Lady Philippa Marbury is . . . odd
The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She’s looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest—fourteen days to … rest—fourteen days to research the exciting parts of life. It’s not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London’s darker corners.
She needs . . . a Scoundrel
She needs Cross, the clever, controlled partner in London’s most exclusive gaming hell, with a carefully crafted reputation for wickedness. But reputations often hide the darkest secrets, and when the unconventional Pippa boldly propositions him, seeking science without emotion, she threatens all he works to protect. He is tempted to give Pippa precisely what she wants . . . but the scoundrel is more than he seems, and it will take every ounce of his willpower to resist giving the lady more than she ever imagined.

I discovered this book through BookBub offer. As it is #2 in a series, I go the 1st book and couldn’t wait to read this one. I am now on #3 and have #4 waiting. So good.
Great characters. This was my favorite in the series. It you haven’t read this series, it is a must.
Read this in 2017 when it came out. Never disappointed by MacLean. I don’t care what she writes it’s all well worth it.
Pretty Good In Spite of The Weak Premise
As suspected, I had to set aside the premise and focus on the love story itself to enjoy this book. So many of the situations just weren’t believable – starting with Pippa’s rationalization for her quest. Then there was all the back and forth between Pippa and Cross as she struggled to get answers. Pippa …
I have enjoyed everything I’ve read by Sarah Maclean, but Cross and Pippa tugged at every heartstring I have.
I loved Cross especially when he’s unsettled.
I love everything Sarah Maclean writes. I love her characters, the dialogue and her plots.
I LOVE Pippa. She knows she’s different/odd and has accepted that she will not experience the romantic love that her sisters have found. She is bright and curious. She wants to have kids when she marries and asks to be “ruined”.
As always, Sarah MacLean’s dialogue is stellar, her characters unique, and her setting stray from the typical regency norms. Highly entertaining with an immensely satisfying conclusion.
I’m really enjoying this series. I’m reading her books in paperback just to change it up and not reading something on my iPad. I can’t wait for the next two books in this series to get here tomorrow. I read over half of this book just last night, I’m finished it up today. I’m glad I found her books.
I love all MacLean’s books, but this is my favorite to date!
I think this my favorite of the series.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first book in the series.
I did find Pippa’s oddities very endearing (and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if her character was a nod to another of my favorite fictional scientists, Sheldon Cooper). Pippa was a very unique character, especially for a historical romance novel. I enjoyed seeing her stoic and …
I absolutely LOVE this whole series. Everyone is witty, fun, and lovely. I cannot speak highly enough about this cast of characters.
Great second installment of series.
