Ten Tales of a Dark Tomorrow is hands down the best anthology I have read in quite some time. The author does an absolutely amazing job of building 10 stories that have a Twilight Zone nostalgia to them. This feeling of nostalgia makes each story an old friend with a new twist.
The first story “My Little Girl” is the perfect opening to the anthology, creating a sense of wonder and exhilaration as a mother does the unimaginable for her little girl.
“The Case for Humanity” finds species from allover the galaxy holding a hearing to determine man kinds worthiness to exist or to be terminated. The species in defense of humanity comes as a complete surprise.
“Let’s Ride Bikes” is an utterly heartbreaking story that while a fantasy about 2 best friends and their bikes touches so close to actual events it will leave a lasting impression on you.
Every story has it’s own world, making it uniquely different from the other stories and at the same time flow evenly from story to story as if each one lead naturally into the next.
In his introduction Mr Kuhn explains that one of his goals was to capture those feelings of his youth as he explored the world of the Twilight Zone series and it can be said with all honesty he did not fall short of the goal.
I found that every story (and I honestly mean every single story) gave me a sense of awe, suspense and occasionally a reminder that not all that is dark is a loss. That sometimes in the darkness we can find the light.
I can go on and on about each story and how well they were written, like “Nana’s Memory Box” and the way they story reminds us that memories both good and bad play a valuable part in who we are.
One last thing in his acknowledgement at the end of the book the author goes over everyone that helped to make this book possible and I feel it would be wrong for me to not acknowledge that help as well.
If I could have been a writer, this is the kind of writing I would have liked to have done. Thankfully Mr Kuhn is more than skilled at making magic with pen and paper.
This is one book that fans across every genre should have on their shelf.
Very good stories.
Thought-provoking and light. Good read.
Lots of twists and turns in Kuhn’s mind and in his short stories. Sort of Stephen Kingish.
I loved this book so much! I’m not usually a fan of short stories because I tend to get invested, then get pissed when the story ends and I wanted to continue to see where the characters were going.
These stories were perfect though! They’re very similar to ‘The Twilight Zone’ (a show I adore) and have just the right amount of creepiness and suspense without being over-the-top or too wordy.
If you love the classic ‘Twilight Zone’ shows, then I absolutely recommend reading this. This was the perfect thing to read after the heaviness of my last book.
I enjoyed this collection ton of tales very much. Kuhn is a great writer and visionary.
I was kinda skeptical about the reviews saying it was like twilight zone episodes. Well it is and it great! Very entertaining. Recommend!
I will be honest with you guys, I didn’t expect to love a collection of supernatural short stories all that much. But I have loved Kuhn’s work in the past so I gave these a whirl.
Was I ever happy to be wrong again. Fans of The Twilight Zone will LOVE these, they contain all of the same creepy elements.
I kept expecting Rod Serling to pop up and say, “Imagine if you will a world where Deetz enjoys the supernatural…” Lolz.
My favorites were The Case Against Humanity and Let’s Ride Bikes but I enjoyed them all!
A nice collection of short stories. Some very creative ideas, some I’ve never seen before, but the stories lack life. The plots are well constructed, the twists creative but the characters just seem to float through the story never really coming to life.
A disappointing waste of time.
