Love it. European books are just great. I highly recommend all his books.
Dark and thrilling! It is interesting to read about these characters in a new location after the Dolocher series. I loved reading it!
Lord Muc emigrate from Dublin to New York 2 years ago. Since then, he has become the leader of ‘the wild boars’, one of several gangs in 5 points. When the sister of a suspected murderer asks his help to prove her brother innocent, he’s not inclined to do so. But when this brother turns up at his doorstep and gives his version of the events, Muc ‘s convinced of his innocence and hies him as an apprentice rope maker. When the father and uncle of the dead girl abduct him, lord Muc enlists the help of his old friend blacksmith Mullins. At the same time, Muc has bigger fish to fry, as he’s certain that someone is trying to kill him.
Unfortunately, I haven’t read the previous novels about these interesting characters as I’m certain to have liked them. Something more on my TBR list. This was a very entertaining historical crime story. The period is well researched and described in all its squalor, sordidness and poverty. I didn’t guess the real killer until the reveal and didn’t see it coming at all. Well done! Although the killer is revealed, we don’t find out who’s trying to kill Muc (and trying to take over the underworld?). This must be resolved in another story, one I will certainly read!
I received a free ARC from the author, but this is my honest opinion.
What a great story! An Irish sleuth/gang leader and his friend Mullins – 2 men who are big, burly and kind underneath the solid exterior. Their willingness to help solve a murder is like reading about an Irish Sherlock Holmes! Mr. Douglas is an excellent story teller! Fantastic read!
Creepy and twisty!
I have not read the other books that are somewhat of a precursor to this book but I was able to follow along just fine. I have some of the others on my TBR pile and will need to go back and read them. This book has our main character Lord Muc living in 1800’s New York. Will Lord Muc find the murder, save the young innocent from hanging for said murder, and survive himself? A creepy, dark, and twisty mystery.
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
You could read this book without reading the author’s other books as he explains things during the story, but I would suggest reading the Alderman James series of his first. This takes place after a few characters from that series go to America to live, and it will help having the background understanding of them and what they went through in Dublin. This is a great read, and it was wonderful seeing a few of the old characters again and seeing what happened to them in the future. Lord Muc is the main character of this series, and he has more than one mystery on his hand, including a series of murders and another old legend regarding Long Jones. The book reminded me a lot of the Gangs of New York movie, as it takes place around that time frame with the gangs running rampant and fighting everywhere (which Muc loves of course). It is action packed up to the end, and you’ll probably stay up too late at night reading it.
