The son of a duke and an infamous mother, Alistair Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, fought his way to respectability. Now, the most eligible bachelor in London, marriage-shy Rexton will take only a wife with an impeccable reputation, good breeding, and a penchant for staying out of the gossip sheets. But when he strikes a deal to be seen “courting” a sweet young debutante whose notorious older sister … sister has blemished her chances for marriage, Rexton is unexpectedly drawn to the highly inappropriate, calamitous Tillie, Lady Landsdowne herself.
After a scandalous incident that sent shockwaves throughout society and disgraced her, Tillie refuses to cower in the face of the ton. 3.5-star read!
This book is not as strong as Lorraine Heath’s other books I’ve read. I feel both Rexton (Sterling Mabry and Frannie Darling’s eldest son) and Tillie (an American heiress and notorious divorcee) are a bit unremarkable. There was no major conflict or angst in the plot as I would normally see in her other books, and I did have a hard time keeping myself engaged throughout…
With her divorce scandal, Tillie was shunned by Society, and that had a major impact on her sister Gina’s chance to marry into the aristocracy. So their uncle came up with a scheme to employ the Marquess of Rexton to pretend showing interests in Gina, in exchange for having the precious Black Diamond as stud. While Tillie served as Gina’s chaperone and an observer to Gina’s potential suitors, she was drawn by Rexton and his carefree attitude in defying Society’s convention…
I believe Tillie is a strong woman, willing to face the grave consequences of her scandalous actions just to be free of her miserable marriage life, and I couldn’t blame her for building a wall and taking extra caution to protect her heart from being broken again. Overall, even with some swoony moments by Rexton, this book is not captivating enough for me as it bears many repetitions and the plot is not much exciting. I think this might be my least favorite book of the series!
Ms. Heath saved the best scandal for last – Rexton and Tillie are perfect foils for each other. Lovely!
Not Nearly as Exciting as Other Books by Lorraine Heath
The premise for this story was uncommon, a Marquess falling for a divorcee. However, although the scenes were somewhat different, the outcomes did little to progress the relationship between the H and h – unless you count the sex as progress. It remained pretty static until the very end of the story. Hence, the lack of excitement.
AN AFFAIR WITH A NOTORIOUS HEIRESS”
by Lorraine Heath 2017
Prime marriage material, Alistair Mabry, Marquess of Rexton, future Duke of Greystone was attending his sister’s ball when he was approached by Garrett Hamersley. Hammersley wanted Rexton to squire his niece around in order to help pique other gentlemen’s interest in her. Gina was a shy wallflower. To make it worth Rexton’s time, Hemmersley offered Black Diamond to stud. Rexton was horse crazy and accepted the agreement. What he hadn’t taken into consideration was Gina’s sister, Lady Mathilda Landsdowne. Upon meeting her when he went to pick up Gina for a drive, the sparks began to fly. She was the divorced Notorious Heiress. He could not get seriously involved with her except as his mistress which sounded very nice. For only a woman without scandal could be his wife.
Just a note here: A lot of sexual ‘thoughts’ throughout the book. A bit much but probably emphasized his ‘desire’ for Lady Landsdowne. Happy Reading! ReadingGenie
Quite forgettable. I skimmed through it. Pick one of Heath’s older titles for a better reading experience.
Loved it. Couldn’t wait to know what happened next.
I really liked this book because the characters were so engaging. Even though you knew where the story was headed the chemistry between the characters kept me interested. I recommend it.
I love Heath’s books. She writes entertaing characters with a lot of heart. Wonderful read!
I enjoyed this book immensely. I couldn’t put it down.
