Excellent job. Did not figure it out till end. Nice to be stumped every once in a while, lol.
Watching Graham figure things out reminds me of trying to follow Holmes. Like why did he make the comment about someone and they could hear it. Was it a possible trap being set? Let me know your opinion.
You are able to read this book without having read previous books. There are references to previous books. I know that I will try to get some done ( in my other life, lol), so I can understand more of the characters.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
Greg and Tamain are marine biologists tracking the Holden shark! When Greg goes to check the data on the buoy and doesn’t t come back a search begins. When a hurricane hit the island the search is called off! When Greg’s body washes ashore there are too many suspects. With tensions at the docks rising over new fishing laws and I unwanted French fisherman DI Graham has a lot on his plate. When a fisherman named Matt goes out searching for Greg’s boat and doesn’t come home another search begins. There is plenty of mystery and action in this page turner! I like the DI Graham books and this author! I highly recommend this book and this series to any mystery lover!
Of all Ms. Golden’s many series, this is my favorite by far. This entry does not disappoint. A lovely setting, a good mystery.
not as good as previous books in this series
Another awesome book in the Detective Inspector Graham series. This case has plenty of suspects and twists and turns that kept me engrossed from page one. I had the reason/culprit for the murder figured out early on but that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. I loved the epilogue that succinctly tied up all the loose ends. If you enjoy well-written mysteries, then I urge you to read this series by the talented Alison Golden.
If you’ve read a book by Alison Golden you know just how adept she is with the written word. I’m always in awe of her writing and feel like I get my monthly quota of vocabulary words from her books. The Case of the Pretty Lady was a great cozy mystery as are all her books. I felt she brought Inspector Graham out of his sullen somewhat drab life into the “land of the living” making him more three dimensional as he develops a relationship with Laura, the librarian. She also featured Constable Barry Barnwell in this story and gave us a bit more insight to the other characters that work at and with the Gorey Constabulary. This story takes us through a hurricane, the death of a researcher who wants to study and save the Holden sharks, fishing feuds between the English and French, and a poltergeist at Mrs. Taylor’s White House Inn. That and more in this story. Can’t wait till the next!
“The DI works like his life depends on it. I’m amazed he’s found time for a woman.” “Perhaps he works like a dog precisely because there’s nothing else in his life,” Roach interjected. “When the right one comes along…”
On the Island of Jersey, Detective Inspector [DI] David Graham has worked hard to buil his team and it’s beginning to pay off. Barnwell has twice been honored for gallantry. Roach has passed the Sargent’s exam and is focusing on forensics with Dr. Tomlinson. Graham is proud of his men, but he’s lonely and hopes to spend time with the local librarian Laura.
Life gets in the way however as a hurricane approaches, and then a missing scientist:Greg Somerville. Not the most well liked person, several suspects are considered from his girlfriend, the locals or the French fishermen they have a running feud with, or the animal rights activists overly concerned with his study. Who did it and better yet, why? Will David and Laura ever have an uninterrupted date?
I love everything that Alison Golden writes and this is no exception. My only concern is the time between “cases”, but I know they’ll be worth waiting for. Highly Recommended 5/5
[disclaimer: I received this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it]
DI Graham and his cohorts are faced with domestic disputes, international fishing squabbles, murder and other maritime misbehavior at and around the largest hurricane and related land/sea damage in recent history.
Ill intended folk work to use the natural disaster’s chaos to cover their sins, large and small.
Graham and colleagues deal with the challenges with their usual flair and elan.
Fun KU Brit cozy!
Greg Somerville and his girlfriend, Tamsin Porter, are scientists studying migration patterns of Holden Sharks. Lately, Greg and Tamsin have been arguing quite a bit. Following their latest dispute, Greg takes off on his own, but fails to return. The local fishermen are also upset. Besides Greg’s activities, they are also upset with French fishermen coming into their territory. The leader of the fishermen is Dev Smith, who seems to have quite a temper and is prone to inciting the local fishermen against the French.
