Nobody saw a thing. Or so they say… Baywood police department detective A.L. McKittridge is no stranger to tough cases, but when five-year-old Emma Whitman disappears from her day care, there isn’t a single shred of evidence to go on. Neither the grandmother who dropped her off, nor the teacher whose care she was supposed to be in, can account for the missing child. There are no witnesses. No … witnesses. No trace of where she might have gone. There’s only one thing A.L. and his partner, Rena Morgan, are sure of–somebody is lying.
With the clock ticking, A.L. and Rena are under extreme pressure as they discover their instincts are correct: all is not as it seems. The Whitmans are a family with many secrets, and A.L. and Rena will have to race to untangle a growing web of lies if they’re going to find the thread that leads them to Emma…before it’s too late.

NO ONE SAW (A.L. McKittridge Book #2) by Beverly Long is the latest police procedural thriller featuring Det. A.L. McKittridge and his partner Det. Rena Morgan of the Baywood, Wisconsin. This book can be read as a standalone as far as the crime plot, but I found that I do want to go back to read the first book and catch-up with the main character’s relationships.
Det. A.L. McKittridge is just back from a long deserve vacation and immediately called in by his partner, Det. Rena Morgan about a missing 5-year-old child from her daycare. The grandmother who dropped her off and the daycare teacher of her class both are credible, but the child is still missing with no witnesses. As the town searches and the clock is ticking, A.L. and Rena start at the beginning with everyone involved and the one thing they are sure of is someone is lying.
I really enjoyed A.L. and Rena and all the characters in their lives. They are characters that I definitely want to follow into future books. (I am going back to read book #1 to fill in more of their personal lives that I missed.) The disappearance is every parents’ nightmare and I felt the emotions and revelations of secrets during the investigation is well done. I felt the final twist that solves the crime was deux ex machina which lowered the satisfaction for me. I did feel this was an easy to read thriller with memorable characters that I found entertaining.
I will be following A.L. and Rena on future adventures.
Where is Emma Whitman? Her grandmother dropped her off at day care early one morning. When the parents went to pick her up that afternoon, she was told Emma hadn’t been there that day. The child’s teacher said she never saw her … or the grandmother. There are no witnesses. No trace of where she might have gone.
When Detectives A.L. McKittridge and his partner Rena Morgan are called in to investigate, the one thing they learn is that somebody is lying. But who and why? They also learn that the family of Emma has secrets .. what are they hiding?
Suspenseful from start to finish, the detectives use every resource at their hands to find the missing child. There are plenty of suspects to look at and follow. It’s hard to point a finger at any one person until the surprising unexpected conclusion. Although second in the series, it reads easily as a stand alone. But I do recommend reading them is order. The characters are deftly drawn and the balance of professional and personal bring them to life.
Many thanks to the author / Harlequin / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
3.5 Stars bumped up to 4.
Second in a series, but definitely can be read as a stand alone as I did. This story follow the worst days of a detective’s life. When a child is missing, every second counts. In this story, the child is missing 10 hours before anyone realizes and reports her missing.
A.L. and Rena have a special relationship as partners and friends. They are each other’s work spouse, and that’s rare and unique. I enjoyed this work relationship and how they played off each other…in this missing child situation and in their private dealings. The characters were all well written, and very realistic. Situations are reasonable and thought out. I look forward to reading more from this author, and in this series. Story moves at a quick pace, just as I imagine a detective mind does on a hot case. If you are a fan of detective stories and who done its, I recommend this book!
Thanks to Ms. Long, MIRA/Harlequin and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
No One Saw is the sequel to Ten Days Gone. This one picks up a short time after the events of the first book. It works well as a stand alone book though. I liked this one as much as the first book. I really like this detective duo. There was not as much of a peek into the private lives of the two as there was in the first book. That is something that I missed. Instead it really focused more on the mystery. The solution to the mystery was a surprise. There were a lot of suspects and red herrings, so it was hard to figure out who took Emma. I look forward to reading more mysteries involving these two detectives. I hope one day we find out what A.L stands for.
***I received an ebook copy from the publisher at no cost***
A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan are thrust into another action packed story, this time with a child abduction at the center. A.L. has just returned from a relaxing and much needed vacation with his new lady, Tess, and doesn’t have time to get his bags unpacked before he’s called to investigate the disappearance of a little girl.
