Absolutely wonderful ending to the Lymond series. Nowhere does this series of books flag in its brilliance, as many series do. Highly recommended, and one to read again, as it’s rich and complex enough to merit a second reading.
I’ve read the entire Lymond Chronicles twice and plan to read them again. Dorothy Dunnett’s series is rich with history and phenomenally elaborate plotting, while Lymond and Philippa are characters who live on for me years and even decades later.
I love Dame Dorothy Dunnett’s two chronicle series! It takes a little time to adjust to the style of writing, but stay with it and you will be amply rewarded! Start with the first book in each series. Our book club began with “The Game of Kings” and after reading it, I ordered the entire series in paperback. I loaned the first book out to many …

The sixth and final book in Dorothy Dunnett’s incredible series, The Lymond Chronicles. I’ve reread the series three times now, and I’m still in awe!

Mrs. Dunnett’s complex characters, convoluted plots and adroit usage of other languages in addition to English compels the reader to sit up and pay attention, to engage the mind as well as the heart, and to look deeper into a casual understanding …
The culmination of the Lymond Chronicles, this book is perhaps too jam-packed with everything that makes Francis Crawford a frustrating hero that one can’t help loving. His arrogance, his self-loathing, his brilliance, his self-destructive tendencies, his passion, his nobility, his wit, his sarcasm – all of it is in full display in Dunnett’s …
