Fish Out of Water: Book FiveJackson Rivers has always bucked the rules—and bucking the rules of recovery is no exception. Now that he and Ellery are starting their own law firm, there’s no reason he can’t rush into trouble and take the same risks as always, right?Maybe not. Their first case is a doozy, involving porn stars, drug empires, and daddy issues, and their client, Henry Worrall, wants to … their client, Henry Worrall, wants to be an active participant in his own defense. As Henry and Jackson fight the bad guys and each other to find out who dumped the porn star in the trash can, Jackson must reexamine his assumptions that four months of rest and a few good conversations have made him all better inside.
Jackson keeps crashing his bicycle of self-care and a successful relationship, and Ellery wonders what’s going to give out first—Jackson’s health or Ellery’s patience. Jackson’s body hasn’t forgiven him for past crimes. Can Ellery forgive him for his current sins? And can they keep Henry from going to jail for sleeping with the wrong guy at the wrong time?
Being a fish out of water is tough—but if you give a fish a bicycle, how’s he going to swim?

Fish on a Bicycle by Amy Lane was given in exchange for an honest review. With Jackson and Ellery nothing comes easy whether it is a case or in their private lives. This series just keeps getting better and better with each installment. I love the way Jackson and Ellery compliment each other but also love their snark and genuine love for one another. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
I always love Amy’s work.
I highly recommend Fish on a Bicycle! Amy Lane maintains the theme through all he Fish books with Ellery and Jackson fighting for the little guys which I love. The investigation and characters of Fish on a Bicycle are written so that you can enjoy the book without having read any of the previous books or other books it connects with (Johnnies and Racing the Sun). The dynamic characters make it fun to read as they work the investigation and like any other Amy Lane book it will get you directly in the feels. It also sets things up for future books: a new law firm and someone to watch Jackson’s back on investigations. There are definite references to the events in Black John, Hiding the Moon, and the previous Fish books, but I don’t believe you will be lost if you haven’t read them. Of course, I definitely recommend reading them. The ever-evolving relationship and growing closeness between Jackson and Ellery is amazing to read, but it will have even more meaning if you’ve followed them on their journey from the beginning. Jackson’s moment of honest hurt and confusion in the face of Ellery’s anger and their breakthrough to getting Jackson to truly begin to work on his own health is one of those instances where you truly feel the characters are reaching each other. Jackson and Ellery really love each other and their relationship and the relationships they are slowly forging with other people in the face of overwhelming odds makes the book go from a solid investigation romance to absolutely outstanding. Definitely a book I will be rereading often in the future!
It seems like I have been waiting forever for this latest installment in the Fish series! The first thing you need to know about this one is that it ties into both Hiding the Moon (Fish spin-off), and the Johnnies series (especially Dex in Blue, Johnnies book 2). And while you CAN read and enjoy it without having read either of those, you’ll have a greater understanding of the characters backstories if you DO read those first. That being said…
I finished the ARC (advance reader copy) that I started the night I received it, the following morning! I just DID NOT want to put it down! Just as with the previous books of the series, Amy shines in this one as well! OMG! You WILL NOT believe what Ellery does with a gift from his mother at one point in the book! No spoilers from me though! You’ll have to read it to find out! (chuckles evilly)
AND don’t miss the excellent short story that follows! It tells the story of Ellery’s mothers prior visit, which is alluded to in the main book! (Moonfish in the shorts title give you a clue as to who is involved!)

Ellery and Jackson are such darlings! I love their deep connection to each other, how they worry and take care of each other. There are so many intense feelings when they are together mixed with snarky sarcastic humor that make this story an absolute joy for me to read.
This book starts some time after the previous book ended with both Ellery and Jackson on the mend and starting their own firm together. Everything is coming along nicely despite Jackson having trouble dealing with what happened when Carl Lacey kidnapped Ellery. Both men are working on their issues when they get their first case. This time it happens on home turf and takes them into local porn industry, street drug wars and corruption. The case is intense and fast-paced since they are on borrowed time. They have to come together and figure things out before an innocent man is arrested.
