Book 1 in the Chronicles of Elantra fantasy series by New York Times bestselling author Michelle Sagara Seven years ago Kaylin fled the crime-riddled streets of Nightshade, knowing that something was after her. Children were being murdered—and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin.… to fight and she’s become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she’s made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth.
But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging. Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can’t trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers—powers that no other human has. Her task is simple—find the killer, stop the murders…and survive the attentions of those who claim to be her allies!

I have this habit of rereading this book every time a new one comes out in the series because I love how every piece of Kaylin’s story that Michelle Sagara circles back the the first book. The first time I read it I yelled at the book because it left me with SO MANY unanswered questions. Now I love it because each question this book answers causes …
This series is so unique and different! The continuing story is so unpredictable. The world is amazingly crafted and deep.
Michelle Sagara is one of my favorite authors. I look forward to reading each of her books. The characters in this series are now old friends.
I loved this book and plan to read the rest in the series
It is not often that I find a fantasy that is both intellectually challenging and suitable for a young adult audience. A fabulous read for fantasy fans, and a good basis for a complex and engaging series. Worth all 5 stars!
A fun read with an interesting world.
Michelle Sagara’s strong, engaging voice in CAST IN SHADOW kept my attention, but its the worldbuilding in this one has me so intrigued that I’ll be immediately hopping into book two. Excellent on audiobook, too!
