Arla Baker is in the most harrowing, complex case of her career…
Detective Baker is called to the scene of a murder in the common. A young woman’s body lies with her abdomen slashed open. She was a promising young student, and the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The well connected family want answers, but the deeper Arla delves, the more twisted the secrets of the past become…
Soon, another woman is found dead in her bedroom, killed in the same way. Her family are also wealthy, and the similarity between the two cases are striking.
Arla know she’s dealing with a vicious, cold hearted killer, one who is out to make a name for himself. He stays one step ahead of Arla and her team. He taunts and teases them, eager for more blood.
His hunger for publicity grips London city with panic. This killer wants to be on TV, radio and online. He broadcasts his murders on the web. He plays with the media like a pro.
Arla’s own personal life is in the spotlight. Her relationship with her colleague, Inspector Harry Mehta is on the ropes. As her relationship spins out of control, Arla discovers something that will transform her whole life. It will push her to the brink, because suddenly she’s become the new target of the killer.
When the one friend she trusted betrays her, things become desperate. But the killer is getting closer, and no matter what Arla does, he will not be distracted…
There’s no one left to help her. Her back is well and truly against the wall.

Will she succeed?

This fifth book in the Arla Baker series is the first one I have read. It can be read as a stand alone with no problem. Chief Detective Inspector Arla Baker is a strong heroine, likable and admired, tenacious yet compassionate. Her partner and lover Harry is cool. He prefers to drive his BMW instead of police cars. They begin the investigation the death of a medical student, the daughter of a wealthy influential man, handicapped by being told they cannot interview him. At first they seem to hit dead ends but then the clues start falling together. This is a very convoluted serial killer case with an abundance of possible suspects but little evidence. Arla and Harry manage to piece things together and get the bad guy or guys in the end. You will be surprised. I received an ARC of this book from the author but I willingly left this review. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the style of writing. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
I didn’t know this was book five of a series. It seems to stand alone so I had no trouble following the story. I thought it was a good mystery, kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed it and will look for more in the series.
Thanks to the author for the early copy
This is another in the DCI Arla Baker series. A medical student is found nude and posed after being stabbed. As Arla and her partner Harry investigate this murder, other bodies are found stabbed in a similar matter. The killer also targets pregnant unmarried women. This novel will keep you guessing.
It leads to an exciting conclusion. A page turner and a thriller.
The Last Girl by M.L. Rose is the 5th book in the Detective Arla Baker Series. This is the first book I have read in this series and the first book written by this author, it can very well be read as a standalone. M.L. Rose wrote an exciting keep you at the edge of your seat story which drew me right in, making me forget everything else and did not let me go until I turned the last page. This book was very well written, the characters well developed and believable. There were so many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. The author writes descriptions that were so vivid that you can actually see yourself in the book. I really enjoyed this book and I am now a Detective Arla Baker Fan and I am going to go back and read the other books in this series. Thank you to the author ML Rose and Book Funnel for my Advanced Review Copy. All opinions are my own.
I received a ARC of the book from Book funnel for a honest review. Although this was the fifth book in the series this was the first one that I had read, and in my opinion it certainly could be read as a stand alone book. I never felt like i didnt understand the main characters in the storyline. Overall I felt the book was very well written, and action-packed. Once I was able to get started reading the book, I had a hard time putting the book down, I would definitely recommend this book to others.
The Last Girl, the 5th in the Detective Arla Baker Series, is a well-written, descriptive, police procedural. The twists and turns in this fast-paced story will keep you guessing throughout the novel and the outcome will not disappoint. If you enjoy British mysteries, you will love this book.
I received a free copy of this book and choose to review it voluntarily.
A fast-paced crime thriller!
Could not put this book down! Definitely want to read the other books in this series. This is a well-written crime thriller with well-developed characters. Enough twists to satisfy any reader and the suspense carried through right up to the very end. The back-story is titillating without revealing any identities.
Riveting and suspenseful…
This captivating mystery is the 5th book in the series of Detective Arla Baker stories but is the first one I have read. Having said that, I want to alleviate any concern readers may have about starting with this story. This book can absolutely be read as a standalone. I never felt lost by not having read the previous installments. There were pieces of Arla’s life story that are briefly mentioned which I would have liked to know more about (and which will absolutely ensure that I go back and read all the previous books) but that did not detract from my complete enjoyment of this story. As the story unfolds and the bodies pile up, the number of suspects increases and the tension builds, compelling you to keep turning pages until you reach the satisfying conclusion of the book. The depiction of human vulnerabilities (addiction, greed, mental instability…) are believable and persuasive in drawing you into the convoluted plot. The characters are well-developed and convincing in the roles they play. Any fan of police procedurals or of murder mysteries, would, in my opinion, be thoroughly entertained by this amazing story. Buy it or borrow it, but just be sure to read it.
I was gifted an advance copy of this book by the author (but it was so good I had to purchase a copy to start my Arla Baker collection) and I am voluntarily leaving this honest and unbiased review.
If you find this review helpful, thank you for so indicating.