This case is troubling for A.L. and Rena because the little girl went missing in broad daylight, yet nobody witnessed the disappearance. Or did they? Didn’t they? There are a ton of unanswered questions that the two detectives set off to find answers to.
I read Ten Days Gone (book 1) and enjoyed these characters, as well as Long’s writing. It was great to get back into a story with these two. I felt like things picked up right where they left off last time, just a few months into the future. Much like the first book, the whole town seems to get involved in the investigation, searching high and low for the little girl and trying to figure out what happened to her. A.L. and Rena are thorough as ever, following every lead and turning over every leaf for answers.
I really enjoy the relationship that A.L. and Rena have. They’re professional partners but you can tell that they’re also friends—like family even— and that they care about one another in that capacity. They engage in banter that comes naturally and is amusing. They work together well and they’re both good and what they do. They’re methodical and seem to know just the right steps to take and people to talk to in order to get the information that they need.
This book is suspenseful and well-written. I felt a whirlwind of emotions while I was reading, which is a testament to Long’s talent. In addition to the investigation, both A.L. and Rena have things happening in their personal lives that demand their attention and energy. Character development was strong and I enjoyed getting to know more of each of these individuals. It was also nice to see A.L. embark on a romance. He’s a detective at heart and his career is his baby, but he also has a soft side and it shined through a lot in this book.
I felt very satisfied after finishing this book. I liked the way Long wrapped things up and I hope that we get to experience more of Baywood and these characters in future books. If you like suspenseful and mysterious novels, this is a good book for you.
Five stars to this novel!
A five-year-old is missing, and no one knew the entire day she hadn’t been in the day care rooms?
How could they not have known Emma was missing when there are sign-in sheets, teachers who loved Emma, and teachers who know she is there every day?
The worst part is that there are no clues to be had.
Someone is lying, but who?
The search continued, everyone’s stories checked out, the mayor was after the police department to work harder, the town was worried about their children, and still every lead turned up empty.
NO ONE SAW is another fast-paced, well done mystery by Ms. Long.
You will be grabbing at every clue along with the detectives and hoping something turns up.
A must read for mystery fans. 5/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good one! A young child goes missing from her daycare, but after reviewing all of the evidence and witnesses, there seems to be no possible way that it could have happened. But it did! It’s not just that someone is telling lies, but that each person has others to back them up, confirming they are being truthful. There are plenty of suspects – the parents, the grandmother, the daycare workers, parents of the other children. But how can everyone have an alibi and yet still the girl disappeared? Now Detective McKittridge and his partner, Rena Morgan, need to sift through everything and everyone to determine what on earth is going on..
They soon find that there was a similar case some years back where another young girl vanished without a trace. Is this new case connected? Or are the detectives chasing down leads leading to nowhere? You will find yourself just as frustrated as the detectives in trying to unravel this mystery. The story really is a page-turner, as there doesn’t seem to be any explanation and you will be dying to figure out who is behind everything and why. Once you do, you won’t be disappointed!
This is the second book of a series, and I hadn’t read the first one – but that’s not a problem. It’s a typical procedural story, with the detectives, their team and the other trained professionals they work alongside. So it’s a familiar framework, and while I didn’t dislike the characters, I can’t say that any of them resonated with me enough that I’d remember specific traits about them in the future. When you read so many of the same type of books, it can be tough to keep them all straight and remember who has done what when you reach the next book in the series. I would keep reading more of these – perhaps I just need more time with the characters for them to leave a lasting impression..
I loved this book! I really enjoy police procedurals and this one with Detective A.L. McKittredge and his partner Rena Morgan is one of the best that I have ever read. The story is a compelling one since five year old Emma is missing from her daycare. Her grandmother insists that she dropped her off with her teacher. Her teacher denies ever seeing her that day. Her mom is late to pick her up, so she is missing all day without anyone’s ever noticing. The clues are there, but there are also the red herrings that kept me guessing. The ending was unpredictable for me which added to my enjoyment of the book and led to the five-star rating. The bonus in the book was learning more about the private lives of the investigators, with details that flowed into the main story line. This is an outstanding police procedural with a fast-paced, relatable plot and characters that were well-developed. By the end of the story, I felt like I knew A.L. and Rena well and I was rooting for them to find the little asthmatic girl before it was too late. This is the second book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. With themes of family drama, lies and lack of communication, I highly recommend this book to fans of gripping police procedurals.

