Wow, what an incredible read! There’s a lot going on in this book and I, for one, loved every minute of it. Like Star Trek: TNG, there’s plenty of action scenes and a lot of characters to keep track of but the reader will be so engrossed in what’s happening, it won’t be a problem. The concept of Maestra is new to this series and added suspense to the plot. The romance between Nivi and Moose is a classic trope but one of my favorites: friends to lovers. But don’t fear science fiction fans, the romance is secondary to the main plot.
Why is this a five-star read? The action scenes are intricate in their detail yet captivating. While reading, I kept gripping my tablet to see what would happen next. The complex character arcs impressed me and the world building from previous books are spot-on. Continuity is a must in any series and Pauline Baird Jones nailed it. While this is a standalone, reading the whole series is recommended.
If you’re a big science fiction and/or science fiction romance fan, you’ve got to read this one! Highly recommend!

Our heroine doesn’t know it when she awakens, but the fate of multiple worlds rests on her shoulders. No pressure!
This is book eight of the series. While there are references to things past (and appearances by past characters), this story actually does just fine as a standalone. I may have missed some things, but that will just make it more fun in reruns.
This is a space opera series with elements of romance. The story is well written, easy to read and quite engaging. The world is well developed and has a lot of depth to it. I admit there is probably a lot I missed by not reading the previous books, but again, I got the parts important to this story. The characters are also nicely developed with intriguing backgrounds and personalities. Most importantly to me, they grow and change over the course of the story. I like a good space opera and this one fit the bill nicely. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
Highly recommended.

The author writes quite a story. She introduces us to our awkwardly brilliant heroine and our strong silent giant of a hero, sets the situation and lets the space opera take off, pulling the reader along in the turbulent action while clinging to the humanizing brightness of the romances interwoven through the space opera. Me, I was particularly taken by how the author dwelt on the possible consequences of humanizing our hero – I had not really considered what it would mean for someone to transition from being deprived of sensation to feeling physical sensation again and how that could affect the heart and the psyche. The author`s treatment of this was at once thought provoking and sweetly romantic – and I did not think that combination was possible.

I love this series!
Maestra Rising is the eighth in the series that can be read as a stand alone.
This multi-galaxy adventure series sees humans, and many varied races of free and enslaved sentient beings.
There are robots, once humans, artificial intelligences and scientists that bend space and time. Many of which do not have much morals and ethics, and then there is Nivi, the Maestra. Who is she and where does she come from?
The main characters are strong and independent individuals, good dynamics ad interaction between them.
The vivid and colourful cast of secondary characters make and enance the storyline.
Well written with complex action and an ending with a twist, the Author delivers suspense with an edge that will have readers eager for more.

Prepare for a string of conflicts expertly interwoven
Other than the fact that I was a bit lost having not read the previous books in this series and therefore was missing some relevant backstory, this book was an action-packed and conflict-driven dream from the get-go. Even without the backstory, I could piece my way through the various character relationships presented and the overarching conflicts. A truly enjoyable read.
This novel is the eighth full length book in a series, called Project Enterprise, and while I read the first book, The Key, twice (I liked it that much) as well as Girl Gone Nova (book 2), Kicking Ashe (book 5) and Found Girl (book 6), I did struggle a bit with this installment. Basically, this series is a blend of fantasy, space opera, and romance, pretty much in that order.
Each book in the series fleshes out a situation, usually a crisis of some sort, and focuses on a couple of characters who will ultimately have a some sort of happily ever after. In this installment, Nivi, a gifted scientist awakens from cryosleep, being told “you are needed.” Still weak from a long sleep, she is supported by a robot who wants to be called “Moose.” There’s a bit of humor in all of Jones’ work, and Maestra Rising is no different. Some of the characters’ nicknames owe a bit to the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. Anyway, clearly Moose, who was once a living being himself, has more than a passing interest in Nivi, and he welcomes the opportunity to leave his powerful and reliable robot body behind and become the consciousness of an unused cloned body. Maybe she’ll like him better that way?
Before long, Nivi is enmeshed in a struggle to find and free a ship of humans, as well as preparing for the biggest war most of the characters, good and evil, can imagine. Moose, although having a bit of difficulty transitioning from mechanical being to biological being, longs to be at her side, always, but there’s a lot of war planning and tasks to accomplish before that can happen.
Jones writes books that are entertaining without being graphic or vulgar, and that’s increasingly difficult to find. Fans of the series should really like this novel, because characters from previous novels are present in minor roles. The author makes a genuine effort to explain the complex relationships involved, but reading it as a stand-alone would be challenging. My problem with this book is that it has been literally several years since I read the previous books, and decades longer since I watched Rocky and Bullwinkle, so I had forgotten a lot of the context. While I do recommend Pauline Baird Jones as an author and the Project Enterprise series, readers should strongly consider starting at the beginning and working through the entire series before undertaking Maestra Rising.
