content of this fine little book is the invitation for sharing Kevine’s gifts:
Oh, My Country
Take me to the plains where the grass is green and pleasant,
Take me to a land of golden sunshine.
Take me to a land where horses gallop freely,
Where the mountains zig-zagged beneath the heavenly skies,
A land where mountains touch skies –
Take me to the Blue Mountains of Jamaica,
Take me to the poppy fields of England.
Where the hawks fought over the skies, where the brave rose and where greatness fell
Arise, my country, sleep we shall not;
When the going gets tough and the markets fall, we shall remember the greatness and resilience of our past:
The wars we fought, the victories we won –
Never forgotten our heroes in the skies and their boots on the ground;
The waves we will rule, and Babylon will fall –
Men and women from across the oceans: strong, fearless and mighty they came, mighty they fought.
From thy belly you cried unto me;
From the coal mines of the north to the bauxite fields of the Cockpits you toiled.
Fist high, swing high, stand tall – we shall show the route to glory.
Arise, my country, your greatest years are yet to come.
Sensitive and illuminating, this is a worthy collection of poetry.
