This book was given to me as a gift and I’m so glad I received it! The author is new to me, but it was just the kind of one-day page-turner that I was in the mood for. Twisted and well-told, this is an author to watch!
How far can you run from your past before it catches with you?
Can you ever really reinvent yourself?
Through one woman’s desperate attempts to hide from her past, HURRY HOME explores issues of family trauma and long-buried secrets. When her sister shows up pregnant, she must confront the lies she’s been telling her partner about who she is, and who she’s been. HURRY HOME is a fascinating character study where we’re never entirely certain who we’re supposed to be rooting for, taking us inside the lives of women struggling to shed past mistakes and start new lives while hiding from a growing tide of danger.
A gripping exploration of how the darkness of the past can come to find us in the present, no matter how hard we try to run from it.
This is the first book I’ve read by Roz Nay, and I only wish I had discovered her work sooner. HURRY HOME is a deftly plotted and brilliantly written take on sibling relationships that pulls the rug out from under the reader little by little, and then all at once. A must-read for thriller and suspense fans.
Sisters Alex and Ruth have a secret from their childhood that has haunted them into adulthood. When Ruth appears on Alex’s doorstep, it is the beginning of the unraveling of their secret. The story is riveting and contains many twists and turns before revealing their long kept secret.
Roz Nay writes novels that are meant to shock and surprise you. In her latest, Hurry Home, she tells a tale of two sisters and the bond they share.
Alex is a social worker, determined to make the lives of children better. She feels it is her mission to save them.
Ruth is Alex’s older sister, who ran away from home at a relatively young age. According to Alex, Ruth is the reason that her family was torn apart.
Alex lives with Chase, a good and wholesome man. She also has a deep friendship with Sully, a cop. Alex hides much of her past from both of them, and makes Ruth promise not to divulge their past to Chase when Ruth shows up on Alex’s doorstep, pregnant and needing a place to live.
As details of their childhood begin to surface, told by both Ruth and Alex, you question who is telling the truth and who you can trust.
I recognized most of what was going to happen, as there were tons of clues throughout the book, but the final twist on the last page was unexpected.
#HurryHome #RozNay
Hurry Home by Roz Nay is a super slow burn full of secrets and you never know quite who to trust. There are two viewpoints which are Alex and her big sister Ruth’s, and I would definitely call them both unreliable narrators. Alex seems like the ‘good girl’ while Ruth seems like nothing but trouble, and it brings up the question, are things really as they appear? It was an interesting look at the bonds of sisters and just how far they will go to protect their secrets. One thing that was a little confusing is that the synopsis mentions a local child going missing when in fact that never happens in the book. I’m not sure I understand what was up with that, and it threw me off a little.
I really liked how the book was broken up by sections, and we start out with the sisters in present day then the next part is the past, and then the book ends with the present again. I loved how the secrets of both sisters slowly unraveled throughout the book, and thanks to the short chapters the book didn’t feel like a slow read, even though the pacing itself is on the slow side. I can’t say I was a fan of either of the sisters, but I really liked the plot and found it to be more of a drama than a mystery or thriller. There is definitely a touch of mystery, but overall I would call this a psychological/family drama.
There were quite a few things that surprised me about Hurry Home and it was a sad, but enjoyable read. I was also a huge fan of the ending because I am all about people getting what they deserve. This is my first read from Nay and I really enjoyed her writing style, so I will definitely be checking out her other book, Our Little Secret. If you are a fan of quick, enjoyable reads with a slower pace and diabolical characters this one is for you!
Sister’s and Secrets
Alex is living her dream life, far away from her childhood memories. She has a good job, a boyfriend who loves her and a good friend to talk to when she needs someone to talk to. Dark secrets from her past a buried safely away…that is until her sister returns.
Ruth is Alex’s older sister whom she hasn’t seen for many years. Not since Ruth left with her boyfriend from the family home to never return. Now she is back on Alex’s doorstep, pregnant and needing help. Alex offers to help her but she must never talk of the past to anyone.
This book is engaging from the start to the finish. When the truth about the past comes out which sister is telling the truth? I didn’t see the twist at the end coming and I never would have guessed the ending. I am still not sure which sister to believe.
I couldn’t put the book down and stayed up way too late at night reading it. It was definitely a page turner. I would recommend it .
Thanks to Roz Nay, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of the book for an honest review.
Having read Roz Nay’s previous book, I was very excited to read this one. I was certainly not disappointed as I was instantly drawn into the suspenseful domestic drama presented here. Alexandra Van Ness is happily living in the Rocky Mountains with her boyfriend Chase when her sister Ruth unexpectedly shows up. Ruth is pregnant, and Alex reluctantly agrees that she can stay with them as long as she doesn’t expose the secrets the sisters carry from their past. I thought it was very interesting that the secrets seemed to involve a child and Alex worked for child protective services. Anyway, I liked that Nay revealed the secrets slowly and in a way that kept me reading. The mystery was a puzzle, with new pieces added occasionally and at just the right moments. The pacing was expertly done in a way that drew me into the mystery. The story was suspenseful all the way to the end and even included some surprises that I had not guessed at all! I highly recommend this book to fans of domestic drama or mysteries. I’m not sure that I would categorize it as a thriller, but it was a good, satisfying read.

