A Little Before Its Time
The Prophecy is an action-packed, time-travel romance with wonderful characters and a thrilling main plot.
The Opening
The first chapter is fabulous. The first scene quickly establishes Gwen as a sympathetic and proactive character and is quite the in medias res opening. The second scene introduces her love interest, and there’s no doubt that he is due to the eponymous prophecy.
The Characters
Gwen is an awesome proactive and sympathetic character. She is relatable and interesting. She is a three-dimensional character, but more foreshadowing about her interest in exercise and the martial arts would have been nice before they become relevant to the plot.
Greylen is a little misogynistic but less than is frequently found in similar time travel romances. He is an interesting character with fantastic friendships and family relationships.
Gavin is the most complex and interesting character. He’s the one with a mysterious past and a dark secret. His character development arc is more interesting than any other character.
The Plot
The opening became a bit confusing for me because I didn’t at first realize Gwen’s eyes were completely covered by a bandage. I feel that could have been better reinforced.
The main action plot is fabulous and the final twist is excellent. However, I felt that the resolution came too quickly. The antagonist had invested a lot of time planning his actions and they were well thought out, so I would have expected more difficulty in achieving a final resolution.
The psychological plot continues a little longer and is well constructed. I was happy with the resolution of Gwen’s character arc.
The Setting
The general setting was great. It was easy to see where we were and what was happening. However, I had a few small issues.
My first problem was the introduction of potatoes into fifteenth-century Scotland over a hundred years before the first time any European saw a potato. When they appeared, it disrupted my suspension of disbelief.
The second was the lack of mentioning the use of Gaelic in the first three-quarters of the book. The language first gets mentioned when Gwen begins to use it toward the end of the novel. Her learning of the language isn’t well shown during the story development.
Then I wondered about the electronic music Gwen uses. There is mention of spare batteries, but they appear to have lasted for five years. There was no mention of a solar charger or any other means to charge the batteries. I was also surprised that there was no attempt to reconstruct the twenty-first-century music on their harpsichord.
The Prose
The prose was easy to follow and immersive. It encouraged me to keep turning the pages. However, Gwen’s part in the resolution of the action plot unfolded as a backstory narrated by witnesses rather than being shown to the reader as it happened. This telling version of the action was not satisfying. In fact, it was a little frustrating.
My Opinion
I enjoyed reading The Prophecy and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys time-travel romance novels. Its main action plot is action-packed and interesting, and I particularly liked Gavin’s part in the story.
However, I felt that the resolution to the main action plot was rushed and told rather than shown. There were also implausible elements in terms of the setting. For that reason, I’m going to rate this time-travel romance as 8 out of 10, which will translate to 4 out of 5 on Goodreads and Amazon.
I so enjoyed the story of Gwen and Greylen. It was such a wonderful story that made you laugh and cry. Wonderfully written.
Great story! I really enjoyed it but a few of the details bothered, would an iphone and speaker remain charged for 5 years only using it once a year? I tend to doubt that but am not an expert but things like that bother me where it wouldn’t bother others. But I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters and will try to read other books from Kim Sakwa.
What a story, once I started this book I was not putting it down, a well written time travel story with a very good storyline. This is a Author I have not read before, but I will be looking for more by her. Gwen and Greylen’s story is one I would recommend. I received a Arc of this book through Hidden Gems and I am voluntarily reviewing.
This book had some great sections. The fact that the female character had a cell phone that survived a huge water issue and was used in the 15th century more than impossible to even try to believe.
The ending was also abrupt and not a good lead in for a potential second.
Kim Sakwa is a new author and I think she has a ton of potential. This story had a lot I liked. The characters were interesting, including the secondary characters, there was some steaminess, and the story had some twists and turns along the way. I didn’t like introducing son much modern tech (iPod that never lost its charge) to sports, etc. t seemed odd. Maybe one or two things, but not so much. I liked the whole idea of The Prophecy, predicting Greylen and Gwen’s relationship story. Again, this story was well paced, interesting, and overall a good read. I would like to read more from Kim Sakwa.
I received a copy form Hidden Gems and this is my honest review
This is a time travel book that takes a young, modern Dr into Scotland of long ago. Of course they fall in love instantly as they have dreamed of each other for years according to the prophecy. But it does take some time for her to figure out her place in this time period. This makes for some funny scenes. Just when you think it is all predictable the author throws in some new trial.
I couldn’t put it down didn’t want the story to end
While I enjoyed reading this book, I must say that it was completely historically inaccurate. The conveniences available to the h were nonexistent at that time in history. The way she was treated by the men, the liberties she was given, the respect she received would not have happened for a woman in that society. But, it was still an enjoyable romp with likeable characters.
Time travel books are not my first choice but I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed. The story was well written. I would recommend it.
Really enjoyed this story. Wonderful female lead. I was surprised how she took to his time so easy and just accepted what happened to her. Some of her 21st century talk was funny and they accepted her too easy. Just a little too much sex. Support characters very good. Just surprised how easy the characters accepted the time differences.
Great book
Best time travel book I have ever read!
