On the wrong side of space, the shadows can kill you….Was it wrong to be excited about that?Lita had a special gift, or curse, depending on how you viewed naturally destructive people.Idle hands and all that… shadows.
Trees that eat people…bring it on.
The only part that truly tested her was dealing with an arrogant but sexy know-it-all cyborg. Sure, he may be her boss, but he’s not endowed with her skills and there is no one in the universe who knows machines better than her.
Or so she thought…

A lot happening and I got lost a bit
Unexpected Enemy is the first book I have read from the Unexpected Series by Layla Stone. I don’t read a lot of Sci-Fi and very little colonization so I was not sure what to expect as I tried to broaden my reading horizons. To be truthful I am still not sure whether it is for me or not. I think it will take another one or two books to really tell. Overall I thought the story was interesting and there is definitely a lot that happens in the story. It was a bit confusing to me but I was expecting that it could be when I picked up the book. Plus I get the feeling that it would be beneficial to have read the previous books it the series to get a some background. The characters were interesting and there was a lot of action and some danger that they were going through. In the end this was an okay story for me.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
This is a very well-written action packed and humorous story that has strong well-developed characters that you will like. The story has a lot of twists, turns, action, adventure, mystery and chemistry. I need to go back and read previous books by this Author and I cannot wait for more. A must read

Lita has a magical touch with mechanics and a secret she can’t share on pain of death. Sands is her boss but finds her irresistible. When they head out for a mission to take the Boore home, danger strikes, and Lita gets help from a most unlikely source.
Lita, mechanic on a Federation star carrier, finished the latest project she had worked on to keep her occupied. It should have taken her a year, but it only took 6 months to build the flying race vehicle from scratch. Now she needed something else to challenge her mind. When she was 10 years old, her father, who knew nothing about raising a child, took her to his shop and taught her everything he knew about rebuilding engines, power and torque, boosting performance, body paint, and fabrication. She was an awesome mechanic now because of that early experience.
Katie, another mechanic, brought an energy drink to Lita, her favorite, hoping to bribe her to tell where a leak was in the item she had been given to fix. Lita said that was boring and wouldn’t trade for the information, so Katie added an EMP with special properties and explosive capability that hooked Lita’s interest. She gave her all the details she needed to find and fix the hyper fluid leak as Katie stood there amazed at how Lita seemed to have an almost telepathic link to the ships when she diagnosed issues. She saw Sands, lead mechanic and her boss, walking toward her. He rarely talked to people, using the Minky pads to send out assignments. She would love exploring his cybernetic arm. The work was beautiful! Katie, whose race could read emotions, warned Lita he was not happy and she quickly left.
Sands needed her hopper for a mission and knew it would take 2 hours to finish. He grabbed up the parts and told her to come along with him and giving her permission to grab all the energy drinks she could find. They were heading to the Outworlds, and she tingled with excitement at the danger!
Sands wanted to know what was in her tool bag when he heard a non-Federation communication device play an Earth song – he was curious as to what else she smuggled in. Instead of complying with her boss’ request, she offered to trade – she wanted to see his cyborg arm up close. So he showed her his arm that didn’t have a solid casing but instead consisted of cables and rods shaped like an arm, but in a functional way. She loved it! Watching the cogs move excited her and she had an overwhelming desire to touch!
Sands and Lita will have to depend on each other in the hostile environment they are traveling to on the mission to return the Boore to their home planet. Their mechanical engineering expertise, far above that of others, makes them a really strong match for each other and a great combination to take on this mission. They both have secrets that will play a part in the story. But the attraction between Sands and Lita will be inevitable for this fascinating couple!
There is so much going on in this story. I love the story line and the cast of characters we meet along the way! Grab your copy and share this dangerous adventure to see if they all make it back after their mission. There are still surprises to come in this book, so don’t miss it!
Book four of the Unexpected series a well written story that kept me turning pages. Cyborg Sands and gremlin Lita’s story there is suspense, drama, danger, and romance. I enjoyed reading. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed the slow burn romance. I loved the chemistry and attraction between Sands and Lita. I thought the story was interesting and it kept my attention easily. This book offers lots of emotions, tension, drama and excitement.
We start off with Lita a human/? mechanic and her boss Sands a cyborg/?. I really like the characters. Sometimes it is a little overwhelming on how much is going on. Loved the Epilogue. I have not read any other books from this series, however I have read other books from this author’s other series which helped me with the different species. This is a full story no cliffhangers and HEA at end.

This book has so many amazing characters and story points, I’m going to have to work at describing it fairly. Even if you haven’t read the prior books in the series you will be able to enjoy this one. If you do decide to read the others, it will just enrich your experience.
This is Sands and Lita’s story that takes place on a combined mission to return the Boore to their home planet, to look for Sci’s missing brother and to eliminate Fynbar and his cyborg army.
The Boore species was found in the last book and have red eyes, are animal-like and have no verbal language. The female Boore is actually the one who almost killed Yon in the last book because she is so dangerous. She has to be since her species require she protect herself. Nilly, as Lita names her, is one of my favorite characters. Even though she can’t speak, the doctor has equipped her with a translator so she can understand them. She is always trying to protect females and I sure hope she has her own book in the future with the ability to eventually speak.
Fynbar is the Numan who changed Sands into a cyborg. His cyborg army is comprised of kidnapped victims from all over space. Sands is freed from Fynbar’s control because of Sci’s brother’s telepathic powers which made him a member of the primary crew. The confrontation with Fynbar just starts at the end of this book and is more of a connector for the next story than anything else.
Back to the main characters. Sands is the chief engineer for the crew and Lita is another engineer on his team. Both Sands and Lita have secrets that will play out in the book which were so interesting. Sands is a Grach whose kiss is addicting for his partners. His time with Fynbar also leaves him with a problem that impacts his relationship with Lita. Lita is more than everyone knows. She has a gremlin side to her which males her such a great engineer and a great character. She has such a big heart with room for Sands as well as a deep friendship with Nilly.
There are strong characters in this book as well as lots of action. We get to catch up with the other members of the crew as well as meet kinglings who are a new dragon shifter species I hope to hear more about.
