A sweet and fun historical read. Evie was a great nanny to her 3 charges. I really liked the emotional ending.
I don’t know how to really explain how much I enjoyed Evie and Flynn’s story. Oh my did this book touch on my every emotion. Shanna Hatfield just has a way of writing the most spectacular stories. Oh and the children in this story Puck , Peg and Miss Bee such special little characters. Everyone just snuggled deep in my heart. Once again Shanna Hatfield has made my Heart sing with Happiness.
Love blooming in Pendleton
My rating is 4.5 stars
When Flynn saw the beautiful nymph dancing in the moonlight, he knew he would never be the same. Dancing with her there, amid the flowers he so loved, his heart was captured.
Oh, how I loved this absent-minded landscaper with his love for poetry! His dedication and devotion to plants were endearing. It was so fun that he didn’t drive well due to constantly being distracted by plants growing on the side of the road.
Evie captured my heart as she poured herself out so completely for the children in her care. It was so cute how she gave them nicknames that everyone knew but their parents.
One of the things I especially enjoyed was the picnic they attended where the adults were singing popular songs of the period. I felt so much like I was transported to that time at the turn of the century, dressed in my finest enjoying the dapper gentlemen and lovely ladies surrounding me. Author Shanna Hatfield so thoroughly captures the feel of the period and includes very interesting tidbits of historical trivia via natural and enjoyable conversations.
Lovers of historical fiction will want to grab a copy of Evie!

I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
Flynn Elliott, a landscape architect, and his sister, Clarice, moved to Pendleton, Oregon a year ago after the death of their parents. While Flynn designs and oversees the projects, Clarice runs the business side of their firm. Consumed by his interest in the beauty of nature and bringing it to life, Flynn has no desire for social distractions.
With the death of her parents and only sibling, Evie Caswell became a nanny to the three children of a wealthy flour mill owner and his wife. Devoted to providing them with a loving childhood their parents deny them, she has given up on dreams of her own home and family.
Both seeking to escape a ball they were obligated to attend, Flynn finds Evie dancing alone in the garden. Evie soon learns Flynn is the new architect hired to transform her employer’s gardens. Despite their decisions, they soon find themselves seeking out ways to see each other.
Shanna Hatfield’s tenth book in the Pendleton Petticoats series was terrific. Not many books have you hooked at the first page, but this one did. I so enjoyed Flynn and Evie’s story as well as learning what was popular and present during this time period and area – from children’s entertainment to plants and trees and flowers to inventions.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
Love reading a historical romance. Evie is a nanny to three very young children and loves them dearly. She and Flynn meet one enchanting evening and can’t seem to keep their minds off of each other. We see past characters and learn more about their lives and the town. An emotional last couple of chapters and loved the ending.
I love the Pendleton Petticoats series and the continuation of the great characters.
Evie was a wonderful nanny, making learning and playtime so enjoyable, and putting her charges needs before her own. Flynn wasn’t just a landscape architect, but a true horticulturalist, working with plants to make them hardier, sweeter smelling, better tasting, and more. He was such a romantic with his flowers and poems. I received an education in plants. It was funny how he talked to them like they were people. Flynn was so focused on his work and found Evie to be an unwanted distraction and Evie didn’t want to abandon the Stewart children to their thoughtless self centered parents. But they can’t fight the love they feel for each other. A new gardener for the Stewarts may provide competition for Evie’s heart. Will Flynn tell her what she means to him before it’s too late?
Heartwarming story.
This is another heartwarming read in The Pendleton Petticoat series. Flynn and Evie are sweet, loveable characters that were meant to be together.
I really enjoyed this story. It is fun and emotional. Evie is alone in the world and has taken a job as a nanny. She will probably never get married and have a home of her own. The three children she takes care of are as dear to her as if they were her own. She takes better care of them than their parents. In fact, the children prefer her over their parents. One night at a ball, Evie is dancing in the garden when Flynn happens upon her. He is immediately smitten but knows it will never go anywhere because he has to concentrate on his work. But, he just can’t get Evie off of his mind. He tries to distance himself from her, but she and the children has wormed their way into his heart. What will he do? Evie is afraid to dream of a happily ever after with Flynn. What would he want with a nanny?