Five year old Emma is missing from her day care. Detectives A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan have been called in to investigate. Time is not their friend at the moment and they must hurry to unravel the mystery and find Emma as quickly as possible.
I am impressed with A.L. and Rena’s deductions. Both are intelligent and take no crap. They navigate all the lies and secrets, which is not easy feat, to uncover the true story!
This story started slow…but then it gradually built into a twisted, wicked tale. I was captivated and just kept trying to guess what actually happened.
Need a good story full of secrets and lies….don’t miss this one!
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
No One Saw is more procedural than thriller, in my opinion, but I do enjoy a good procedural, so I wasn’t disappointed with that at all. The premise is intriguing, and it certainly makes for a suspense builder, so it’s easy to get lost in the pages while trying to suss out the solution. There are a lot of characters introduced during the investigation, so it was a bit much to keep up with at first, but the story is a slow burn suspense, so I feel like there was time to figure out the who’s who of it all. It was nice to revisit AL and Rena, but I would say that this book could stand alone for those unfamiliar with the series. In the end, I think this is a good addition to the series, and I like the main characters well enough that I’ll look forward to whatever is next for them.
I’m a big fan of Detective A.L and his partner Rena, love to following their personal problems, things that makes they’re just a normal person who has problems but still have to give more 100% to solve the case.
And this one is a tough case, a missing five year old girl from her daycare, no witness and it seems like everyone is telling the truth. Yup a complex case for the detectives to find the girl, to find who’s lying, to find who has secrets, and to find who has motives, where time is of the essence, they’re running out of time.
Yes totally love this mystery read, although it’s full of tedious works of cops, but it’s worth it, love when the layer upon layer of truth finally unveiled. Totally recommended for mystery readers.
I read TEN DAYS GONE by this same author and loved it. This is another very good book also. It’s not as intense or as full of thrills but it will grab ahold of you and not let go. It will touch your heart.
A five year old child goes missing from a daycare and everyone in the town is searching. Everyone wants to know how a child can just vanish from plain sight. Who could or would do such a thing. It takes a monster to put parents through such horrors. Though I did guess who did it and with whom except for one out of the three. One was only mentioned near the end so it would have been impossible to guess that. But the other two were pretty much a given in my opinion. But still, this book will keep you turning pages. It will make you want to know for certain and want to know WHY.. Why would anyone do such a thing.
The detectives in this story did a great job. They left no stone unturned. From far and wide they searched. Talked to people of interest. Found people that you would never think of. They worked hard even while going through problems in their personal lives that were hard. I was introduced to them in the first book and now in this one.
This book was well written and had many likable characters. Even the villains were likable although you will despise them in the end. It’s not really an edge of your seat thriller until the ending but still it’s a great story. A mystery to be solved. The descriptions were great and some of the names were ones that will give you a chuckle. You will have to read it to know what I mean there.
I look forward to more by this author. She knows how to weave a story that will have you in tears, holding your breath and praying for a happy ending.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #BeverlyLong, #HARLEQUIN for this ARC. This is my own review. I was in no way compensated for it.
I gave it 4 stars and highly recommend it.
Five-year-old Emma is dropped off at her daycare center and promptly goes missing. No one notices until the end of the day when she isn’t there when her father comes to pick her up.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. Every time I thought I was near to figuring out who took Emma and why another twist would occur and start me guessing again. At some point, I think I suspected pretty much everyone in the story. Some red herrings thrown in. I lost some sleep with this book as I could not put it down.
I have not read the first book in this series, but this book works as a stand-alone. I really liked the interplay between the detective partners A.L. and Rena.
As much as I enjoyed this book, there was one flaw for me that resulted in the four-star rating versus five stars. As the wrap up is given at the end of the book, there were some factors that were suddenly dropped in with no earlier hints. But I still enjoyed the story.
5 year old Emma is discovered missing when her parents come to pick her up from daycare. No one has seen her all day. Detective duo A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan are called in to the case. This was my first book from this author, and I was left with a good feeling about my reading experience when I finished No One Saw.
The book covers the cops investigation of this crime. There are many suspects and sometimes I did find it hard to keep all the names straight. As a reader, there was one point that I thought I had it all figured out, and then it turns out I didn’t, so that kept me engaged in wanting to know what happened to Emma. I thought the crime was well-crafted in this respect. Things get even more complicated with a similar crime happening in a near by town ten years ago. So there are many clues that lead to the kidnappers and many that don’t.
