The Secret Letter by Debbie Rix is a fabulous historical fiction novel that weaves a story between two young women ( Magda who lives in Germany) and Imogene ( who lives in England) during WWII and thereafter.
To read how their lives are intertwined and how strong and brave they were for themselves and for those that were fighting for what is right, was fascinating.
This is a great read with truly like-able, relate-able, and strong women that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Gripping and heartfelt.
5/5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC, and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review.
An amazing, informative book based on factual history. Well-written and readable.
I couldn’t put thi down until I finished. Stayed up past midnight to finish. Don’t miss this one.
First, the cover of The Secret Letter by Debbie Rix is stunning. Second, my mother-in-law was a war bride and spoke of her stories as a Wren during WWII, so I was excited to read the author’s story based on her parents’ experiences during the war. The story Of Imogen and Magda are heartwarming, chilling, and courageous. A few tears were shed during the reading of this book. Their stories will stick with this reader for quite awhile. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for an honest review,
I recommend for those who like historical fiction.
Kept me turning pages!
The Secret Letter tells the tale of two girls on the cusp of womanhood from opposing sides on the brink of war. Imogen Mitchell is a 15-year English girl whose family exiles her to the country when Great Britain declares war on Germany in 1939. For years, Imogen is disconnected from her family both physically and emotionally; her parent’s frequent letters and infrequent visits are her lifeline to her home, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Meanwhile, across the North Sea resides a 13-year old German farm girl named Magda Maier, whose older brother Karl is studying at Oxford University and whose best friend Lotte has been taken away because of her faith.

This is another WWII Historical Fiction book that I would love to give more than 5 stars to. I really enjoyed this book that I read in 2 days’ time. It is a story that goes back and forth between the lives of Imogene, a teen in England, and Magda, a teen farm girl in Germany. The story follows them through the war with their growing up and learning to cope with the horrors of war, meeting people and not knowing who to trust, and the men in their lives. It is heartbreaking at times and is such an overall great read. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this fantastic book that I devoured in record time, because it was such a page turner, in exchange for an honest review.
This was a beautifully written book about the lives, fears, loves and bravery of people during WWII.
The book goes back and forth between, two young women, Magda in Germany and Imogen, in England, and the connections they have throughout the story.
It also follows the people close to them in both places, and shows how a lot of times their thoughts and actions are more similar than not.
This book was fun as it had a different take on the war and the characters through out were so interesting to figure out and follow.
The author drew some of the characters from her own families experiences during the war.
The author has a wonderful writing style and I am now very interesting in reading more of her books. This is a well worth read.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for the Arc of this book.