Evie is a dedicated to the children she is a nanny to. Flynn is dedicated to his horticulture. One magical night they meet and have an instant connection. But he is too busy to court a woman and Evie is spends most of her time with the children. But times spent together and then a near tragedy will have them admitting their love. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
DISCLAIMER: This is an ARC that I received from the author in exchange for an honest review:)
About this story: The story of Evie follows two characters who have planned out their futures based on their obligations to their work. Evie and Flynn show admirable traits such as dedication, kindness, honesty, and the eagerness to work, hard though it may be at times. Both characters illustrate a reluctance to enter into the union of marriage and the very idea of it is unimaginable given their current places in life; Evie with her involved work as a dedicated nanny which leaves little to no time to herself, and Flynn with his complex work as a botanist. Both characters undergo a series of alterations concerning future plans that they can only owe to the impact each has on the other.
So, this story was nicely written with a fresh plot, interesting conflict, and spot-on rising action. So many of Mrs. Hatfields stories include men whose work is acutely physically involved, but Flynn’s character brings a freshness to this storyline because of his unique work as a botanist and his nerdy exterior. Hatfield does a terrific job at contrasting Evie and Flynn as both characters appear so different–– besides the fact that they both formerly had no plans for love–– yet alter each other so abundantly.
Pacing in this story is consistent for the most part, but two chapters go by without any encounters between Flynn and Evie, which is not bad but did disappoint me as this is their story and I wanted to see development. I would not say there is any insta-love, but there is an instant connection between Flynn and Evie that I believe the author handles quite well. Flynn’s fascination is perfect as I believe his character desperately needed someone fascinating and captivating in order to open his eyes to the wonders of love. Evie takes her time with sorting out her feelings regarding Flynn, deciding if she can trust him, and does not throw herself at him when she admits to herself that she does in fact love him; both Flynn and Evie demonstrate patience which aids greatly in the pacing of the story. I do wish these two characters would have stopped being so hard headed sooner in that story but alas, there would be no story if Evie and Flynn weren’t stubborn;)
Mrs. Hatfield did a superb job at bringing together the stewart family toward the end of the story; the sickness that overtook the stewart household aided in bringing together not only Bee, Puck, and peg with their parents, acutely knocking down the barriers between them, but also aided in decimating the defenses that both Evie and Flynn had, essentially protecting their hearts against potential hurt. This rising action is wonderfully written and placed and helps draw this story to a close by making characters realize that life is precious and short and should not be spent solely on cultivating careers or anything else that takes away from family.
As for things I was disappointed by, I wished to read more about Evie–– where she came from, how she grew up, where she grew up, anything more about Evie would have been welcome. We get a paragraph of sorts about how her family died but not much more.
All in all, this book was very enjoyable and well written. I loved seeing characters from Shanna’s other books–– especially Lacy and Holden Hill!
This book is clean with five kisses between Evie and Flynn ( as well as two kisses between Clarice and Mitch). After their wedding, Flynn kisses Evie’s neck and hints at the very enjoyable activities that come with marriage.
*I spotted four typos within this book but nothing else caught my eye on this front*
I rated this book an overall of ⅘ stars for pacing, cleanliness, plot, and writing.
Once again, wonderful job Mrs. Hatfield!
The story was well written and the characters well done.
The hero was nerdy and swoon-worthy; the heroine was sweet and enchanting; the kids were adorable.
Just a fare warning to all. This is now my favorite story in the Pendleton Petticoat series. I love them all but Ms. Hatfield wrote a most beautiful, wonderful and romantic story with Evie, far above what I have read from her before. Oh, my what a story this is. Romance and fun and everything you would expect from Ms. Hatfield’s historical romance and more. Even something horrific which you won’t expect in this time frame.