What I liked most about No One Saw is the chemistry between A.L. and his partner. I loved how they worked together to solve the case, and that the author also showed a deep friendship between these two. I want to know more about what happens with both of these characters.
Overall, a well-crafted crime drama, with some romantic overtones. It’s a quick read, I finished it in a day. I will probably be on the lookout for more books in this A.L. McKittridge series.
An ARC was provided by the publisher. This is my honest review.
In the second installment of the series featuring police detective A.L. McKittridge, A.L. just gets back to town after a California vacation with Tess (from Ten Days Gone) when his partner calls to inform him that a five year old child is missing. A.L. heads right over to help.
Turns out that Emma Whitman was dropped off at daycare that morning, but no one in the daycare saw her and she wasn’t their when her parent went to pick her up. So, who’s lying? Did the Grandma drop her off? Did someone see her in the building? How did she disappear? A.L. and Rena will definitely get to the bottom of this mystery. The FBI is involved and no one rests until they can find her, but there’s a lot of lies to wade through to find out what really happened. You’ve got adult children spying on their parents, cheaters, liars, and more all jumbled into a web of deceit. Time’s not on the detectives’ sides and little Emma needs to be found as soon as possible. A tip comes in that sends the duo to a town 100 miles away where a similar kidnapping happened 10 years ago, one that’s never been solved. Are the two related? Possibly.
The reason for the four stars instead of five is simple. I figured it out early on. I knew immediately when one thing was mentioned. This wasn’t like Ten Days Gone, this time the clues were much easier to wade through and the culprit was easily identifiable, as was the reason why. The writing is good, I love the character development, A.L. is a formidable character, as is Rena. I wouldn’t want to be in their crosshairs. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series.
**I received an ARC of this story and this is my honest and voluntary review.
This was a well written police procedural book. This is the second one in the series and it kept me guessing to the end. The two main detectives are very like able and have their own little side stories to add to the mix. I enjoyed the story! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy
This is the second book I’ve read by Beverly Long and I enjoyed this detective duo and it’s fast-paced story. Good story line, leaves you guessing throughout the book. I really like when I can’t figure out who did it right away, and there are numerous suspects that you believe did it. This one I didn’t see coming. Intriguing read and a mixture of interesting characters. No One Saw is the second book in Beverly Long’s A.L. McKittridge series. I enjoyed this book just as much as I did the first one. A wonderful mix of police work and the detective’s personal lives. I think the fact it dealt with a missing child really kept the plot intense for me and I was hooked by the first chapter. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
NO ONE SAW by Beverly Long is an excellent police procedural and the second book in the A.L. McKittridge mystery series set in Wisconsin. The two main characters in the story are Detectives A.L. McKittridge and Rena Morgan. The book starts with A.L. coming back from vacation and getting a call from Rena. A five year old girl is missing from a day care center. Her grandmother dropped her off, but neither she nor the person she was supposedly handed off to can account for the child’s whereabouts. Who is lying? Did the girl wander off on her own? Was the kidnapped? Or did something else happen?
The characters are compelling and felt three-dimensional and very relatable. The reader gets a feeling for both the professional and personal lives of the two main characters without the personal aspect derailing the main focus of the book. The sense of urgency to find the missing child kept me engaged throughout the book. The plot was clever, intense, suspenseful and absorbing. The prose is engaging, fast-paced, and compulsively readable. There are a number of themes running through this novel including kidnapping, family relationships, divorce, lies, communication, a bit of romance, jealousy and much more that isn’t listed due to them being spoilers.
Overall, this series continues to be the best police procedural series that I have read in a long time. The plot was intriguing, suspenseful, ominous and well-paced. I would recommend it to those that enjoy police procedural novels. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Many thanks to Harlequin – Trade Publishing (US & Canada) / Mira and Beverly Long for a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
I read the first book in the series where we were introduced to McKittridge and was excited to see what this author would come up with next. While it does drag a little in the middle it’s still a great read with plenty of dicey as well as frustrating moments as the detectives go through the steps of figuring out where, when and how this all could have happened. Many times you find yourself getting excited thinking everything is solved only to be found wrong. It’s a scary thing when a child turns up missing. It brings to mind too many things for both detectives which they have to get through in order to solve their case. It’s a well written story with plenty of intrigue and a twisted ending which you don’t totally expect.
