“Wilde combines hardboiled noir and Jewish folklore in this action-packed, perfectly paced paranormal romp. … the real star is Ash’s hilariously snarky narrative voice which is archly sarcastic but never mean. … Wilde balances exuberant wit with deep compassion and handles Ash’s chronic pain and fragmented family with care. This giddy, sexy series launch is a delight.” – Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

This book is saucy and intriguing. I thought the storyline was absolutely fantastic. It was unique and kept my interest the entire time. The NSFW scenes seemed a bit much and unnecessary towards the beginning of the book, but by the end, they started to feel more normal. There’s not too much which I appreciated it. I absolutely loved the idea that she’s had a power that was suppressed her entire life. Ashira is not a likable person, but is a wonderful character. I really loved her! I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
I received this audiobook through NetGalley for a free and fair review. All opinions are my own and in no way reflect the author, publisher or NetGalley.
Ash, a detective, while on a case finds herself in her own mystery. Lost magic, hidden tattoo, missing father, secretive mother and so much more. Balance it out with hot rival from her past in the with the name Levi and Ash has her hands full.
As an avid reader and audio listener, I found this book to be entertaining. This is my first Deborah Wilde book. Her use of description of everything to the most minute detail got slightly on my nerves, but the story line was interesting enough. As with all audio books I have to ramp up the speed because it is too slow, this one wasn’t that bad. The narrator Hollie Jackson did a good job.
The Blood and Ash series is a stay up all night and look haggard the next day kids kinda book. This series will definitely remain in your favorites that you will re-read often. I definitely plan to read the rest of the series and hands down the narration is fantastic. The world building is very interesting and believe-able. In this world only a small percentage of the population has magical powers. The more powerful magic wielders strictly register and monitor the others with power for safety and stability within the human population. The overall storyline is action packed and filled with humor, evil plots, and a dash of romance. This book wraps up nicely but still has plenty too figure out in other books and I am excited to see what happens next. I received this book as an ARC from the author and I highly recommend it!
This is my first book of Wilde’s and the cover artwork captivated my attention. It’s very well done. I love wit and banter in books, so when I read the description as a “Snarky Supernatural Detective Series”, I was hooked. Even partway through the first chapter, I was in love and was ready to rate this with 5 stars. Sadly, the book started rolling downhill for me. Slowly at first, but was all but sprinting by the end. It tears me apart to leave bad reviews, but I cannot find hardly any positives to highlight, and I always give my honest opinion.
Snark is awesome and something I love in books, but I never realized there was a level of too much until this book. After a few chapters, it started to distract from the story and mystery. The plot wasn’t even really defined throughout the book. The main story would progress, then jump locations as if she forgot she needed to include a plot point, and then jump back on track. Even in a magic based book it could be used to explain the jumps, but she didn’t even use that crutch. The main background of magic in itself with the governing bodies isn’t well explained and I found myself floundering for most of the book to figure it out. The romance is awkward and rushed. And by the time I was halfway through the book, I wanted to quit reading. I just wanted to skip ahead to the end but forced myself to keep going; causing me to skim the final few chapters. The ends are loosely tied leaving more confusion. There is nothing BUT confusion.
In the end I looked up the author expecting this to be her first publication, but no, she has several books published. And most of the reviews are glowing. I just can’t wrap my head around it. I understand each person has their own tastes but I just don’t understand the fascination and adoration. I really tried to find at least some enjoyment in this book and her writing, but I just can’t. The potential for a great story is there; I just expected there to be more from a polished author.
