A witch. A murder. A curse… forbidden ends with a murder.
Called into service for the first time, Brygida must take up her ancestral duty as Reaper of Death and solve the murder within three days. If she brings the murderer to the lake on the third day, the being she serves will be sated. If she fails, Brygida herself will be drawn beneath the murky waters, and the village massacred. There’s only one problem: the main suspect is her charming painter, Kaspian.
As Brygida investigates, the dangers are many and answers few. The village and her family stand against her, and with time running short, the lake demands a price. Brygida believes Kaspian is innocent, but can she stake her life on it, when failure means condemning the rest of the village, and being dragged into the deep…?
Find out what lurks beneath the lake in FEAST OF THE MOTHER, the first entry in a romantic dark fantasy series inspired by Slavic mythology and folklore, sure to please fans of Juliet Marillier’s Blackthorn & Grim series and Naomi Novik’s Uprooted.
Read Feast of the Mother to begin the beautifully haunting adventure today!more
Treat yourself with this book! Admire the quest for justice and be surprised at the killer’s identity.
Two of my favorite authors combined together definately couldn’t pass up reading this! And they didn’t disappoint!
Feast of the Mother had me hooked from the first page on with intrigue and mystery that literally kept me reading from start to finish in one day. The characters were so well written I felt everything Brygida did and then some as I was trying to solve the murder along with her. I can’t wait to see what comes next!
I recommend this book for anyone who likes reading fantasy, mythology, mystery, and romance. You definately will not regret snatching this gem up!
Miranda Honfleur and Nicolette Andrews are two of my favorite authors, so I was delighted to find that they’ve collaborated on a new series, Witch of the Lake, of which Feast of the Mother is Book 1. And what a amazingly fantastic Book 1 it turned out to be. Brygida is a wonderfully crafted lead (Kaspian is a laugh) and I loved the story in this Slavic mythology inspired romantic dark fantasy. It’s truly wrk-written fun filled with well-crafted characters. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
Nicolette and Miranda are both amazing authors, but when combined, the result is out of this world! Feast of the Mother is the first in a new series with great world building and amazing characters. Brygida is coming into herself and learning to trust her gut, even when her mothers are telling her different. Caspian is intriguing… I could feel his emotions as his world was turned up side down. Both characters realize the world is very different than they had believed. I can’t wait to see how the series plays out and watch this budding romance bloom. Awesome job Miranda and Nicolette!
Feast Of The Mother is the first in the Witch Of The Lake series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Brygida starts out so young and naive but tragedies and life quickly bring her out of her shell and you really see her personality became stronger and more self aware. The storyline was really refreshing and original with a surprising and unpredictable ending!! The audio narration was really well done and very fitting. I’m looking forward to more!
A pastoral, idyllic beginning gives way to grief and anguish as a woman is found murdered. Vengeance must be brought on the perpetrator and he must be sacrificed for his deed. The mood changes to horror and disbelief as the supposed murderer can’t believe himself capable of the crime. Intense, engaging writing, very descriptive and evocative. The mystery deepens to an unbearable degree as the murderer throws suspicion on an innocent whom everyone but the Reaper believes to be guilty. Suspense, mystery, horror, murder, rape, and a love that transcends the unanimous belief of who is the murderer. But will it be in time? A very dark but powerful story, this book was hard to put down until the final page.
Miranda Honfleur is my favorite fantasy writer ever since I read the Blade and The Rose.. While waiting for The Dragon King, I was looking for another fantasy read and decided to try this, book 1 of Witch of the lake, written by Miranda and Nicolette Andrews. The beginning of the book is a bit strange. I felt like I had been dropped into a story in the middle. What was this land and who was this woman the story opens with? But soon I found myself caught up in the world ,it’s people and the mystery of the witches, and the lake. Do we really know the people around us? What lengths would parents go to protect their heirs especially if rich and powerful? And can one woman be brave enough to search out the truth even when everyone in the village and her mother is against her. This is the premise that Honfleur and Andrews worked with. Together they have woven a wonderful tapestry of a fairy tale, full of demons in the night, a Reaper that serves to protect women and bring justice to anyone who would harm them, and the love of a charming handsome stranger and a witch whose hereditary job is to serve the Reaper in the lake. What started slow and somewhat confusing became a sunny afternoons delight! Well done!
Brygida lived a very sheltered life. She is an outsider to the village and yet she is the one who must solve the murder. The problem is that her main suspect is someone whom she very much hopes in innocent. This one took me a bit to get into, but I really enjoyed how everything worked in the end.
couldn’t get into it
Miranda Honfleur and Nicolette Andrews are wonderful writers and this collaborative effort is brilliant. The story is colorfully detailed in description. In many cases the description of the village, country folk and feudal like system remind me of Lain Hearns Across the Nightingale Floor. The tale of Feast of the mother takes place in a slavic countryside. It’s a mystery, a coming into one’s own power, following your gut and a love story with feelings of young love but also isolation. Such a intriguing combination all woven together it certainly pulls you in. This is the beginning of a great series.
Amazing book! Can’t wait for the sequels!
Feast Of The Mother is Book 1 in the Witch Of The Lake series. This is a well-written story with excellent world building and character development. These to awesome authors have created a story that draws you into it and you feel the emotions of both Brygida and Kaspian. Brygida is the Reaper of Death and has been given three days to find who committed the murder at the harvest feast. The main suspect is Kaspian, the painter she met at the lake, and who she knows is not the killer. Will Brygida be able to find the real killer in time to save them all? This is a fast-paced, page-turning adventure and one I highly recommend. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Brygida, a witch isolated her whole life from the outside world, now tasked with being a reaper to serve justice for a heinous crime. Kaspian, a soft soul accused by all of taking the life of his bride-to-be, knows he will face the reaper if found guilty yet has no memory of the crime. Brygida fights for his innocence, while everyone else has deemed him guilty. But is he? Will she save him or reap him afterall? This was an excellent, good old-fashioned whodunit, with a wonderful supernatural flair, set in a world sure to give you gosebumps while you are reading. Wonderful ending for a series book. Can’t wait to see what the next one brings!
This is a great way to start a series!! This book has everything, a family of witches who lives in the forest, royalty, a love story just hinting its birth… I loved it and cant wait to continue reading what comes next!!
A wonderfully delightful feast of magic and suspense! I thoroughly enjoyed this new tale of murder, greed, mystery and romance. The characters were entrancing and I can’t wait to read more about them.
