Whoa! What a wonderful surprising read! I honestly hadn’t read the blurb and grabbed this via KU cos I like the author and wow!
It’s stunning and the concept is mindboggling but so imaginative and awesome! Rhone and Kellan are beautiful characters in a wonderful story.
What to say? I usually don’t go for fantasy reads but this one had me roped in from the beginning. Kellan and Rhone are like any other couple. At first it takes some getting use to the pronouns but it didn’t take away from their awesome love story. It was great to see a relationship blooming between two people at a base level not looking at physical traits. It is a great love story.
This was the tale of Kellan, an ordinary man wishing to be more, who found the love that opened the door to a future he never imagined. The storyline kept me engrossed, and my feelings were all over the place. Just like Kellan, I actually reminded myself that my anger at certain characters wasn’t good for Mother Earth, which is a sign of how much into the story I really was! I liked Kellan and Rhône, and I enjoyed watching Kellan’s growth during their relationship. I loved Rhône’s hidden village and wanted to see it protected. As usual, the humans were the ones endangering something they didn’t understand. If there is ever a follow-up, I’ll be at the front of the line waiting for it. Very original and interesting.

The year is 2044 and in a world where humans and extra-sapiens coexist, Kellan, a human, has always dreamed of being involved in magic. Everything changes the day he follows a captivating creature behind a waterfall. Meeting Rhône is life altering for Kellan, because he’s introduced to the Popids. I love the world the author created: an independent, self sustaining, underground magical place. Unlike the outer world, full of hatred for everything different, the Popids live in harmony and inclusiveness. Kellan loves living among the peaceful people and his connection to Rhône becomes stronger every moment together. But there’s danger lurking, secrets are coming out and ,maybe,Kellan will have his wish of becoming a supernatural.
What Blooms Beneath is like a fairytale and I really recommend it.
What Blooms Beneath is a standalone romance set in a contemporary world with paranormal and fantasy elements. I really wanted to like this book because it had a really interesting premise and plot set in a fascinating world. Unfortunately, this book read more like a political manifesto instead of a romance. I completely agree with the political views that the author was extolling, but how the author presented these views did not work well with the prose and storytelling. There was too much “telling” within this story. Instead of developing the characters and plot and using their actions to demonstrate and show the different policies and views that the author was conveying, the author simply used long descriptions and internal monologues. It did not make for an entertaining or enthralling story. I think the author could revamp this book and do some more development with the characters and plot in order to have more action and less monologues. This would make the book more interesting. All in all, the book was not bad, but it was not really engaging or entertaining.
