A Charming Misfortune is the twelfth book in the A Magical Cures Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. Even with this being the 12th book in this series it can very well be read as a standalone. You don’t have to read each book in order, but I do recommend that you do, it will definitely add to the enjoyment of this series. This story as usual Kappes way is very well written, humorous and with delightful and quirky characters. Kappes always brings the characters to life, they are the type you would love to be friends with. Kappes’s books always draw me in and keeps me turning the pages until the end. With many clues throughout the story you have many suspects to choose from, pay attention and you may figure it out before it is revealed. I of course didn’t’ figure it out until the end. This book as with all of Tonya’s books kept me entertained, amused and giggling the whole time. I loved the surprise ending. Can’t wait for the next book.
June Heal gets herself into another pickle in Whispering Falls when magic, extinct birds, and mystery collide. The local Audubon Society is in town when they discover a rare and nearly extinct bird may be in town. Little do they know, the bird has taken up residence in Petunia’s hair. Now the girls are trying to keep the bird hidden as they don’t know who to trust. When one society members ends up dead, June is on the hunt for the murderer using her special blend of magic. Can she find the culprit? Is someone wanting the bird for its feathers rather than to keep it from going extinct?
If you enjoy a well-crafted cozy mystery with paranormal elements, witches (spiritualists), magic, quirky characters, and great storylines, then you are going to enjoy the Magical Cures Mystery Series. Each book is filled with mystery, intrigue, whimsy, fast-paced action, and loveable characters.
This is the first book I have read in the Magical Cures series, but it certainly won’t be the last! Bird watchers have descended upon the village of Whispering Falls, looking for a rare bird. The writing is skillful, the plot is tight and multi-layered, and the characters are well developed and believable. It was an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to reading more of this author’s work. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
Why is June Heal surrounded by birds, well not literally? June’s crystal ball keeps make bird noises, her cat Mr. Prince Charming gives her a bird charm, an Audubon Group is in town, and her friend, Petunia, shows up with a rare bird in her shop. Petunia wants to keep the bird hidden from the Audubon Group and asks June for help, during their scheme to convince the group they are looking in the wrong place for this bird one of the people in the group dies suspiciously. Can June help her husband, Oscar, which is the town’s Sheriff, solve the death before time runs out?
Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. The mystery had several twists and turns to keep me guessing whodunit, which I didn’t figure out until the big reveal at the end. The characters are quirky and fun, with well-developed relationships. I enjoyed that the storyline included the Audubon Society, I’m not a “birdwatcher” but I do enjoy sitting out in my backyard listening to the birds and other wildlife. At the end of the book, there is something special that is announced that if you are a Magical Cures Mystery fan you won’t want to miss. You don’t have to be a fan already to enjoy this book however, you can still enjoy the story very much like a stand-alone. Although you will probably be a fan of the series and Author Tonya Kappes when you finish the book.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.
I want to live in Whispering Falls!!! Another mystery to solve and this one kept me guessing. June and Oscar make an adorable couple and a great team of investigators. I also want to stay in one of he tree house rooms. Magic is in the air. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy.
The Audubon Society has invaded Whispering Falls in the hopes of sighting the Spangled Smokey Momoko Bird. But not all members are content for just a sighting and unfortunately one of the participants is murdered. June Heal, Oscar her husband and the town officer, along with other Spiritualists in the town work together to find the murderer in this entertaining book. I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.
I loved being back in the magical town of Whispering Falls, Kentucky. I love the characters and the magic of the town.
Bird watchers from the Audubon Society are visiting searching for a rare bird, the Spangled Smoky Momoko.
Once again June, Oscar, Mr. Prince Charming, Madam Torres have their hands full to try and keep Whispering Falls peaceful and safe.
Lots of suspense and surprises.was so involved in this well written story didn’t want to put down until the very end.
I received an ARC prior to publication and decided to voluntarily review it. Opinions expressed are my own.
A group of bird watchers, from the Audubon Bird Watching Society, arrived in Whispering Falls. They have one particular bird in mind, the Spangled Smoky Momoko, a rare bird. As the group disembarks, twin sister ghost whisperers, Constance Karima, and her sister Patience, who own Whispering Falls Funeral home, state they have a customer.
When Petunia pays a visit to June Heal, a homeopathic spiritualist, in her store, a bird pops out of her hair and flies to visit Madame Torres, June’s crystal ball. When some members of the bird watching group show up at A Charming Cure, Paris Rush, is alerted when the bird takes flight from Madame Torres. Paris is sure, she’s actually seen the Spangled Smoky Momoko!
After June’s cat, Mr. Prince Charming, delivers a charm, it only means trouble. The charm meant either June or someone she loved needed protection. June is warned about finding out about the bird before the crow flies at midnight.
June, along with Petunia come up with a plan to try to keep the Spangled Smoky Momoko safe and lead the Audubon Bird Watching group out for camping overnight. Despite all precautions taken, one of the members turns up dead. Now, there’s a killer to be found.
