Do you ever feel sad as you finish your book, wishing that it would just continue on and on? This is exactly how I felt as this book came to a close. I felt impatient through the whole book for Mr. Knightley and Emma to finally come together, but I just hated to see their story end.
This was probably the best Emma adaptation that I have ever read. Definitely one of the best Austin adaptations! It fits so perfectly with modern times, yet still kept true to the heart of the original story. Well done!
I have the e-book through Amazon, and I also received an audiobook review copy of this book through audiobooks.com and really enjoyed how the narrator portrayed this book.
A sweet, clean and romantic retelling of a Jane Austin book.
It has such enjoyable characters.
The plot was hilarious and well written.
Rachel John has written a good story.
Adorable. It went right along with Emma and I adore retellings. This was such a good one. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
Story: 5 stars
I won this audiobook in a drawing, but even though it was free, I feel no obligation to the author to be anything but honest in my review.
I will admit that Emma is my least favorite of Jane Austen’s books (I know, shocking, right?). That said, I anticipated that I really wouldn’t like this book all that much. I’ve read a TON of P&P variations and nobody really is able to capture the wit, the astute observation of character, etc. that Jane Austen does. So, I definitely came into this with low expecations.
I found this book to be surprisingly delightful! It stayed very true to the original plot and yet kept it believably modern. The names are the same, and so there is a comfort for the reader in that. The plot is cleverly adjusted to remain authentic to the original, but perfectly gives the characters their motivation for acting the way they do. The best part of the whole thing is that we get to hear the characters’ thoughts.
Emma is much more well-meaning, although every bit as mistaken in her reading of other’s characters, as the original. And George Knightly is a joy! We get to hear his thoughts! The mutual attraction is more evident right from the start, but both are worried about ruining an amazing friendship and then having to live with the consequences forever since they are related through marriage.
Their banter is so well-written!! I know that those true to Jane Austen will cringe when I say that I like this version so much better than the original and in all honesty, I can’t say that of any other adaptation I’ve read of which I can say the same. For me, with the exception of Emma, the originals are, and will ever remain, the masterpieces.
Narration: 4.5 stars
Ms. Dulude does a great job of voice acting the banter between characters. She reads with the perfect speed, good cadence and great expression. I’d happily listen to her narration again!

A contemporary romantic comedy on a Jane Austen classic. Light easy reading with a happily ever after.
A happy go lucky friendship makes this story a wonderful read. It made me laugh and at places it made me sad. I think the time that George and Emma spent dealing with their nephew and niece was so full of humor and realism! I could see the bread with the centers pulled out like I have seen personally from my boy. But the love they were hiding from each other almost was lost because they both was afraid to say anything to the other. You can really say the author made the characters seem to come to life on each page, especially little Johnny and his antics.
It’s so hard to find great Emma retellings! Which means I was REALLY happy when I read Rachel John’s contemporary romance inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma. This is such a fun book, with lovely characters, and an Emma I can relate to. The chemistry between hero and heroine was perfect, too! Loved the whole thing and will read it again.
This was a fun story. The author had her own little spin to the story and stayed true to the spirit of the story and each character. I enjoyed the writing, the dialogue, and the characters. I was able to be fully immersed in the story and stay there.
I tend to either love or hate Austen retellings. I loved this one! Cute, well written. The characters were fun and believable. A great read!
