Something so dark, that every living being is horrified of it. Something that feeds on suffering and violence.
But humans aren’t alone in this existential fight. Unexpected allies emerge from the shadows and in the final stand, the nameless stranger will decide humanities fate.

Amazing book. Can’t wait for the next one
I love to read in different genres because it makes the reading experience much more intense and brings variety to my reader hungry mind This scifi-
fantasy-postapocaliptic story is definitely something for everyone’s mind. This unbelievable gripping and creepy-exciting story, is really an amazing read. The dystopian world is so unique and interesting described, you just don’t want to stop reading. I’m not a scifi expert, but I’ve read some of books in this genre and I’ve never read so unbelievable realistic and detailed described book. You really can see the whole scenes like you are living it. I would like to see this book in the cinema on a big screen, because the writing style is like a movie. There are so many different characters and individuals in this story you are completely overwhelmed.
They all communicate with the reader at the same time. No, not from chapter to chapter, but I mean constant.
I needed some pages to acclimate to the totally crazy and very creative apocalyptic world and writing style, but afterwards the story didn’t want to let me go.
You’ve all the creatures that are usually in 10 different books in this one story.
Humans, vampires, mutants, cyborgs, dark characters and mystical beings.
All in one place.
This book is unbelievable gripping and terrible creepy at the same time.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I’m really curious about the future of Los Angeles’s last free zone.
This one was a page turner. So much going on and the story was fast paced. There were many characters and they had their own side story going on at the same time. Jean and Louis – sister/brother, Colton – unknown, Eric – vampire, Bombshell – cyborg, and Vincent – well you have to read the book to see what he is. I was really surprised by how quickly the read went and disappointed when it did end. Need more by this author.
An iconic city in ruins, a man with no past, entities from out of humanity’s nightmares… Do I have your attention?
Shadow City is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel written by indie author Anna Mocikat. This tale features a rich cast of characters in a world filled with detail and nuance. Told from multiple points of view, the reader will soon realise that even in a world this dark, there is still plenty of grey to go around.
It begins with a man with no past who is saved by two scavengers. Readers are quickly introduced to a dystopian society held together by an uneasy alliance facing an enemy only known as the Dark Ones. The characters’ fates are complex and intertwined, leaving the reader guessing as to what will happen until the very end.
If you are looking for a unique take on the struggle of good versus evil, this book is for you. You will be rewarded with a satisfying ending that will have you yearning for more. Fortunately, the sequel, Dark City, is already available! So, what are you waiting for?
I was engrossed in this book.
It strikes many themes that I have in my own book, but explores them in different ways. I was fascinated to see where Anna went with this.
But while that may have been my initial hook, I was quickly along for the ride. It’s got a nice sense of mystery about it, and the different characters and different factions lead to an interesting world of shades of grey.
Nothing is black and white.
Vampires turning against Vampires, humans against humans. Throw in mutants, shadowy villains and a couple of mystery characters and it keeps you intrigued till the end and ready for book 2!
I found myself irresistibly drawn to the more complex characters (for me at least) or Eurydice, Eric and Bombshell. But the whole cast is well drawn and interesting.
If you’re looking for a futuristic, post-apocalyptic page-turner, with excellent world building and lots of interesting characters of all stripes — good, bad, in between — then I highly recommend Shadow City! The first in a series, this is a great set-up for the next two books.
Shadow City by Anna Mocikat is a different kind of dystopian future. It has a bit of sci-fi and fantasy mixed together. There is my favorite character, a cyborg that is a woman in a machine body. There are mutant creatures, vampires, and Dark Ones that come from some other place. The world has been destroyed but no one alive knows what happened. They call it the Glitch. This story is about a settlement of humans and a group of vampires that help protect the humans from danger. There are evil bands of humans too. One man is new, he doesn’t know who he is but he is a hero already to the people. The vampires checked his thoughts and ok’d him. But the mystery is who is he? Another mystery is that of a Being taking charge of a dead body. No one knows it’s not their friend they thought was dead. Who is he? It is very exciting and mysterious! The only thing I had trouble with was the jump between points of view. No warning or change of chapter. Oh well, I enjoyed it and starting the next book I got from NetGalley!
It took me a few to get into this book, but when I did…wow! So much excitement! My kindle hasn’t left my side for the past few days, just so I could finish it. Loved the mysterious cover. (Unlike some, I do get why that woman is on the cover.) I’m anxious to see what happens next with Eurydice, Vincent, Colton & all the others. I preordered the next book in the series as soon as I finished reading this one. Super impatient here… I want to read the next one. I can see this being the next great series, like Walking Dead. I’m sure it would be right up there, too! Great book! Painted vivid pictures of the ruined Los Angeles, plus all the strange creatures that are introduced in this book. Tense, suspenseful, exciting, touching…altogether a great read!
An interesting read from a dystopian/post-apocalyptic world, with a diverse cast of characters. Bombshell is the bomb! I mean I like her a lot! Interesting to see this continue…

Shadow City is a gripping story set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, several decades after the Glitch. No one truly knows what the Glitch was, but due to a cataclysm that released toxic radiation, the world was damaged beyond repair. The dystopian world Anna created gives off a mixture of Mad Max and Resident Evil vibes.
“We don’t know exactly. We can only speculate. It came out of the blue, surprised us in our sleep. Probably a nuclear disaster that started a chain reaction… but as I said, it’s unclear. All government and communications structures were gone, there was no one to tell us what had happened, and there was no help. We were left on our own.”
After the Glitch, “endless thick clouds” hid the sun from the world and life went on in the shadow. That allowed vampires to come out once daylight was no longer a deterrent. Hard to believe but they’re the good guys in this story; most of them anyway. The few humans who survived the Glitch made a pact with the vampires. They live together in a protected area they call The Zone and have a blood bank set up where every healthy person above 12 years old has to donate blood for vampires.
In exchange, the vampires protect the Zone from monsters: radioactive mutants, gangs of raiders, and Dark Ones – mysterious beings that feed on human pain and agony and got here through a crack in the earth at LA s City Hall.
We experience the story from multiple POVs. Eric, the brooding vampire leader, Bombshell the cyborg (that Eric affectionately calls Bombie or tin can), Colton who has no memory of his past or his name (he was named Colton after the street he was found on) and Vincent who is possessed by another being and falls for a rogue vampire. That’s quite a team!

Shadow City by Anna Mocikat
Definitely a lot of action here. I enjoyed the world building – I felt like I was in the story. Some of the transitions of the paragraphs to explain the backstory were rough. The out of left field instalove did not fit the vibe at all, but I could have liked it if handled differently. Lots of different characters and seeing both sides of the rivalry was a plus. Overall, it could play out as a mindless action movie, but as a book it lacked substance. It was fun and original, earning 3 stars from me.
A powerful, intense, dark, Sci-Fi read.
A Sci-Fi novel that will give you goosebumps, elevated heartbeat, and endless curiousity.
Anna’s writing style gives you in-depth experience of the situation which along with fast pacing of the book makes the reader forget about real world to explore the world created by Anna.
The characters are strongly developed and the author keeps you looking for more about the characters.
The unanswered mysteries are making me imagine thousand answers but it is so hard to guess. Cannot wait for the other two books in trilogy to quench my curiosity. .
I would recommend this book to lovers of horror, sci-fi, thriller. Make sure to grab a copy to indulge yourself in a dark world. I would give this book 5 stars for the moments when it stopped my breath.