I love visiting June, and the town of Whispering Falls. The town natives all have special and unique gifts, that they keep hidden from the regular folk. Each, of the town natives, is special, but I’m a little partial to Constance and Patience. Their oddness makes them endearing. Wonderful read, and I loved the ending! I recommend this to all paranormal lovers!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book.
This series truly is charming! From page one with the departed souls of teenagers that have come back as fireflies to June’s fairy-god cat Mr. Prince Charming to her crystal ball Madame Torres, the book is filled with whimsy and imagination galore. The story centers around a rare bird, the Spangled Smoky Momoko, which brings a group of folks from the Audoubon Society to Whispering Falls. When one member of the group is murdered, it’s up to June and Oscar to solve the crime. As always with a Tonya Kappes book, just when you think you know who it is (and she does lead you there), then, wham!, off you go in another direction – so much fun!! Oh, and such a sweet surprise at the end!!! 🙂 This series is like a bag of potato chips – you can’t read just one!
I did receive an ARC of this book from the author – however, my review is totally voluntary.
I really enjoyed A charming Misfortune. The book is well written, fun and interesting. I love the characters and the magical town is so interesting. The mystery has many twists that capture our attention and keep us guessing. I love the ending of the book and look forward to more in this series.
A Charming Misfortune is another exciting installment in Kappes’ Magical Cures mystery series. I love this series because it combines magic and mystery together in an entertaining read. I have read several books in this series, and I really enjoyed this latest one. When a bird watching group shows up in Whispering Falls, June finds herself trying to protect the town when one of the members of the group is found dead. June and Oscar have a limited amount of time to solve this mystery so the pressure is on.
Kappes does a great job at setting up a compelling read that captures the reader’s attention from the very beginning. Its been a while since I had read this series so I enjoyed seeing all of my favorite characters back again. This series’ secondary characters really add to the charm and the magic of the stories, and I loved how June and her friends came together to solve this latest mystery. When June’s friend becomes a suspect, the stakes are really raised so I enjoyed seeing how June handled this latest development. Overall A Charming Misfortune proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading June’s next adventure.
Received a copy of A Charming Misfortune from the author in exchange for my honest review.
A Charming Misfortune by Tonya Kappes was a perfect addition to this series. June and Oscar have a case of murder that may or may not involve a group of Audubon Society members who are visiting Whispering Falls searching for a rare bird.
I couldn’t put this book down with it’s quickly paced plot, quirky and lovable characters, and the secrets and lies from the Audubon group members kept me turning the pages. I felt right at home visiting Whispering Falls again and I can hardly wait to go again. The ending was pretty special, too.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own.
June Heal and Oscar Park are husband and wife. June runs a store and Oscar is the town officer. June is trying to prevent a murder in Whispering Falls. She also is trying to figure out what the Audubon Society wants with the Spoandled Smokey Momoko bird. What did June dream in her nightmare? Does she stop a murder from happening? The answers are in the book for you to find. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Another great addition to this magical series. I love the characters and how Oscar approves of June’s powers, because he knows she only uses them when absolutely necessary, and for the right reasons. There were many surprises in this book, and one was a very pleasant surprise. This story is well written, with a lot of suspense that kept me glued to the story. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy.
A charming mystery with delightful, fun, quirky characters in a wonderful setting. Even if you haven’t read all of the books in the series, it was easy to follow who everyone is. Lots of suspects and a good twist at the end. Looking forward to the next book.
Whispering Falls is one fictional town I wish was real so I could go visit it. I want to take a stroll down the street and see the shops and eat a June’s Gem. This is a must read! I love June Heal and company. The characters are quirky and lovable. The writing is outstanding. This was a one sitting read and went by too fast for my liking. It flows well. I LOVE the ending!
You can never go wrong with a book from Tonya. I have not read any of the other books in this series but I didn’t feel lost reading it. That’s the great thing about her books, you can just pick up a book and dive right into a great story. Tonya will give a backstory in each book. After reading a book that I picked up in a series, I always want to go back to read the other ones. This time we are following June and her Magical Village she lives in. What’s not to love about this book, it has a charming village, magical people/animals and a cozy mystery to solve. I like how the magical abilities of June and others help solve this crime. This a quick, fun enjoyable cozy mystery books to read.
*I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
Tonya Kappes does it again with this book. Her books are always fun to read and entertaining.
I read an advanced copy for an honest review.
Whispering Falls is going to the birds! Or it seems that way. The town is currently overrun with birdwatchers from the Audubon Society searching for rare Spangled Smoky Momoko. Mr. Prince Charming has dropped a bird charm off to June and the warning about “The Crow Flies” sets June and the residents of the town in proactive/preventative mode.
Needless to say, that doesn’t stop a murder from happening and Oscar (June’s husband)rushing to solve to case before it has to be turned over to the mortal police.
I loved how Oscar is working with June and allowing her to use her gift to help solve the crime. I loved all the twists in this book. I thought for sure I knew who the killer was, but Tonya Kappas fooled me again, at the end.
You will be “Charmed” by this story and all it’s characters.
