In Victorian London, Hester Lynton applies her wits to some baffling mysteries. With her assistant, Ivy Jessop, by her side, Hester travels the country and faces down criminals.
This was a fun collection of short stories to read. It was definitely reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes. The mysteries were original and kept me guessing. It was unusual, but refreshing to have a Victorian lady accepted by all for her wits, and she was well known for her accomplishments.
I found the narrative a little frustrating. I am accustomed to a first person narrative to showing me what the character was seeing. However, with Hester, this does not happen. Detail are kept until the big reveal. It would feel more natural if the story was being relayed by another, like Ivy, who would not know the details until Hester reveals them. Without fail, Ivy would say something like, “I know you dislike to tell your theory this early, but can you give a hint?”
Overall, it was a great read and I look forward to seeing more of this character.
Enjoyable
I liked these stories. They were just the right length, liked the characters, and were just entertaining. Had never read any other book by the author but would now do that.
A lot of typos!! After the first story, her assistant was a cardboard cut-out.
Delightful characters in the style of Sherlock Holmes. This is a summary of her best cases. I had not read this author before but will again.
These stories are easy to read, quick, a bit dated but nothing seriously bad about them.
Fun shorty stories about different cases.
Enjoyed it–will seek out others by same author !
A female Sherlock Holmes sort of plot with good plots and twists enough to make it harder to solve – a history-mystery batch. Clean and entertaining. Liked most but could’ve done with out the spirit talking plot (ghost is nmg).
Takes place in earlier times, which is always interesting to see how things worked
I recommend this book, with some reservations. It was written for the paranormal fan and I enjoyed it in spite of that, but I usually give that category a pass. It is just a matter of personal taste. What pulled me in was the spunky personality of the heroine–I cannot remember her name at the moment–and the humor. The book was predictable, with a rather typical romance novel finish, but the writer pulled me into the story far enough that I finished it. That gives it a three star rating, however I have no interest in reading more by this writer.
Fun ‘Who Dunnit’ short stories.
Female Sherlock and Watson. Very well done.
dON’T LIKE THE WAY SHE NEVER SHARES INFO
I do sympathize with the reviewers who were frustrated by the innumerable typos in the Kindle edition, but these stories are so delightful it’s worth putting up with the careless editing. A properly printed version, sans typos, would deserve 5 stars. Many parallels exist with the Sherlock Holmes stories, of course, but the plots are creative, not derivative. The commentary and attitude of the main character, a Victorian era female private detective, as she narrates the tales, add to the fun of the stories.
