When Green Beret Lieutenant James N. Rowe was captured in 1963 in Vietnam, his life became more than a matter of staying alive. In a Vietcong POW camp, Rowe endured beri-beri, dysentery, and tropical fungus diseases. He suffered grueling psychological and physical torment. He experienced the loneliness and frustration of watching his friends die. And he struggled every day to maintain faith in … faith in himself as a soldier and in his country as it appeared to be turning against him.
His survival is testimony to the disciplined human spirit.
His story is gripping.

A bit repetitive but a great story!
One of the best books I have ever read.
Very interesting and wrenching what this soldier went through for five years. It was amazing what the guards did to him to try to break him mentally and physically. Great story!
Really displayed the evils and savage tyranny of communism. With over 100 million dead due to the despotism of communism/socialism, I guess we should not be shocked. All our military should be educated by books like this. Read it and weep for the ignorance that has gripped this nation when it comes what these ism’s are about. Better dead than red!
The autobiographical story of a Vietnam era POW was heart wrenching. The spirit and bravery of the author as he survived the years as a prisoner was amazing. The writing is excellent.
A well written book about the authors unbelievable heroism as a prisoner of the Vietnam Cong for five years. Once you get involved in his story it is hard to put this book down.
This is everything I hoped for when I purchase the book. Viet Nam was my high school nightmare and being captured is completion of the nightmare. The author does a great job of writing and having lived through the era and serving in the Army (fortunately for me in Germany) in 69-71, I have always hungered for a first hand account. I am halfway …
This book was very well written and although the author was in captivity by the Vietcong, they didn’t torture him or threaten to murder him. It came as a surprise that they medicated him when needed . I expected him to be treated much worse by them. Although it was a difficult time for the author, I was inspired by his bravery and patience until …
Far too much detail, so it’s boring. I quit after the first chapter.
Very good firsr person account of a difficult and life changing series of events.
Gives and insight into a phase of the Viet Nam War that many didn’t know anything about
This is an excellent example of the caliber and quality of our nation’s finest soldiers.
Nick Rowe’s account of his POW experience is well written. His education and training enabled him to withstand the Communist captors efforts and enabled him to persevere though great personal trials and challenges that most of can’t even imagine. His …
