When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Or in Charlie’s case, the going just gets tougher. It was enough to make him wonder if his luck would ever change. He should have known better.Charlie had already managed to overcome alien mercenaries in two galaxies, miraculously saving his own neck as well that those of his dear friends. But things were getting complicated, and fast. Very, very … fast. Very, very complicated, in fact.
With their forces in the dark as to the true nature of their enemy, Charlie and his band of rebel pirates and resistance fighters would have to dig deep if they hoped to find a way to overcome the deadly foe. And failure? It would mean a life of slavery if they were lucky, though Death was a far more likely outcome.
But there was another, unexpected player in this game of magic and warfare. More than one, in fact. And as their roles became clear, the entire nature of the battlefield would change. But whether or not they could adapt in time to survive remained to be seen.

This book takes off within a day or two of where the last one took off. Each time I am more amazed at how these characters continue to grow and change. I always find myself so engrossed into Charlie and gang that it is almost disorienting to come back to the real world. I am left wanting more. We are brought right into the middle of a heated battle of magic and tech. That leaves Charlie, Ara, Bawb and the rest scrambling to not only get more help into this universe with them but to get intel as to what is going on and who is behind the whole mess. I keep saying this but don’t start with this book! Go all the way back to the beginning of the authors series called Clockwork Chimera. Read them in order then come to the Dragon Mage series and read them in order. I promise if you like this genre of sci-fi/fantasy you will not be sorry and I think we could have more than a few converts to this genre if you would give it a chance. From book one that I read this author quickly made his way to the top of my favorite authors list right along side Anne McCafffery and that is not easy she has been a favorite of mine for years! Looking forward to whatever is next!

This is number seven in the series, and it’s as fresh and exciting as if it was the first. This is the most complex story to date, I feel. I don’t mean it is confusing or anything like that, I mean ‘complex’ as in multiple big storylines running at the same time.
As usual, Baron gives the reader exactly what they want: an unknown, but very powerful, enemy; a war with the potential for huge costs in human/other beings lives; old and new characters in real danger; and of course, Scott Baron TwistyTwists™ are always included. The reader can also look forward to joining in whilst reading the book, with a raised heartbreat, audible gasps, frogs in the throat, and loud shouts of, “Noooooo!”.
I don’t want to give any of the plot away – and I won’t – but this really, really is a fantastically well thought-out book, as well as being disastrous for Charlie. Come on, I’m not telling you anything you didn’t know already. Remember Murphy and his law? Uh, huh. He’s everyone’s best friend at the moment, and the feeling is definitely not mutual.
This is such an awesome series! I love everything about this and I am thrilled to see there is at least another book! I would just keep reading these forever because the story is so awesome. Seems I cannot get enough. These books keep getting better too! Just jump back to the first book and catch up!
