This romantic suspense will take your heart on a voyage to uncharted territory. The emotions range from desperation to contentment. However, this is a necessary journey your heart and head need to take. The ending may just surprise you, but in a great way and I strongly recommend you read this book.
Marnie Edwards’ mother is diagnosed with leukemia. When she goes to donate blood, she learns that she is not a match. Her father reluctantly tells her she was adopted 45 years ago when she was an infant.
State Trooper Scott Randall is investigating the possibility of a child trafficking ring in his county. One of Marnie’s students is a pregnant teen who’s being blackmailed into giving up her baby. “They” are threatening her two younger sisters with harm if she tells anyone, especially the police.
Ultimately Scott and Randal find themselves mutually attracted to each other, even as they work together to find who’s responsible for the threats.
The child trafficking might even go back decades as no one knows who Marnie’s birth mother is … and why she abandoned her baby.
This is a well-written story full of romance, suspense, and a few twists and turns along the way. Not all is smooth – sailing for Scott and Randall. They each have issues and tossing a troubled teenage girl , as well as her boyfriend, into the mix only creates more suspense and angst. The characters are fully developed, and they all relate to each other beautifully.

A wonderful second visit to Harper’s Glen. When Marnie Edwards learns that her mother has leukemia, she thinks this is as bad as it can get. When her mother needs a blood transfusion, it reveals that she is not a match. Marnie is forty-five years old and just finds out that she was adopted. Marnie volunteers at a youth center and State Trooper Scott Randall questions her about a possible missing teen. During the search a question arises about missing babies, babies that may have been sold in a long running trafficking ring. From Marnie’s quest to learn more about her adoption, a missing teen who is pregnant and in fear for her baby and a possible trafficking operation, there are many facets to this story. Ms. Deane expertly weaves the story in such a way that you are totally aware and involved in each new twist. As they work together, Marnie and Scott soon realize that they have feelings for each other. We also visit with Kate and Jack from the first story and although it is not necessary to read the first book, I would suggest that you do so as it was a great story too. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Marnie works at a youth center in upstate, relatively rural, New York State. She meets Scott Randall there. Scott is a state trooper who is in search of a teenager who is in distress and possibly in danger.
And then the roller coaster begins! Marnie’s mother falls seriously ill. Marnie discovers shocking news about herself and her family.
Meanwhile, there is a crime ring in the area that has been operating for years. It turns out that the crime ring is threatening Carly, the teenager Scott is looking for. There is so much going on in this book, and so many story lines that cross and re-cross. Meanwhile, Scott and Marnie find themselves in a growing relationship, while Carly’s family is having major stressors acting on their lives. Marnie is also experiencing major life changes. Ultimately, the story lines unravel for a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed this book and it’s the first one that I’ve read by the author. As an added feature for me, it takes place in a region that I knew quite well in my earlier years. My husband grew up in Horseheads, NY, which is mentioned several times in the book.
This is my voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of the book.