When Greg’s body washes ashore following a hurricane, the question arises as to how he died. The coroner determines that Greg was murdered. With no sign of Greg’s boat, another of the local fishermen, Matt Crouch, goes looking for it. When Matt fails to return, Inspector Graham calls on the Coast Guard to search for him. After his boat is found with no sign of Matt aboard, Inspector Graham has to wonder if the two cases are connected.
Who killed Greg Somerville? Where is Greg’s boat? What happened to Matt Crouch? Can Inspector Graham and his team unravel the clues to solve the mysteries? Can Inspector Graham and his team prevent this from escalating into an international incident?
This is one of the best of the Inspector Graham mysteries, which will keep you guessing clear to the end. Alison Golden has a unique way of providing clues along with the red herrings to keep the reader’s interest clear to the end.
A lot is brewing in this new book by Alison Golden. A hurricane, a distrust of scientists that are tracking the migration of sharks, a feud between local fishermen and some French fishermen that may or may not be encroaching on the waters of the local fishermen, has Inspector David Graham more busy than he wants. What he does want is a quiet evening spent with his lady friend, Laura. However his romance takes a back seat to a murder and another disappearance. There is enough to keep the reader engrossed and the story moves along at a good pace. I received an ARC of The Case of the Pretty Lady for my honest review.
A hurricane hits the Island of Jersey and Inspector Graham’s life is turned upside down. In the aftermath of the storm, the body of a missing scientist is discovered. As the investigation progresses the clues and suspects seem to grow. The only thing the inspector knows for sure is the killer is still on the island.
This is the sixth installment in the series, but the book can be enjoyed as a stand-alone mystery. This is a well-written mystery with several twists and turns along the way to the big reveal. The characters have grown over the series and we get to see them away from the job a little more in this book. The epilogues wrap up the story very nicely allowing us to see what happened after the crime is solved.
I voluntarily agreed to read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.
Alison Golden manages to write excellent mysteries in three series, Rev Annabelle Dixon, Inspector Graham and Diana Hunter. This book is part of the Inspector Graham series, set on the beautiful island of Jersey and is a superb murder mystery featuring the small police team on the island.
One of the strengths of this series, and particularly this book, is the characters who are all really well described and more importantly, believable, this is clever writing as there is a really wide range of characters and they are all equally well written, as is their relationships with each other.
As with all of this author’s books, the plot is original and clever, but also has various sub-plots, a major storm and ghostly happenings in a B&B which keeps the attention riveted and makes it difficult to put down.
Although this book is part of a series it works perfectly well as a stand-alone read, although as with most series it gains a bit extra if it is read in sequence with the earlier books as the characters and their relationships develop throughout the series.
I received an advance copy of the book but have voluntarily written this honest review.
Another wonderful visit with Inspector Graham and the good folks of Gorey. This series just gets better and better. We get to know the characters more and the mysteries keep getting more involved in this book. It’s a great addition to the series and I hope that Detective Inspector Graham stays in Gorey for years to come.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
What a good read. A page turner full of twists and turns. DI Graham and his staff are such great characters, they’veall come a long way. . Love them all.
I was given a free ARC by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
Alison Golden has another great “Inspector David Graham Mystery” this is book 6 in this series and I have read them all and loved them all too. This might be my favorite so far though. I love the way Alison has slowly let us watch these characters in this series develope. I think you could read this book as a stand alone but when you read the whole series you really get to see each characters life unfold and how they interact with each other. I was given an advance copy and I am so grateful to be able to leave my honest review. If you have not read this series yet you really must give it a try.
Good story. Crimes galore. Several tragedies occur. Politics abound. The wonderful characters continue to mature. New characters have been added to the mix. At least one of whom is delightful. There were times when I had difficulty continuing. But perseverance paid off. And don’t skip the Epilogues. Well worth the time.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. This is my honest review.
Actually, The Case of the Pretty Lady has three separate mysteries that may, or may not, be related. I did not put the book down for more than a few minutes at a time until I reached the end. It was great to catch up with the villagers. Ms. Golden writes very personable characters, lots of details, plenty of suspects and read herrings. They are all woven into a delightful book that is sure to keep your reading.
