I liked this story. It showed more personality of the police, had some humor and was a good murder mystery. I think it’s fascinating for police to investigate cold cases and try to solve them. This was well written and enjoyable.
Cassandra (Lt. Kate Gazzara #2) my seventh read from author Blair Howard and the second in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series. Before reading Jasmine (Lt. Kate Gazzara #1), my sixth read from author Blair Howard and the first in the Lt. Kate Gazzara series I’d only read the author’s Civil War & Civil War/Western Series. Well-written and enjoyable detective fiction this book is at least as good. I was been given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reading & reviewing it. Renée Maxwell’s narration adds to the book’s enjoyment. I look forward to Saffron, the next book in this series. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
A story that mixes crime with difficult corporate relationships, jealousy, difficulty to abide by rules and chain of command, lack of credibility in the police and govenment in general, corruption. Nothing too far from life in big cities. It was a good surprise as the book is easy to read and with twists and turns that are believable. I´ll be reading other books from this series/author.
Blair Howard’s Cassandra is another excellent read, given to us by a master storyteller. Lt. Kate Gazzara is up to her ears with internal police department issues when she’s instructed to update the assistant police chief on the cases she’s working on, including a twenty-three-year-old murder of a young woman named Cassandra.
I enjoy how Blair blends his larger-than-life characters together with an excellent plot, which keeps readers guessing as to the perpetrator of the crime. This is well-written and moves at a fast pace. Highly recommended for those you enjoy crime stories.
The author has two interlinked series, the ‘Harry Starke’ books and the ‘Lt. Kate Gazzara’ series, this is the second book in that latter series.
The book is split roughly evenly between the investigation into a cold case murder of young woman 20 years ago, and Kate’s personal trials and tribulations with her sexist boss. Although it has to be said that she is very often her own worst enemy in the way that she interacts with the other police officers, except her faithful sidekick Lonny.
I really enjoyed the investigation into the murder, Kate uses her skill and intuition to uncover more than the original investigation did, and eventually the killer is revealed in a rather dramatic manner. Personally I find that there is too much of Kate’s personal angst and the discrimination against her and this is why I have given it 4 rather than 5 stars. Also in other books she has more interaction with Harry and I this lightened the tone, in this book she is trying to avoid calling on Harry for his help, so he is largely absent from this story.
This is a great read, with excellent characters, who display very human flaws and an exciting plot.
I received an advance copy of this book, but have voluntarily written this review.
Lieutenant Kate Gazarra is working cold case files. She has a new one over twenty years old. With no help from the original officer on the case, she starts a new investigation with nothing but what’s in the files. With her boss and the chief on her back and Internal Affairs looking into a police brutality case against her, this is a tough situation for Kate. At least her partner, Lonnie Guest has her back. This is a great book with well written characters. I enjoyed reading it and trying to guess who murdered the victim. I was wrong and the real culprit supposed me. I definitely didn’t want to put it down.
What a wonderful and amazing story of a young girl brutally murdered. The case has gone cold and moved to the cold case files 20+ years ago. Now Kate Gazzara finds the file on her desk with a stack of other cold cases. Kate is not that well liked. Some say she doesn’t have what it takes to be a good cop. But she grabs the file and starts her investigation. Can she find the killer after 23 years? Grab a copy and find out how she does it (or doesn’t). !!
I love Lt. Kate Gazzara. She is one woman that isn’t a shrinking violet when it comes to her superiors or anyone else. When she is given a 23-year-old cold case, she doesn’t want it. But Henry Finkle, Asst. Chief of Police gives it to her, I think to prove to Gazzara she can’t solve it. But there are those that really don’t want it solved, to begin with. This causes more migraines and problems for Lt. Gazzara than ever before. Will she be able to solve this cold case? Who wants it left alone? Will Finkle ever get what’s coming to him? You will have to read the book to find out what happens. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book. Which I loved and have read everyone of them!
Another fun Lt. Kate Gazzara book.
In this story, Kate is working a cold case dealing with a 23 year old murder of a 19 year female victim.
A varied cast of males surround the girl. Her mom’s creepy then boyfriend, the victim’s recently become ex boyfriend, a rich daddy’s boy with a serious mean streak, his rich boy buddies, and other buddies, and a few outsiders – folks who may have suffered at the hands of the band of rich boys like Cassandra.
full of nasty twists and turns, intimidation on many sides, and a bad IA investigation of Gazzara.
a butt kicking KU read!
Lt. Kate Gazzara is back in another police thriller along with partner Lonnie Guest. Kate is working on cold cases, and the one she has just found is a doozy. A young woman was murdered 23 years ago and the case has never been solved. Cassandra Smart was a beautiful young woman just starting her adult life and she’d be stabbed to death and no one had ever been arrested. Kate and Lonnie are in the process of re-working the case, while in the background, Kate is threatened by a “police brutality” rap. As Kate and Lonnie investigate, Kate is accused of stepping on toes she shouldn’t be stepping on, especially with Internal Affairs watching her every move. As with the previous Kate Gazzara novels, this one will keep you guessing. Can Kate and Lonnie find the killer after 23 years? Will Kate be kicked off the force for police brutality? And where is Harry Starke in all this? You’ll have to read the book to get the answers…. As an ARC reader for Blair Howard, I was given an advanced copy of this book for a fair and honest review.
In this book we get to see more of Kate’s methods when she gets tasked with working a cold case of a girl who was killed over 20 years ago. We also see more of the dynamics of her dealing with her boss, the creep Henry Finkle, and also Chief Johnston. There were some twists and turns in this before the killer is revealed. Another book worthy of the series.
Another great Kate Gazzara story. She acquires a cold case that is 23 years old. She is also under IA review and must follow things by the book. It is a great police procedural story. The characters are well developed and believable.
I truly enjoy the “Kate Gazzara” novels. It’s rare that I find a spinoff to be as good as the original books but in this case, Blair Howard does it. The cold case murder of a young girl falls to Kate while awaiting the decision of Internal Affairs due to a brutality charge lodged against her. Kate’s tenacity is a match for Harry Starkes’. A really good book with a tough, take-no-prisoners female cop whose as good as any man out there. Don’t miss this one.
Another great story from this author. I enjoyed reading about Kate the main character and how she solves this case despite all the obstacles in her way. The plot was wonderful. There is much excitement, twist and turns too! I will be reading more of this series and enjoying it immensely. It could be a tv series for sure!
