Be careful what you wish for. You may be in for a spell … from which you can’t escape.Maisie Armstrong wishes desperately to change her life, but when she suddenly finds herself in 1790 Scotland, lying about her identity, betrothed to a cursed laird whose wives die untimely deaths and scrutinized by his dangerously sexy brother, she must do things she never wished for. To escape the ugly gossip … escape the ugly gossip about him, Thane McKendrick plans to leave Scotland forever, as soon as his brother is wed to the beautiful lass just arrived from the Americas. Maisie’s secrets make him suspicious of her motives, protective of the McKendrick mill he planned to leave behind and second-guessing not only the woman meant to marry his brother, but his own salacious thoughts.
Finn, the magical matchmaking elf, has come to eighteenth-century Scotland to find a missing spell book and study the strange energy he sees around humans. If this is love, what is it good for? When he challenges a lovely matchmaker to a contest, he begins to question if he can follow through with the king’s orders and destroy human lives.
Despite the magical matchmaking efforts going on around her, Maisie must not fall in love with Thane. She can’t stay in a century where telling the truth means losing him forever.

Finn, the interfering Elf, reminded me so much of Rumpelstiltskin it just made me smile every time he turned up on a page. This book is, however, much more than a fairy tale. For a start it’s a time-travelling romance, and a really good one at that. Maisie Armstrong is a wonderful character. I loved reading about the virtues that we nowadays would consider ‘old-fashioned.’ And who wouldn’t want to travel back in time to a place where honour was held in high regard? Especially if there was a tall, handsome, complicated laird Thane McKendrick waiting to sweeep you off your feet? This story is told really well, it flows smoothly and held my attention on every page. The theme takes you on a debate as to what really defines love and it’s importance in society in general, rather than just in your own life. Quite thought provoking. If you’re an adult, who like me, still loves a bit of magic, then this is a book you should read.
“We look after our own”
Maisie had devoted eight years of her life to her family. First caring for her invalid mother, and then in doing everything for her father and brother – who were fully capable, just lazy.
But it was no life for her. Not a real life. Though she knew that, and did everything she could to find her happiness; the self-guilt and “promise to her mother” seemed to hold her back. Until she finds herself suddenly catapulted into the past. How does that even happen, she muses.
This book is an interesting outing into time travel and fairies, and includes some minor witchery as well. It doesn’t take the reader long to see where Maisie’s future lies, but can she break free of the dutiful daughter she’s always been?
Clare weaves a magical tale that isn’t so extreme as to be hard to believe. Her characters are likeable, even loveable; you want Maisie to break free and allow herself happiness. You’ll simply adore the mischievous Finn!
And most important, while this was book four of the series, it was a perfect stand-alone read. [Though I will look for the others!] I highly recommend this, even if time travel and fae folk might not be your cup of tea!
I received a free copy of this book from the author, but this review is entirely my own honest opinion.
Magic , fantasy, and time-travel.
This time travel gem was so entertaining Maisie is sent from the present to Scotland in the late 1700. This fantasy has an elf name Finn and I love him and he adds such a fantastic flavor to this romance. The author has done a great job of putting challenges into Maisie life you sometimes wonder if it will all work out. Thane and Gaius brothers were interesting characters. In this one who needs a fairy godmother when you got an elf? This is one you should pick up. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Can I just say WOW! This is a new author to me. I love time travel romance and this one was so fascinating. Poor Maisie goes back in time and she is searching for a way to go back home. Thane is looking to make a match for his poor beleaguered brother so he can leave Scotland for the Americas. Everyone thinks the worst of him and he believes it as well. These two go through so much in this story. I was captivated from the beginning.
I loved all the characters of this story. The fact that the author also wrote this with a dual POV format, is a big plus. There was just so much to keep track of here that getting into the characters’ mind was really important.
I highly recommend this story especially if you love time-travel and fairies.
Masie Armstrong isn’t happy with her life in modern time Boston , upon arriving at subway she runs into a strange man , heard a woman whispering in her ears and Wales up in 18 th century Scotland. While meeting her ancestors she possibly could find love with one of the Mckendrick brothers. Over all good book time travel matchmaking witch and a eleven detective persay.
