It took me most of the summer and part of the fall to finish, but I adored Don Quixote. Lively prose, clever story-telling, and lots of LOLs in a 400-year-old 900-page book. What’s not to like?
4 out of 5 stars to Don Quixote, written around 1605 by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. A few interesting facts: (1) The book was originally written in Spanish, (2) I read an English translation as when I attempted to read the Spanish, between the changes in language over 400 years and my own limitations of the language at the time I read it, (3) …
Don Quixote is considered by some the first main stream fiction story in modern western civilization, and number 1 on many classic literature lists. The story follows Don Quixote, and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, on his adventures to become a Knight Errant, a long lost profession from days long forgotten. It is hard to tell if Don Quixote is …
I will enjoy reading this again and again. This book is a little bit of everything, I am grateful to have read it, finally. I’m not sure if my interpretation of it is accurate or if it will change after another read or ten reads from this first one – I like that in a novel. It’s timeless, in my opinion. The characters and story could be …
The ebook is very difficult to read. links to end notes don’t work, and verse that continues to a second line is only partially shown.
a classic
This is arguably the first novel ever written. It’s alive with humor, unforgettable characters and fantastically fun plotting. We all think we know the story, but how many have actually read it? This translation brings the classic to life and made this reader understand why it’s such a great classic.
A classic everyone should read.
A wonderful translation of classic novel.
I could not get through the first 50 pages…it drags on and on and on…
Written more than 400 years ago, this remarkable novel not only contains two of the most vivid characters in all of literature–the demented but noble Don Quixote and the best sidekick of all time, Sancho Panza–but makes postmodernist metafictions seem almost quaint, beginning with the Prologue. This is where Cervantes confesses he is not the …
Great translation of a true classic.
best novel ever – wonderfully readable translation
One of the best books I have read.
I half read this book well over 40 years ago in High School. I am overwhelmingly thrilled that I decided to try it again. This time I was captured by the characters, the extreme highs and lows of Don Quixote’s travels. A1, be patient and you will fall in love with this book
This is a challenging read full of wit, sarcasm and adventure. It’s worth a reread if you were assigned it years ago in an English class.
Reread it recently. I was a Spanish major in college so I read it in the original Spanish many years ago. It is a classic and will survive through many more generations. It is a must read!!!!
Wonderful translation of the classical masterpiece