Alex is a child protection social worker. She pours her heart and soul into protecting children from abusive parents, neglect. She’s willing to do just about anything to defend these children.
Her sister, Ruth, shows up unexpectedly … they haven’t been in contact for 10 years. During their childhood, Ruth was always the troublemaker, involving her sister. Not much has changed. Ruth is in trouble … pregnant .. and on the run from her drug dealer boyfriend. Ruth grabbed a lot of drugs and a lot of cash when she left.
Alex’s boyfriend knows little of her upbringing. So when Ruth starts talking about their childhood … their stories don’t exactly match.
Who’s lying? Why? What is it that neither of them want revealed?
There’s no love lost between the sisters as this well-written story bounces back and forth between the girls and between times … childhood and adulthood. I didn’t particularly like either of the sisters. Even the secondary characters made me cringe for one reason or another…. because they were written skillfully enough to evoke my emotions. The plot is a bit complex, but riveting. The ending was totally unexpected.
Many thanks to the author / Crooked Lane Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A very interesting story that keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering just whose truth is real. We all remember things differently but some of us color our memories to suit ourselves. Families can be very dysfunctional too so there’s an added intrigue as well. Then you add in our other relationships with significant others and coworkers etc. and what we choose to show them. So many different faces to present and so many different stories to tell. This one involves the past and the present and the fate of several different children. Very gripping story!
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it.
Alexandra (Alex) Van Ness,25, is a social worker with a Family Services agency and takes her cases to heart – especially those involving the safety of young children. She lives with her boyfriend of two years, Chase Kennedy, and feels pretty good about her life now; her work is satisfying and her relationship with Chase is going well.
An unexpected knock on their door late one afternoon will change that. Standing in the doorway is Alex’s older sister Ruth, 30. The two sisters have been estranged for ten years. Their childhood had been tumultuous and painful. Ruth left at age 20 when her father disowned her, but it was an incident seven years prior that caused the family to fall apart.
Each of the sisters holds anger and resentment towards the other, and each is keeping secrets and telling lies. Told in each of their voices in alternating chapters, readers will find themselves changing allegiances between the two often.
A well-written and enjoyable read, this book rates 3.5 stars from me.
My thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for allowing me to read an ARC of the book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Two sisters who have been estranged for 10 years reunite when one shows up on the others doorstep. One good sister, one bad sister. But, which one is which? One is a social worker with Children’s Protective Services, the other is a former drug user who has spent time in jail.
Lots of twists and turns. A few surprises. And lots of secrets….the best element of any story.
The story ramped up in the second half. While is also became a little more predictable, it was interesting to see how it evolved. Not everything is as it seems.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a review.
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of Hurry Home. If you love dark, compelling thrillers, Roz Nay’s Hurry Home should be at the top of your to-be-read list. Through sisters, Alex and Ruth, Nay expertly delves into the complexities of shared histories, grief and family loyalties. Roz Nay delivers and enthralling tale full of twists and turns that will leave you breathless and asking, “What just happened?”
Hurry Home is a book full of secrets, lies, misconceptions and sisters !
The story is told from both sisters viewpoint and you soon begin to wonder why is telling the truth?
Not sure either of them are the nicest sister you would ever want for yourself.
Twists and turns keep those pages turning quickly.
Another stellar read by Roz Nay.
Thanks to Net Galley , Simon and Schuster Canada, Simon and Schuster Mystery and Thrillers for a great and enjoyable read.
In HURRY HOME, Roz Nay expertly creates real and deeply flawed characters who pull you in and hold you close, only to make you question and shift your allegiances as the story unfolds. This tale about two sisters who love—and love to hate—is as dark as it is twisty, emotional and suspenseful. It’s one that should be at the top of your “to read” list right now.

A good story to pass the time. It is about Alex Van Ness and her estranged sister Ruth. When Ruth shows up things start going sideways. A mystery and plenty of emotion. Kept my attention figuring out the ins and outs of the mystery of the past that comes into play in their present. A good case of Blood is stronger. Well worth the read.
Compelling and unsettling, Hurry Home is a twisted tale of sisterhood and deftly explores how we may be done with the past, but it’s almost never done torturing us.
In Roz Nay’s twisty HURRY HOME, nothing—and no one—is what it seems. Part nuanced exploration of how tragedy can shatter a family and part nail-biting psychological thriller, this book will keep you guessing until the end!
