But grief is the last thing that Joe’s daughter Ciara and step-daughter Heidi feel. For they knew the real Joe – the man who was supposed to protect them and did anything but.
As the mourners gather, the police do too, with doubt being cast over whether Joe’s death was due to natural causes. Because the lies that Joe told won’t be taken to the grave after all – and the truth gives his daughters the best possible motive for killing him…
A gripping suspense novel about deadly secrets and lies. The perfect read for fans of Clare Mackintosh.

WOW!! What a twisted story. Two daughters, one biological, both with secrets. One filled with rage and one with sorrow. Clashing with each other. The ending I will leave for you to discover.
Not bad, but not good either. Just felt very meh about the storyline and the characters. Not a book for me.
Great story. Kept my interest to the end. The pain felt by the two main characters was real and believable. The “Liar” character is sleaziness at its best!
Difficult subject matter.
Kind of dragged on…. lots of repetitive angst and some predictability.
I just wanted it to be over….
Somewhat predictable but still page turner
Very gritty, realistic and disturbing
This book is okay if you got it free, but don’t spend your money on it.
It is an ok read.
Got a great feel for each character through the way chapters were written.
Never quite sure who was going to be the culprit.
Read it in two days because I just had to see who did it! Great characters, and believable. Good grief! This guy was unbelievable, but the character was believable. Usually I can figure out the killer within 30 pages. Not this time. Really enjoyed it.
Terrible book, I would not recommend it.
Once I got into the story, the tension kept me wound tight throughout. It’s the tale of two stepsisters dealing with the impending death of an evil bastard of a father, and the family dynamics that made them into the women they grew up to be–complete opposites who express their pain in very different ways.
There is a crime, and I confess I guessed early on who the culprit was (though there was a good twist I didn’t see coming). But that didn’t stop me from rooting for certain characters and wanting to see how it all resolved. Honestly, my heart beat faster, reading some of those scenes. The conclusion made me smile.
Just a little slow for my tastes. An ok read.
Although the characters are not all likable, they are interesting and full of surprises. Seeing the story unfold from different characters, past and present, added interest and kept the plot moving.
Not much…didn’t finish it.
This Book was definitely a 5 rotten tomatoes .
Twisted but positive.
One of the worst I ever read
Meet Heidi, the long-suffering dutiful step-daughter, Ciara, the long-suffering spiteful biological daughter, and Joe McKee, the man who molded both their lives and knows he does not deserve forgiveness for his sins. Joe is dying of cancer. Heidi is caring for him, despite her feelings towards him because it is her duty. Upon his request, she calls Ciara to the bedside and Ciara joins in the caretaking. Joe’s sister joins the vigil. Heidi’s husband, Alex, is in and out of the house. And then, one night, when the five are gathered, Joe dies – not of natural causes, according to the authorities.
Claire Allan takes the classic country house plot and makes it fresh again with her deep exploration of character. It’s an intense read and one I couldn’t turn away from.
The narration is amongst the best I’ve ever heard.