Jackson is his usual irreverent sharp self, but he is the one you want to back you up – honest, diligent and persistent. I loved the places and people the investigation took them to. Both Ellery and Jackson found it exhilarating to work together, to uncover the truth and solve puzzles. I enjoyed the heart-to-heart talks they had in the privacy of their home, and the progress Jackson made to let Ellery in and take care of himself. In the end both men made new friends, showed their mettle to the criminal underbelly and the police detectives telling the world they are a force to be reckoned with. I love those two! I enjoyed myself so much! One of my favorite series!
I absolutely love this series !! Ellery and Jackson are awesome together and I definitely see some re-reads in the future. But with all the Johnnie boys appearing in this one… I guess it is time for a Johnnies re-read first !! Especially book 1 and 2, which happen to be on my “deserve 6 stars” list 😉
If you like some mystery and suspense with your romance, some angst but also a lot of laughs and a whole lot of love…then you should definitely give this series a try !!!
Jackson and Ellery do it again! Henry is being framed for a murder of a serious scumbag, and Jackson and Ellery are off to protect the innocent–even if he’s an ass! The action is fast paced and the writing is so fast that you have to back up and read it again occasionally to catch all of the brilliance. Jackson is such a powerful character, and the relationship between him and Ellery will somehow make you jealous of a relationship with a seriously damaged man. In this one, we get cameos from a lot of the Johnnies guys. If you haven’t read Amy’s Johnnies series based on a group of porn stars that have a lot going on in their lives behind the gorgeous bodies, you are missing out!
I don’t understand how Amy can write a relationship with complicated and broken people so compellingly. I ache for Jackson and Ellery as they are working through strengthening their relationship as the chaos swirls around them. Don’t miss this series!
Ellery and Jackson are back with yet another caper. Ellery is opening his law firm and has a case before he gets the doors open. The case is a man accused of killing and dumping an ex pornstar and drug dealer in the dumpster. The case brings us the Johnnies (now I need to go read that series because sexy men and sounds so good the ones I met here) Jackson’s favorite porn stars. But is Jackson well enough to investigate this case after all the stuff from the past few months?
This is book 5 of the series and I do recommend reading it in order. However, Amy Lane does a great job of giving enough of the past books to help you stay caught up and pulling in the new characters and making you want to read that series as well. I love how she titles each chapter mostly with a sentence about fish or sharks!
I really hope we get more Jackson and Ellery soon!
If you like established couples, flawed men, lawyers, PI’s, pornstars and an allover great romantic suspense with a touch of mystery this is for you. Need I say more?
JUST YES! Go buy it. Do you really need to ask?
This is the fifth book in the new Fish out of Water series. It is a MM romantic suspense, PI story. I really loved this book, the characters are so well developed and the pace of this story is superb. Though this book is the fifth in the series, I feel it can be read as a stand-alone book.
I love this series so much I really can’t be rational about it. I just want to roll around in it like a dog in fresh grass. Amy Lane has outdone herself with this cast of characters. Jackson and Ellery, their families, Burton and Ernie and their cadre of misfit toys, the Johnnies boys . . . I love them all. I was so grateful to the author for allowing me to read an advance copy, and I encourage anyone who loves excellent writing, sparkling humor, heart-stopping action, and true love to read this series. May it go on and on and on.
I really, really, REALLY enjoyed this book. The newest installment in the Fish out of Water series brings with it some old friends and some new ones. The mystery wrapped in this story has to do with the Johnnies boys, another great series by Amy Lane.
I love the twists and turns Amy puts into this series. I also love it when she brings in characters from other books. You don’t HAVE to read the Johnnies series for this book, but it does help.
This story brings back a character that really shouldn’t be redeemed from the Johnnies books. I think if you read this book and not the Johnnies books– you’ll feel a tiny bit of sadness for the character.
I’m trying not to put any spoilers in. I just really think you should read this story. It’s another stellar book by Amy Lane.