The heroine Evie is a nanny for three adorable children in a wealthy family, and is almost a goddess to our hero Flynn Elliott. He does landscape architecture and is well known for his work back east and even in the White House and Washington D. C. circles as well.
They way they meet was the first indication that this was going to be my favorite Shanna Hatfield story of all time or at least in this series but I think of all time.
The scene that made me just become still with awe was at the annual ball of the at Dogwood Corners.
Flynn hates balls and doing anything beyond his business and cultivating beautiful plants that he speaks poems to from famous poets.
He is at the ball because his sister drags him there. He goes outside after some eating and socializing to get lost in the beautiful gardens in the night moon that casts the light and shadows on the grounds. He hears something and goes to investigate and comes upon a breathtaking scene he believes just might be in his imagination. He believes he is seeing a woodland sprite. The most beautiful creature he has ever seen. She is dancing alone in the moonlight and he thinks of Aphrodite. He is breathless at this vision so ethereal he couldn’t move or take is eyes from her.
Now if that isn’t romantic and make you also breathless, I don’t know what will, and this story just continues to get better from there.
This is an absolute must read for anyone and especially fans of Ms. Shanna Hatfield. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed at all.
I received and advance copy of this story by the author but I was not asked to review and as you can see from my review that is was certainly one, I couldn’t refrain from reviewing. I did not receive any compensation.
love the story, Evie is the nanny for three children, Flynn works to make gardens beautiful and loves to combine different flowers to make new ones. it was nice to see what everyone has been doing and how the children have grown. if you have not read any of the books it is ok this can be a stand alone love the way Flynn treated everyone I could not put the book down. I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest reveiw. if you like romance and children and animals you will want to read the story.
I absolutely enjoyed reading the book!
It’s a engaging story, that pulled at
all my heartstrings. It is a well-written book that has beautifully developed characters
& has some incredible & touching scenes.
You will fall in love Evie, Flynn & her adorable charges, Peg, Puck & Bee, from the very
first pages to the last.
I loved everything about this
Must Read Story!!!
Evie is a nanny who works almost all the time for her employers and has given up on a dream for a family of her own until she meets Flynn at a local ball. Flynn finds Evie captivating but feels the need to focus on his business and since he is fixing her employers landscape feels it wouldn’t be prudent to court Evie. What a conundrum they find themselves in with their thinking and it will take something big to make a change the course they are on. I really enjoyed this book and did not need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this story. I love the way the author approached this story and the way the author went between Flynn and Evie. I really got into the story and really wanted to know what happened next all the way through. This a clean read worth reading.
Evie is the last book in tbr Pendleton Petticoats series. In this book, you get two romances in one. Both Flynn and his sister Clarice, fall in love. Flynn is a landscaper and had taken Pendleton by storm. He’s in high demand and kept busy and feels that his life is his business. He’ll never marry because he’s married to his work.
Evie is a nanny to three active, growing children. She’s devoted to the children. Heaven knew she had to be because their parents were extremely distant. She knew she would never marry, the children needed her.
I read the series from book 1 straight through to this last book in the series. You can watch the town grow and change with the times as well as follow the life of those you’ve come to know as if they were friends. This is a wholesome, delightful series that I recommend to anyone!
A great historical story pulling you in from the start. This one about Evie and what she goes through for the children she is nanny for, and how she interacts with Flynn. Flynn and his sister Clarice moving to Pendleton to start their landscape business. A well written perfectly paced story in the series.
Evie was such a sweet, caring nanny! I loved her character so much. She was so loving and full of fun, just the opposite of her employers. Flynn is a very intelligent horticulturist who is so busy with his career that he knows he has no time for love. They meet at a dance and Flynn is absolutely captivated by Evie’s beauty and spirit. They both feel like they shouldn’t pursue what they are feeling for each other due to their jobs. Life keeps pushing them together until the unthinkable happens. The family Evie works for is struck with a deadly illness. Will Flynn stay away or risk his own life for those who he has come to love?
Honestly, this book was so beautiful! I loved seeing the way the characters developed and how the family transformed. I received an ARC of this book from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
