Tired of the smoke, the smog, and the spoiled females of London, Frederick Hawkins leaves the city behind and purchases an estate in Cornwall, hoping to escape his mother’s meddling-and to find a wife worthy of his devotion. When he happens upon a barefooted lady asleep on the beach and rescues her from the incoming tide, he hopes to have found such a woman. But first impressions can’t be … trusted. Born into wealth, Sophia Rosewall is offered everything on a silver platter. That is, until her father reveals he has lost their fortune and can now no longer fund their affluent living. Even worse, the intriguing gentleman who’d rescued Sophia on the beach is no one else but the pretentious man now taking possession of her home. Uprooted from everything she has ever known, Sophia relocates to Lowena, a small cottage at the edge of the sea. She clings to her former life, but when Society rejects her, life will never be the same.As their paths continually cross, Frederick begins to see glimmers of the carefree Sophia he’d first seen on the beach, and he cannot help but hope that there is more to the woman than a love of wealth and attention. But only Sophia can stop attempting to change her circumstances, and instead, change her heart.

I liked that the protagonist female is imperfect, and comes to recognize her shallowness as part of the progression of her character. Also points up some of the stark reality of life for miners of the time (skims over it but doesn’t ignore it either.)
Pride and Prejudice was on my mind as I had recently watched it and this struck me as having some of the same elements, but instead of just assuming wrongly about another, the heroine had to do some changing of character. The self examination the heroine went through felt real and genuine.
I was all over the place on my feelings for the h. I started out liking her and then BAM my opinion of her went to the toilet. Granted you realize this is how she was raised. She didn’t think of how her action, or non actions effected those below her station.
You slowly see the transformation in the h and you could see a future for her. The H didn’t want a wife who didn’t think of others first. This made for an interesting story because the h couldn’t believe how the H went from admiring her to being disgusted by her.
This is a clean story with only a few kisses near the end. I wanted more in the epilogue as far as to how her transformation held. Did she help the miner’s and their families. Was her miner friend at the wedding? What did their future hold for the community? None of this was explained and it should have been.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, bumpy road to HEA, romance and no spice. (ljb)

I truly enjoyed this book. I loved seeing the spoiled main character grow through adversity and become kinder, less selfish and happier.
Enjoyed this book. Sophia had to face many changes/upsets on her road to a happily ever after. She became a better person because of those changes/upsets. Looking forward to the next book by the author.
This sweet romance provided the perfect seaside escape. The shores of Cornwall were a lovely setting, and I enjoyed the characters’ love story.
Sophia was a self centered brat at the beginning, and some of her behavior was absolutely cringe worthy. However, it was clear she was the product of her upbringing. That combined with the manner in which she learned of her reduced circumstances allowed her to still be a sympathetic character, and happily there was a lot of character growth.
I had not read the previous stories in this series, but this definitely worked as a standalone. That said, I enjoyed this so much that I’ve now purchased the first book, and I have the third book which I can’t wait to read to learn more about Gwynna.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys sweet romance, especially if they like stories set by the shore.
For the Lady of Lowena is another fantastic clean romance by author Deborah M. Hathaway. I really enjoyed the way the author developed Sophia’s character throughout the novel and felt like her journey was very realistic. Mr. Hawkins is such a great hero, so kind and I love that even with his cautions towards Sophia, he still gave her a chance and saw the way she was changing for the better. The chemistry is wonderful and I appreciate that I was able to feel the “feels” while the novel remained clean and wholesome. This plot was fresh and original. Great romance!
Deborah M Hathaway writes a wonderful tale that hooked me from the start and kept me turning the pages. With superb writing and a lot of heart, this book absorbed me completely.
The scenes are so vividly detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that makes you feel like you are one with the story. Her amazing imagery allows you to see and feel with the characters feel.
Remarkable emotions, and unforgettable characters. The characters are authentic, imaginable with depth and personalities that’s easily relatable.
This is a beautiful story of change and transformation in personal growth. I loved how Sophia grew into the wonderful woman she was meant to be and how in turn Frederick also grow. I loved the sweet romance that resulted from their relationship.
Deborah always delivers amazing stories that touch your heart. You can’t help but love this inspiring story. It’s a must read! Thank you so much Deborah for such an inspiring story and lovely romance!
Through trials and time spent together, the main characters find things to admire in each other but also things that don’t. Thankfully they take time to understand each other beyond the surface. I enjoyed the author’s descriptions of Cornwall and the beach

I remember Frederick Hawkins from the novella and I’m glad he was given his own story. I didn’t like Sophia Rosewall at first. She was selfish, self-centered, and at times cruel. Even after her family loses everything, she still thinks herself well above their remaining help and thinks about ways to make her life easier but their lives harder. She also believes she is undeserving of her circumstances and tries to weasel her way out of them. It wasn’t until she realized that many in her previous social class had turned their back on her that she came to appreciate the working class she now lives among. Frederick wasn’t perfect either. He didn’t like the way Sophia treated others, but he was kind of cruel to her in return. There were plenty of twists and turns and secrets revealed in this historical romance. I enjoyed catching up with the characters from the previous books.
This author always has good dialogue and flow of story. I find I can get immersed into the story with the details of the surrondings and the desciptive writing. I enjoyed reading the perspective of the h. I was happy he got his own story. Now, I hope the Lt. from the last book will get his! The love story didn’t feel contrived. I felt the characters growth and interactions believable. I wouldn’t have minded if this book was even longer. Already anticipating book #3. I hope there is one.
This is a very gentle love story, but to me, it was more of a story of personal growth. Sophia is a young woman of both wealth and beauty, she sees herself as perfect deserving all the attention being a social butterfly was her entire life with one exception she loved the beach. When she finds herself in a small cottage in need of repairs after her father’s business failure she blames everyone but her father and herself for always having to have more and more, the person she has blamed the most is Frederick Hawkins, the young man who purchased her family’s home. The author has described Cornwall so that you can see it in your mind like it was your own memory her way with words truly made this book enjoyable.
This was another great read by Deborah. Sophia had some growing up to do, but she managed to do it just fine. Frederick needed to adjust his view a tad, too, and managed to do that, too, so that we got the happy ending we wanted. You could read this as a standalone, and not miss anything, but I think you’d rather read it in order, as people from the earlier books are mentioned again in this one.
Such a wonderful sweet romance! So beautifully written! I loved the characters, the way they changed and grew and forgave. I loved the clean love story and the happy ending. It was also fun to read glimpses of characters from the previous books in the series. Great story overall! I recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions are my own and are expressed voluntarily.
