Bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot. Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a … Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author’s own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character’s art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.
With a forward by Markus Zusak, interviews with Sherman Alexie and Ellen Forney, and four-color interior art throughout, this edition is perfect for fans and collectors alike.

This book was something of a revelation. It was authentic, tragic, inspiring, complex, challenging, simple, and ultimately begs contemplation. A gem!

I’ve read this book more than once. It always makes me laugh…and sometimes cry!
This book is an excellent glimpse of what life growing up on a Reservation is like. Alexie brings you along to witness the laughter, the tears, the celebrations, the tragedies, and most of all the fierce love and pride of growing up in the extended Native American family that is a Reservation town; he let’s you in to see how hard it is to leave, …
This was another book I read in my MFA program and I actually started assigning it to my college English courses as one of the books they could read and review.
I was under the mistaken belief that it was a biography, but quickly realized it was a novel. However, when I read the material at the end from the author, I found the book is largely based on his real experiences. Seems like it’s part-time fiction and part-time non-fiction.
As I was explaining to my husband the other night, just because …
😀
Alexie’s YA novel, based on his own life, is a great reminder that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Should be required reading in all schools, but it’s great for adults as well.
I listened to this book on the Libby app, and I found it very interesting that the author read his own book for the audio version! I was a little annoyed that it was obvious it was taken from the CD version of the audio book because it kept saying “end of disc #” at certain parts, but other than that I enjoyed the reading of it.
The story itself …
Sherman Alexi is really unique voice. A huge talent.
Great storytelling with fun illustrations.
I loved Arnold, Jr. Reading this book was like having a clever younger brother or cousin tell you what was on his mind. There was lots of humor and the drawings were endearing and well done. He’s a strong character whose heart and head are in the right place. There was a lot of action and the story stayed interesting throughout. I heartily …
Gave me an insight into a world completely unknown nor understood by me. Sad commentary on our nation but presented in a comical, non-threatening way.
This is the story of a 14 year old boy named Arnold who lives on an Indian reservation in Spokane. He is a good student, so his school on the reservation is troubled, so his parents send him to the local school off the reservation. He doesn’t fit in there either, because he is the only kid who isn’t white at the school. Arnold had been born …
I was reading independently in class and everyone was quiet. I read one page and laughed/cried till I fell out of my chair. I was embarrassed but who cares. I luv dis buk!
I was visiting with my friend’s daughter yesterday and she said her 7th Grade class was reading this book. I remembered how much I loved it and dragged out my personalized signed advance reading copy from Sherman (2007) and re-read it today, so I could discuss it with her. It was as poignant, hilarious and emotionally raw as the first time! An …
