A cheating almost-fiancé; Halloween in New England; a difficult decision; a family line of witches.
All these plot points make up Peggy Chambers’ addition to the DEERBOURNE INN novella series, WITCHES’ CLIFF.
Penny Winters returns to the town she was born in, Willow Springs, VT from Boston, to seek the advice of her long dead grandmother. A devote practitioner of Wicca and a generational witch, Penny needs to know if she should marry her cheating fiancé or kick him to the curb. And since it’s Halloween, Penny knows it’s the best time of the year to connect with her ancestors.
She finds more than she bargained for when she checks into the Deerbourne Inn, though.
The tiny town is rife with paranormal energy and Penny “senses” it from the start when she almost runs over an old woman on the road to the Inn. A woman who disappears as if she was never there.
Penny discovers a witch at the Inn, and one with a plan that doesn’t include the Boston beauty who’s caught the attention of the man she wants as her own, electrician and hottie, Liam. But Liam has other plans that include getting to know Penny.
Penny is enchanted with the tiny town of Willow Springs, but she’s on a mission and it’s not to find a new love but to figure out what to do with the one she already has. Fate ( and a strong great x’s 5 grandmother) have another idea for her, though.
When Halloween arrives and Penny makes her way to Witches’ Cliff to seek the answer to her question, she gets it – and a few unintentional “gifts” as well.
A short, satisfying story with an upbeat ending, WITCHES’ CLIFF is a grand addition to the DEERBOURNE INN series.
I was given a sneak peak at this book by the author- whom I thank profusely for the honor!
Penny’s returned to town after leaving with her mother after her birth. The stigma of being witches was too much, so they fled. She descends from a whole family of witches and lives in Salem, MA. On the heels of a marriage proposal she is uncertain about (he’s a bit slimy – meh, we are not rooting for this fella!), she comes to town to seek guidance of a different kind…from an ancestor. This requires climbing the Witches’ Cliff (where witches were tried and tossed off) on Halloween and summoning her great-many times over-grandmother. Oh, there’s also a handsome electrician who has eyes for her and another local witch she is skeptical about: is she friend or foe? HIGHLIGHTS: I enjoyed the paranormal elements, Penny’s down-to earth attitude and confidence, and the overall story line. Crisp, clear writing. My first book by Peggy Chambers. I’ll definitely read more! P.S. If you’re not reading the Deerbourne series, I highly recommend it. Each story is its own, so you can jump around. I’ve read them all so far.
After a marriage proposal she is unsure of, Penny returns to her place of birth in Willow Springs, Vermont. She is descended from a family of witches, one of which was killed on Witch’s Cliff. Penny’s mother fled with her from Willow Springs to Salem MA. Penny now seeks her tenth-great grandmother’s advice regarding the proposal. Yep she’s one of the witches thrown off Witch’s Cliff in 1692.
Staying at Deerbourne Inn, Penny encounters LIam a handsome electrician that keeps popping up in her life. Lian makes her question even more the sleaze that proposed to her. Another witch in the town has an agenda and sees Penny as a problem. Penny came to the town for a reason and she intends to follow through even though is warned to leave numerous times.
First off, I love anything Halloween. Ms. Chambers brings the story to life with lush descriptions and entertaining characters. I enjoyed this addition to the Deerbourne Inn series and highly recommend Witch’s Cliff!
If you haven’t read any of the Deerbourne Inn Series, I strongly suggest you check them out. I have read them all and enjoyed the diversity and entertainment of each book. They all take place in Willow Springs, Vermont at the quaint Deerbourne Inn, which has a charming history itself. From historical to romance, and mystery to paranormal, there is something for everyone in this series.
In this Deerbourne Inn book, practicing Wiccan Penny Winters goes to Willow Springs in order to conjure the spirit of her tenth-great grandmother, whom died in the 1692 witch trails. It’s Halloween, the perfect time for a witch to perform magic. There she meets Liam, a sexy electrician who always pops up when she least expects it.
This novella is pretty short and a little repetitive, but the writing is clear. Penny and Liam are great characters. The narrative is told from Penny’s POV only, but I would’ve liked some scenes from Liam’s perspective as well. There isn’t a solid HEA, but the possibility of one in the future does exist.
Ms Chambers described a beautiful, mystical setting, especially the cliff and the tunnel of trees. I loved seeing the town in full holiday swing. I’m interested in witch history and folklore, so I found those parts very interesting. Overall, I enjoyed the story.
