“Maria Moran’s first inkling of trouble was the coppery taste in her mouth. It came suddenly, a rushing whoosh of something that made her gag, and when she reached to wipe her mouth, her hand came away smeared with blood.”
So begins this thriller about a young intern, Jill Raney, determined to investigate tragedies and terror at a famous fertility and genetic engineering hospital. When two … When two pregnant women die and a fetus is delivered with severe chromosomal abnormalities, Jill’s superiors — including handsome, smitten-with-her resident David Levine — insist there’s no common link.
But her suspicions deepen with the grotesque murder near the hospital of another pregnant woman — her belly drained of amniotic fluid. And when a woman miscarries in the hospital and then disappears, Jill frantically searches for her – following a terrifying path that seems to link all the victims: Is someone playing with life… and the structures of human life itself?
An unforgettable tale of suspense with a shocking denouement, Embryo takes you deep into the mind of malignant genius.

In spite of being told “Don’t step on the wrong toes”, OB intern Jill Raney takes great risks to investigate the suspicious similarities between seemingly unrelated death cases in her hospital: rare pregnancy problems in the pregnant women, rare genetic disorders in their fetuses, and a suspicious coincidence relating to the date of impregnation.
Who is the culprit, experimenting with the creation of life as if he is in possession of the power of God? What makes him treat women’s bodies as discardable containers for that experiment? This book raises ethical questions that linger long after the end.
I have read J.A. Schneider’s later books and truly admire her work. This is her earlier work, and it is interesting for me to see the evolution of creative power. She writes out of intimate knowledge of the subject matter. This medical thriller feels scary and real.
Five stars
A fast-paced, thoroughly captivating, forward-thinking plot full of shocking twists that will keep you guessing, until the end. I’ve definitely found my next medical thriller series addiction!
This book was about a mad scientist who grows a baby in a secret laboratory.
I’ve always thought hospitals were creepy places at night. Who knows what kind of mysterious and unethical things might occur in the bowels of such a huge institution late in the evening with only a skeleton crew on hand?
Author J. A. Schneider has created a suspenseful book that takes full advantage of this setting. This medical thriller is intelligent, fast-paced and features likeable characters in Dr. David Levine and intern Jill Raney.
The book haas left me contemplating genetic modifications and the possibilities of all that could go wrong because of the actions of even a single unethical doctor or researcher.
WARNING: This book should not be read during an overnight hospital stay! LOL I do highly recommend this book. J.A. Schneider never disappoints.
Awesome. It will keep you in suspense until the end.
When the first chapter of a book makes your heart pound and your breath quicken, you know you are in for quite a ride.
There are two main reasons that I read, and I read voraciously. There is no order of importance to these reasons, which are that I read to be informed, and that I read to be entertained. Being informed simply means that I have learned something new, and it’s always a good day when I learn something new. Being entertained means the author has gotten my undivided attention, and has allowed me to become entangled in a world apart from my own. Reading EMBRYO did both.
The scientific community is faced with the age old conundrum of doing something because it can without regard for the consequences. In the case of doctors, perhaps the worst they do is forget their oath to do no harm and plunge ahead without regard for their most vulnerable patients.
EMBRYO is a real page turner. The action is quite nearly non-stop, and just when you think you know what is happening, you find out that you really don’t. Join Dr. Jill Raney in her quest for the truth behind some really horrific obstetric nightmares.
