Interview with the Author
Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer?
A: I’m an attorney and have done a lot of technical writing, but knew I wanted to write novels. I thought I’d find time when I retired. Fate stepped in, as it often does, and put me on this path sooner. I broke my neck in an auto accident and suffered from double vision for months. I couldn’t read or watch TV, so I conceived the plot for my Rosemont series.
Q: Why did you decide to write a series?
A: I prefer television series to movies. The longer format of television allows for deeper character development. The same holds true for series fiction. I like to fall in love with a character or hate a character (but root for them to change their ways). I feel like Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi from Alexander McCall Smith’s Ladies’ Detective Agency series are old friends. I wanted to recreate that sort of connection in the Rosemont series.
Q: What other authors do you read or admire?
A: I’m a fan of women’s fiction, women’s sagas, and romance. I love Rosamunde Pilcher’s later trilogy -The Shell Seekers, Coming Home, and September. Jan Karon’s Mitford series creates an enchanting world, as does Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove. My Rosemont series is set in the current day, but I’ve tried to capture a feeling of camaraderie and connection (among the good guys) that takes us back to a slightly simpler time and place.
Q: What are your favorite books?
A: In addition to the works I’ve already mentioned, I adored Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and A Long Way from Chicago.
Q: Who has had the greatest influence on your author life?
A: My dad–without question. He told me or read me a bedtime story every night of my childhood, often adding his own twists and turns to the plots or dialogue. He had an incredible, gentle sense of humor. He also wrote novels–who-done-its–when he retired. I have 17 of his manuscripts and can feel his comforting presence in the room with me when I pick up his pages and read.
Q: What of your own interests have you written about in the Rosemont series?
A: I love my home and all things related to homemaking: cooking, gardening, decorating, and entertaining. I love celebrating all of the seasons and I change my decor for Easter, 4th of July, fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring. I’m also addicted to vintage silver and all sorts of china, with a special fondness for teapots.

I love Barbara Hinske’s series and was so happy to catch up with all her wonderful characters! If you haven’t started the series, do it now!
DELIGHTFUL!
If you enjoy reading books where the author makes you feel as though you’re a character in the story, then SHELVING DOUBTS (as well as the entire Rosemont Series) is for you! This book may be read as a stand alone. However, to best enjoy it, it needs to be read in sequential order. This is Book #6. Barbara Hinske has had readers waiting a while for this latest release and it is the best one to date! She brings back her characters we all know and love and introduces us to just a few new ones.
Hinske’s writing is clever, her characters believable, the plot is excellent and the ending is very unexpected. She always writes about families, friends and dogs all of which are my favorite subjects. This time she adds in the dimension of the Rare Book Collection at the College where Maggie is now President. (Books are the another thing I would add to my list of favorites!) You can always count on this author to entertain you!
I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
I stumbled upon the Rosemont series with Coming to Rosemont in 2015 and have waited eagerly for each new installment. The characters have become almost friends. They have changed, grown as people while experiencing joy and tragedy and everything in between. The newest book, Shelving Doubts, lives up to its predecessors’ heritage.
While the book could be read as a stand alone, beginning with the first book and reading them all in order provides a richer reading experience. Maggie Martin and her second husband veterinarian John Allen and characters from previous books weave in and out of the story. The two newest characters, Josh Newlon, Maggie’s assistant and Sunday Sloan, librarian and rare book expert, have secrets and mysteries to solve. The fact that the primary mystery revolves around books, particularly rare books, made my attraction even stronger. I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it. Loved it and have recommended the entire series it to a couple of friends. I received an ARC from the author but the review is my own opinion.
I love this series! So well written and I adore the characters. Barbara Hinske captures the true meaning of Christmas in this touching sixth book of the series. You could read it as a stand alone, but each book is a fairly quick read and so worth your time! 4 stars
Shelving Doubts by Barbara Hinske is part of the Rosemont Series and is a mystery. When the college librarian realizes that one of their rare books is missing and may be in a London Bookstore in their rare book section. She places a call to Highpointe College President Maggie Martin.. Things aren’t adding up and only getting more complicated. All of the regular Rosemont characters are back, each with their own set of circumstances. On top of all that a Christmas dinner that starts off quite small becomes a big celebration of friends. Heartwarming and mysterious read. I would definitely recommend it,
This book in the series introduced new characters and new dogs; a black lab named Dan and a golden named Cooper. They were certainly a hit with baby Julia. A new mystery, this time at Highpointe College with rare books. And a new romance also brews. Love this series!
