Eve Harding is brutally raped on her way to meet a friend one Saturday morning. Shocked and dazed, she goes home and showers off vital evidence before calling the police. The police aren’t able to catch the guy so Eve, frustrated and disappointed, makes it her life ambition to learn who it was and exact revenge.
I really enjoyed this cat-and-mouse thriller where it was difficult to know who was stalking whom. This book is intense and dark and Eve was a complicated and sympathetic character. Gemma Rogers wrote her very well.
Trigger warning: Graphic description of rape.
Thank you to Gemma Rogers, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Eve Harding, early one morning, is brutally assaulted both physically and sexually. This is every woman’s worst nightmare.
WARNING: This may be a trigger for some women as the rape scene is graphically described.
She makes some mistakes along the way … she finds her way home afterwards where she bathes trying to get his touch, his smell gone. Eventually she does call the police, but she can’t identify the man. He was dressed all in black and wore a mask. Police have nothing to go on and no one is arrested.
Eve wants justice … she wants revenge … all on her own terms. And so starts her own investigation.
In this game of cat and mouse.. who’s stalking who? How far does one go to seek justice?
This gripping fictional tale bounces back and forth in time… rotating between the attacker, the police, and Eve herself. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the plot moving at a fast pace.
Many thanks to the author / Boldwood Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This was a new author for me and even though it was dark and sometimes I was cringing I did enjoy the book, but it has some triggers you may think twice about it, but all that said it was well written and it did keep me on the edge of my seat. So we meet Eve who is brutally raped on her way to visit a friend. She unfortunately showers right after cleaning off all evidence before calling the cops and I know we are thinking noooo but you can understand that at the time she wanted all traces removed, i felt for her. They aren’t able to catch the person so upset she decides she is going to do it and get her revenge.
rcvd an ARc at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
STALKER by Gemma Rogers is a well-written and gritty psychological thriller. The story takes place in London and starts with our protagonist Eve Harding being assaulted and raped while walking to a train station. The police are unable to find her attacker so Eve seeks to find him herself and get her revenge.
This is one of those books where it is hard to know who is the cat and who is the mouse. The atmosphere is palpable. The emotions seem real with hurt, anger, frustration, a feeling of helplessness, and then a need for retribution.
The novel does skip backward and forward in time and personally, I would have liked a straight timeline, but Rogers did a great job with this format as well as switching between Eve, the attacker, and the police at various times. The chapters are well labeled so the reader does not have to guess as to when events are occurring.
Does Eve find her assailant? Does she get her revenge? Or does the attacker determine who she is and come after her again? Will Eve find happiness, prison or death?
I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy psychological thrillers, but bear in mind that the attack is depicted in strong detail. I believe this is an author to watch and I look forward to her next book.

I tend to read romance novels but, every so often, I pick up a thriller, crime or horror story to mix things up a bit. I loved the sound of Stalker and it didn’t disappoint.
When Eve is attacked and raped, her world understandably is turned upside down. But with a very cautious attacker who had left no DNA, the police aren’t getting nowhere but Eve is struggling to return to normality – something which no longer exists for her – and she wants revenge. Can she find him before the police do and what will she do if and when she does?
What I particularly enjoyed about this book is how it is told on two timelines. We start with the brutal attack but then we join Eve several months later and we gradually find out what has unfolded since the attack, making this a real page-turner. I didn’t struggle at all with dotting between the two timelines as they’re really effectively written as well as being clearly signposted.
Another thing I enjoyed was asking myself what I’d do in this situation which surely has to be every woman’s worst nightmare. Would I want vengeance? Would I handle it any differently?
