Bestselling author Ashlyn Macnamara, hailed by Jennifer McQuiston as “a born storyteller,” introduces the strapping, audacious outlaws of the Bastard Brotherhood in this enchanting tale of forbidden love between supposedly sworn enemies. Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. She … landless knights. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Now, with her father’s life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands.
Ever since his father’s death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and—by the three gods—it won’t be the last. But after taking one look into Calista’s smoldering gray eyes, Torch discovers a passion nobler than retribution. He will fulfill his destiny and take her from the usurper king, even in his weakened state. For with Calista’s love, no man has ever felt more powerful.

Very good! I’m waiting for the next in the series.
This book combines a medieval setting and all that entails with a sprinkle of fantasy. What a great combination it is. Calista Thorne is destined to be the wife of a King or is she. Along comes Thorne, he captures her father’s castle and Calista as well. It is an action packed storyline, full of intrigue and character danger. It is one of those books that is hard to put down. A very nice read, a bit different from Ashlyn Mac Namara’ s other offerings but very nice indeed.
This is my first read by Ms. Macnamara and I enjoyed the story immensely. The few snippets of the hero Torch’s backstory were intriguing and I was hoping there was more, but I guess as this series develops, the author will reveal more of how he survived his childhood. The romance between Torch and Calista Thorne was believable although in the beginning Torch only claimed her because he thought she was part of his destiny. Calista was a bit of a wild card, stubborn, brave and loving. As an accomplished healer, I was glad to see that she wasn’t a timid little mouse.
The magic comes late in the story as just an introduction of what will/can be. I was a little disappointed that more of that wasn’t explained although I realize that only so many elements can be included in the first book, but the question remains. Is the magic only for a select few or are there others who can ‘see’ into the past? A slight criticism would be there wasn’t much world building-I know there is a king and other powerful lords, but little else.
This is a good first book in an intriguing fantasy. I hope in the next book, the author will explain more about the world, the people and of course Torch. Fans of fantasy romance will enjoy this story.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Start of a series. Not sure I’d be bothered continuing.
Loved it. Read it in three days because i couldn’t put it down.
Not a stand alone, which I hate. However characters were good and juxtaposition of whimsical and midevil setting creates an interesting backdrop for a good plot line.
Had some unique twists and turns! Enjoyable read!
Enjoyed it very much…..
