The fleet is ready for war. Now we just need some crews… Success will require all our cunning and guile, pushing each of our unique skills to the limit.
It won’t be easy, but what else is new?
Worse still, Provost Adra is closing in. She knows how to find us, and is lying in wait, ready to spring her trap. She’ll stop at nothing to destroy my crew and keep her secret safe. Even if it means ending her career.
The stakes have never been higher, on both sides. Failure means death. Success means war.
I wish there were better options, but come what may the Hedalt are in for one hell of a fight.

Jumping right into the action, this installment raises the stakes yet again while moving all the pieces and changing the playing board. Characters on both sides pushing themselves in this race for survival find help in unexpected places and unforeseen challenges. Lest you think this is all serious space battles, rest assured, the book was peppered throughout with the author’s dry humor. I was going to post my favorite line, but spoiler!
More information about the Hedalt, the simulants, and the remaining humans was revealed, but it feels like there is still a big reveal coming. Actually, much of this book felt like a build up for the final show down. I’ve got my guesses, and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
This is book 3 of 4 in the series. There is some background information provided, but more just enough to jog the reader’s memory. This series is a story that builds and the books are best enjoyed in order.
“No-one comes in peace. Every being in the galaxy wants something, and is willing to take it by force…”
I’m liking this series more and more through each new instalment. It’s more fascinating, a cat and mouse chase, suspenseful and exciting. The Simulant concept-an android with a human’s brain-is both thrilling and daunting, especially for what it was created by the temible and warrior alien species. The storyline told from different points of view-both human and alien-is gratifying and fulfilling. It has been a rollercoaster ride, fast paced, exciting and thrilling, along with a large cast of well-developed, believable characters, giving each clash of fleets an exciting turn. The Contingency 1 crew is fantastic, fun and resilient. The last of humanity’s survivors have come a long way to finally re-conquer what is rightfully theirs, planet Earth, and to “wake” the rest of the Simulants. Onto Earth’s Last War #4 now!
This is a well written action packed story that pulled me in immediately and refused to let go all off the way through the book. Incredible character development and storyline make this a great choice.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Rise of Nimrod Fleet is the third book in G.J. Ogden’s Contingency War series. In this installment Captain Taylor Ray, Casey Valera, Lieutenant Sarah Sonner, and Junior Lieutenant James Sonner aim to get the rest of humanity to fight against the Hedalt Empire. Meanwhile Provost Adra and Adjutant Lux aim to stop them and eradicate the last remaining remnants of humanity.
The twist in the beginning of the book is obvious to anyone who has read or watched science fiction in their life. But it is enjoyable as it both gives the book an opening action sequence as well as showing us how the characters are currently doing.
I was surprised by how much I cared for Lux in this book. There is one pivotal scene involving him that I was more emotional than I expected it to be. Even more surprising is how much Adra ended up caring for him by the end.
The book did expand the Hedalt Empire beyond just the military. This gives a much more three dimensional look at Hedalt society. For the first two books the species was shown to fully loathe humanity and it is good to be given a more nuanced look.
Throughout the series Taylor has been learning about his new powers. Limiting them this time around is the fact Adra is watching for him. This ends up making every time he uses them pulse pounding. He also continues to encounter a Satomi Rose which I’m beginning to think isn’t her real name. Though I’ve been wrong about my crazy fantheories before.
I would recommend this book to those who have read the first two books in the Contingency War series as well as science fiction fans.
